While out in Fort Collins visiting my future sister in law, we hit Coopersmith's downtown since New Belgium was closed for the weekend.

We put in our names for the 45 minute wait and went across the patio to the billiards room where we had a pint or two while we were waiting for our light-up buzzer thingy to go off. The atmosphere in the pool room is like a game room at a ski lodge. A nice big pine bar is over to the right, with darts, pool, and a few tables down a step or two to the left.

When our buzzer thing went off, we were seated in a big booth by the windows that look out onto the bustling sidewalk. The food is outstanding, and very reasonably priced for what you get. The beer is also quite reasonable, and is available in tasting "bullets" that are maybe five ounces, in addition to wussy 10 oz, or real 16 oz pint glasses. The best part is that you can order a sampler with 4 or 6 of those bullets full of any combination of their brews (excluding the cask conditioned special edition stuff).

The service was great, and the place was well-lit and spacious despite the huge Saturday night crowd. They brew a really nice variety of ales and lagers, and their chili beer is the only chili brew that I've ever had that isn't nasty. I hate hot stuff, and even though I found that brew a bit warm for my tastes, I actually really liked it!

I would go back here in a heartbeat. The food is outstanding (I had the guacamole turkey burger, and my fiance had the calzone....which I gladly finished for her), the brew is reasonably priced, and the atmosphere is vibrant without being loud or crazy. A definite must for any beer advocate visiting Fort Collins.

I would say that this is one of the nicest stops I've made, if for nothing else, for the atmosphere. I wound up hanging out with several of the employees for hours, each of them knowledgeable on beer, pleasant to be around, and just generally good people. Colorado has been damn good to me, and I plan to come back to everywhere, CO as much as possible.

Beers were great, enjoyed their chili beer (really getting into this style!) and enjoyed everything I had there (samplers, glasses, tastes, everything). Watermelon beer! Yeah!

Viva Colorado!

Not a bad place to go if you're making a brewery tour through Ft. Collins. Wouldn't include it in my top 3, but if you've got the time or are looking for some decent grub (Lamb Burger...) in between libations, definitely give it a try. I have had both good and overall disappointing experiences at CooperSmiths. If you go, SIT ON THE RESTAURANT SIDE! Had my parents up to visit a few months back and my dad and I wanted to shoot some pool on the bar side, but they just didn't have their lines cleaned properly and the beer was BAD (flat and a little putrid). Have had the sampler tray on the restaurant side and enjoyed all they had to offer, though it was by no means world-class. Seems a little watered down. Might be carbed at the tap?

Fort Collins has a little bit more brewpub competition than it used two, between two CB and Potts, Fort Collins Brewery's Gravity Ten Twenty, and the fairly recently opened Black Bottle Brewery. Coopersmith's, once almost completely unchallenged there, now has more options to deal with. Even so, it stacks up with the best of them.

Whatever you may be looking for, Coopersmith's has something that just might satisfy you. Looking for a typical restaurant experience with good food and in house beer? Go to the ever-popular pubside, with its sit down booths and tables, attractive bar, and lovely patio. Looking for something that reminds you more of the town's area bars? That's the poolside, with its more dimly-lit bar, framed by the brewing kegs behind them, and large number of pool tables in various rooms. If you're hungry over there, you can order meals and use its own seating in a slightly more casual setting. The place is popular on both sides and for good reason.

The beer selection is extensive and there are constantly changing seasonals and limited releases. It's all very good. Yes, there's better beer in town. There's better food in town. But both are still very good here, and the overall combination of high quality food and beer and a fantastic atmosphere makes for one of the best experiences in town.
