Okay, I am parked. Now where am I going? Unassuming store front on the strip south of Atlantic catty from some muffin place people are talkin’ about. Muni fed (heart) a stone’s throw down for 2 hours and I’ve got a shady suspect to watch my car for me unsolicited, whether I want it or not. Look back over my shoulder once or thrice for good measure, and in...

To the left side, a long ‘C’ish shaped dark wood topped bar with a lip, vertical plank wood base, and a framed foot space; seating for 20+ on hightop chairs (I spy Ben down at the end of the bar; I will join him). Barback is dark wood counter space; glassware of all sorts shelved below, on a wall of brick discovered beneath previous incarnations and theirs before with framing inbedded. Tiered booze on center, and some specialty stuff shelved to the left and above on a looong shelf plank. Large ornately framed horizontal mirror angled on center; small horizontal blackboards to both sides on the beam listing tap selections, wine boards on the far end, and vintage beer cans displayed, too. Décor holds beer trays, a mannequin head, old beer adage, a b/w frat boy kegger pic, a cool stage 2 mitosis mirror piece, and a single flat mounted at the end of the bar.

Opposite wall is beige with a few vintage beer tin pieces, and the area built in to the rear done in a deep red. Wide wood slat floorings and a pressed tin ceiling done black with spinnys spinnin’ in a row down center, & drop single filament bulb lampings. Large front windows around the front door vestibule with panel windows above. And it’s that front wall of windows that is currently blinding me off the glare of the 7:20PM Crown Heights sunset. I suggested breaking that one window there that’s giving off the glare of pain, but I’m drinking just now.

4 booths adjacent to the bar with thimble lamps affixed above and then some shared seating benched and more around shorty small tables. A bar counter like spur up front in one window, and 5 small square tables in the other on bench play.

And there is an unexpected cool backyard space, true. Brick & wood enclosed 3 sides around. The trees that grow in Brooklyn amidst 8 picnic tables horizontally and vertically, and 5 small stainless steel tables on the slight step up porch area raised to the rear. We moved back there from the bar once Ken showed up, but where oh where is the Bethy?

10 tap stainless steel barbell towers at opposite ends along the bar, 20 in all; a mix of New York State (Kelso Nut Brown Lager, Sixpoint Bengali Tiger, Captain Lawrence Imperial IPA, Ommegang Witte, ACBC Easy Blonde Ale, Saranac Pale Ale), regional (Troegs Nugget Nectar, Penn Kaiser Pils, Stoudts Karnival Kolsch, Atlantic Mount Desert Island Ginger, Smuttynose Robust Porter), American elsewhere (Oskar Blues Mama’s Little Yella Pils, Dark Horse Reserve Special Black Ale, Ballast Point Homework Series #1 Hoppy Red Ale, Sierra Nevada Summer Ale), import (La Chouffe, Palm, Guinness, Innis & Gunn Rum Cask Oak Aged Beer), and a single cider from an angry place (Angry Orchard Cider).

Reasonably priced pints and happy hours shave $2 off everything. They do a single pitcher (Saranac 60oz) for $16 if that’s your need. I started with the Penn Kaiser Pils and then hit a pair of Oskar Blues Mama’s Little Yella Pils, which was real damn good. Heady what? shhhh.

Mattender knows his game, and plays elsewhere I’ve been; yep, yep, & yep. Good tunes, caught a nice smattering of Radiohead. And Ben is insisting that I note the Bazini nut display (so noted); better than your average bar snacks. Nice crowd including a crazy Jimmy doppelganger. Chill house, excellent for a Catfish pregaming.

In New York for a business trip, and my hotel is here in Brooklyn. I found the Nostrand Avenue Pub just around the corner, and I'm glad I stopped in.

There's a classic bar vibe, with old Blatz and Schlitz serving trays on the wall, and a campy Saranac blow-up bear on the bar. It's hard to escape the hipster vibe, but with all the Velvet Underground playing, I was in a forgiving mood.

There are 20 or so taps, split between crafts and Belgians. There is a nice breadth of variety, with a generally high quality. The guy at the bar seemed to know what he was talking about, vis-a-vis beer, and he recommended a saison that I really enjoyed. Hard to argue with that.

Next time I'm in the neighborhood, I'll definitely stop by for another brewski.
