Most brewers spend a lot of time and effort keeping lactobacillus out of their breweries; it was the first thing we brought in (it still has to stay in the corner though). We blend together two different beers to make Troublesome. The first is a somewhat uninteresting wheat beer and the second is an overly acidic & funky beer fermented solely with lactobacillus. We blend the two beers together with coriander and salt at the tail end of fermentation to create a mild, lemony tartness and a fuller sensation of mouthfeel. And yes, it's hard to make.

12 oz bottle. Pours clear straw golden with no head. Wheaty aroma, coriander. The taste is light cracker malt with a touch of tartness, coriander and banana. Semi dry wheat bread finish. Not getting much salt, maybe a touch. Thin to medium, crisp mouthfeel. Overall light refreshing wheat beer with mild hef flavors.

L - Transparent pee-colored yellow. No head. Ok carbonation.

S - Bready, coriander, slight banana, little bit of salt, odd sourness, pilsner malt

T - Wheat, bready notes, not sour in a good way as bacteria not making this tart and neither is the salt

F - Light, not all that refreshing thanks to odd sour character

O - Not repulsive, but there are so many better Goses out there.

Drank last night out of a snifter glass from the 12 oz bottle. Pours a lovely straw color with good haze all around, decent head that eventually fades. Pretty normal aroma, some sweet malts and a bit of sea water from the salt, a touch of belgian spice. Pretty good flavor, but it errs on the side of the spices rather than the salty tartness that is typical of the style. Starts sweet, spice and coriander in the middle, finishes a hair tart with barely any discernible saltiness. Feels super light and easy to drink, smooth. Overall a tasty beer, just missing the mark for a true Gose.

Poured from a 12oz bottle into a US tumbler pint glass.

A: The beer is a light gold color with a thin white head that fades quickly and leaves a thin lace on the glass.

S: The aroma contains sour lemon, wheat, light caramelized malts and a touch of spice.

T: The taste starts out bready with flavors of wheat and a thin malt character. Then some tart lemony citrus flavor comes in along with a hint of coriander spice. The hops presence is very mild as expected and brings some balance. The after-taste is slightly bready and slightly tart.

M: Crisp and a little smooth, light-to-medium body, medium carbonation, finish is clean.

O: A little tasty, goes down easily, not too filling, very mild kick, good representation of style but seems more like a Witbier, it’s a decent beer to drink for a while if you’re in the mood for they style.

A - hazy and pale yellow with a thinner white head
S - mild nose with some earthy hops, wheat, and coriander
T - tart, sweet, and slightly sour with lemon, coriander, wheat, earthy hops, faint salt, and the oats actually come through as well
M - lighter body, finishes semi-tart, and puckeringly very dry
O - very refreshing with some good flavors. I may try this again. I feel like I should have enjoyed it more than I did.

A-pours a transparent straw color with a white head that fades rather quickly
S-wheat, a bit of funk, lemon
T-lemon, spiciness from the coriander, with wheat flavor following and lemon lingering in the bitterness
M-light bodied and crisp, very refreshing
O-really drinkable and refreshing beer

Pours an extremely murky, lemony-straw color with a thin skim of white foam that rapidly devolves into and island of frogspawn. Aroma is mildly tangy, with coriander and a kick of barnyard.

The taste is much more mild and wheaty than the aroma would suggest. Tartness is almost nonexistent until the finish. Coriander dresses the wheat backbone, while the yeast lends some Belgian character. Light body and fine carbonation yield a loose mouthfeel that only barely holds it together.

This is a curious beer indeed. It comes across as something of a hybrid between witbier and saison, which isn’t a bad thing--it’s just not what I expected. It would probably be fantastic on a hot summer day, though I do wish the mouthfeel was a little more substantive.

Fantastic looking beer with brilliant golden hue & a perfect amount of head. But it ends there, unfortunately. Sea salt & summer wheat malt on the nose but it is light & faint. Taste definitely has the coriander spice, but the wheat malt was very bland and rote. There is a little bit of the salty tang of the Gose style but it soft and doesnt blend well with the heavy spice & stale malt. Not bad, but with a bevy of Goses out there these days it isnt one to track down

Brilliant gold with a touch of haze. I left a lot of yeast at the bottom if the bottle so yours may be more hazy given more jostling. A finger of white head dissipated to a few dots quickly. Medium low carbonation. Smells yeasty and mineral and earthy with an undertone of sweetness reminiscent of honey. Taste is a lot lighter and crisp than the nose gives way to. It starts off sweet and malty but quickly transitions to light and buttery and oaky like a chardonnay or a pinot gris. Tanginess continues with a semi sweet Meyer lemon and a cantaloupe orange note. Finishes slightly dry and salty and tingly from the hidden carbonation. A little to dry if you ask me. The dryness doesn't match the fruity flavor profile. Overall still rather good. Nice, light, refreshing and yet still complex. I wish there were more well developed lighter beers out there like this.

Poured from 12 oz. bottle into pint glass.

The beer was slightly hazy, but a pleasant golden/brassy color. A short-lived foamy head that fell to a thin layer quickly. Constant stream of little bubbles kept the foam layer fed. As the beer warmed a few degrees it became crystal clear.

Aroma - it seemed a bit bland and non-descript to me. A little bit of lemon, a little bready, and a hint of peppery spice. Not much else - weakest point for me.

Taste - the tartness took me by surprise - noticed it immediately,but it is not strongly acidic. Just a bit tart. Then a breadiness and lemon, a bit of sweetness, followed by peppery spice notes, mild coriander. I did get the salty and sweet. Pleasant balance between the salt and sweet. The salt - to me it lingered and emerged more after the sip.

Mouthfeel - the carbonation seemed pretty lively on the tongue. There's almost a chalky feel that I find hard to describe - it's not "thick", maybe a mineral feel from the salt. Overall medium bodied and dry finish. Actually quite drying after the fact, but oddly thirst quenching during consumption. The salt and spice notes did linger. I don't know how much salt is supposed to be in a Gose...seemed like this one had plenty. Don't consume a lot of salt, so possibly I notice it more.

Overall, I like the flavors and how this beer drinks. The flavors are nicely "stacked" one on top of the other. I don't know why the aroma seemed so light to my nose. ^The level of acidity is pleasant and is counterpointed by the sweetness. The lemon notes and spice character play well. Other than the clarity, the flavor so are suitable to the style.

Poured from a 12 Oz bottle with a great label. (am I allowed to figure the label into my rating for appearance? )

A: Fantastic golden hue nice fluffy head that dissipates pretty quickly and leaves decent lacing. And the label has a mouse in a raccoon suit
s: Corriander, a little sour and bananas
T: a nice combination of slight sour spices malts but where is the salt?
MF: Crisp and clean
O: First sniff was great and I originally a little disappointed with the taste. As it warmed it improved and I was quite impressed. It is a Gose and I an still looking for some salt though. Oh yeah and a great label.

Pours a hazy golden color with a soapy white head that leaves little bits of lacing.

Smells of wheat, coriander, and earthy notes.

Tastes of the sharp wheat notes layered with some salt and spice. Wheat notes lead off. This gives way to some fruity lemon and berry notes. Tart notes come through in the middle before a bit of bready malt. Coriander spice, salt, and earthy hops come towards the end. Finishes fairly dry with a salty linger.

Mouthfeel is medium-light with a crisp amount of carbonation.

Overall, this is a tasty, well-balanced Gose.

Poured from a 12oz bottle into a Mikasa weizen glass.
LOOK: Pours with a half finger's worth of white foam that shrinks to a quarter's worth within 30 seconds. Pale straw yellow in color with a subtle cloudiness. Bubbles are in abundance with moderate lacing.
SMELL: Has mild aromas of wheat malts, coriander, and sweetness from pilsner malts that combine with subtle aromas of salt, spicy hops, and sour and earthy yeast.
TASTE: Initial taste is of mild salt (I'm so glad the salt is more perceivable in tatse than smell), coriander, and wheat malt flavors. Mild sweet flavors from pilsner malts enter immediately after along with subtle spicy hop and earthy yeast (no sour yeast can be tasted, that's disappointing) as all previous flavors persist in magnitude except for coriander, which fades from mild to subtle.
FEEL: Light-bodied, subtly carbonated, and very crisp. The coriander along with the spicy hops and salt agitate the tongue in a tickling manner. It's quite pleasant.
NOTE: This was a really good beer, but not a good gose. The flavors simply weren't strong enough.

This one is okay. I don't pick up much of the coriander and salt. It tastes and feels more like a wit than a gose. It is pretty easy drinking, a lot of carbonation. Thin body with very little after taste.

Nothing I would write home about. I'm don't think I'll be drinking this one again.

Lemony, Salty, Refreshing

A twist on the Gose style as it’s a blend of two beers; a wheat beer and funkified, acidic beer with coriander and salt added during fermentation. The result? A pale, slightly hazy, yellow, thin laced beer with acidic suggestions in the nose, and funk and wheat in the background. Fizzy, prickly carbonation with a firm mouthfeel, a bit breadiness, touch of sweetness, tart, lemony bite, and lingering coriander and salt. A very thirst inducing and quenching experience, without the over-the-top acidic burn found in too many sours.

I want my Gose to be subtle, but I don't really taste the salt or the tartness from the lacto at all. This feels like a pretty solid wit, but definitely not a Gose.

Honestly if you gave me this in a glass and didn't tell me what it was, I would think it's just a wheat beer. Not sour, not tart, not salty.
It's a totally decent beer, but if you're looking for an exciting Gose, keep moving.

If I could rate a beer based on look, smell, and mouthfeel this one would do ok. Unfortunately for this beer, i base my ratings on taste. This is an absolute turd of a Gose. At $10 a 4 pack too - to say I am unimpressed is an understatement. Barely any salt, some coriander, zero sour profile. Terrible Gose.

The smell is there, murky straw color, good carbonation too.

Tasty, light-bodied beer that gets more complex as it warms, though it was hard to hold off sucking it down. It's all yeast and coriander. Crisp in feel but gets creamy and bready as it warms. Reviews here are pretty meh but I'm going back to this beer when I'm looking for a tasty, low ABV beer.

This beer is troublesome in that it is neither sour nor salty. Had this been classified as a wit beer, it would probably get better scores but this has to be the worst gose I have ever had. It has nice carbonation, I will give it that. But only that.

12 oz bottle into a teku.

Appearance: Pours a cloudy straw color. The head is a finger high and white in shade. Retention - while not great - is surprisingly long for this kind of beer, and its texture is creamier than normal. Only a little bit of lacing sticks to the glass, though. (3.25)

Smell: Very lactic. There's a strong crabapple bite that invades the nostrils, as well as a touch of coriander. It seems to miss that salty note that other goses have, though. But having said that, this also seems more easy going than the most. We'll see how it tastes... (3.25)

Taste: I get a surprising amount of the "somewhat uninteresting wheat beer" at first. To me, coriander is the dominant note, with only traces of lacto and salt rounding things out. More of the latter qualities appear as more is drunk. The whole thing is restrained, subtle, and balanced - it's not my favorite gose, but I still dig it a whole bunch. (3.5)

Mouthfeel: Very full-bodied for the style. Despite the fullness and the relative sweetness, it remains refreshing and easy to drink. Carbonation is oddly restrained, but it works. (3.5)

Overall: I honestly prefer the very sour yet salty version of the style (think along the lines of Union's Old Pro), but I can certainly appreciate Off Color going for a more 'traditional' and restrained gose. This seems like a beer that will reveal more layers the more I drink it, and that's always a good thing. Naturally, I'll have to buy more of this to find out. (3.5)

I had a draft at Lucky's wicker park. Super pale and transparent. High head which quickly dissipated. Smells like it will taste quite bitter, virtually no aromatic hops, but a bit of spice (probably coriander ). Tastes a bit sour. Would not have again.

BA says this is a Gose which is by definition unfiltered, but this beer is very much filtered. I'm all for style-busting beers, so I'm just sayin' is all.

Quite a bright flavor, a lot like a crystalweiss, but with an added flavor. The label says coriander and lactobacillus, but I can't say for sure what the flavor is like, I just can't figure it out, and that is not a good thing.

Drinkable? Yes. Great? No. Would I purchase again? Probably not.

Great Gose, first one and best one so far. It's has no acidity, light bready/wheat grain character. Slight hints of coriander and sea salt. Yummy in my tummy. It has a light body, and a dissipating finish. For sure to grab more!

Appearance: Medium clarity yellow, thin to not head/lacing.

Aroma: bready with a hint of coriander and lactic.

Flavor: Virtually no acidity, light bready/wheat grain character. Slight hints of coriander and sea salt.

Mouthfeel: Light bodied, velvety texture. Dissipating finish.

Overall: Fairly true to style, but there's a reason the original style is virtually dead and modern American intense versions are flourishing.
