Our Belgian dubbel, the Deuce, is a 6.5% Trappist-style ale made with our house-made candi syrup. Dark in colour, with a light fruitiness and raisin-like flavours from the candi syrup, this is the next step up from Golden Boy in strength and colour.

Pleasantly surprised by this one. I find dubbels really vary. The best are excellent, but most are pretty unimpressive. This certainly isn't among the best, but it is a good one, and better than most. Chewy with lots of fig, date and plum. Slightly dry.

500 mL bottle picked up at the brewery; served slightly chilled.
Pours a murky reddish-copper colour; highly effervescent, and topped off with nearly an inch of creamy, off-white coloured head. Excellent retention - a smooth, dense cap remains in place for nearly ten minutes, with a generous collar and continuous ring of lace. I'd have to describe the nose as fruit-forward, as the most prominent facets seem to be notes of plum, raisin and figgy dark fruits, with hints of demerara sugar, pears, fruitcake and light clove spice.
This is an approachable dubbel, but not a particularly engaging one. Most of the flavours here are malty and saccharine - somewhat bready or muffin-like at first, but quickly progressing to a more sugary, fruity blend. Plums, dates and grape/raisin all come to mind, along with orchard fruit notes including pear, red apple and apricot. There is some mildly yeasty clove spice toward the finish; a little subdued, but the beer is more drinkable for it. On the thicker side of medium-bodied, with moderate carbonation levels that result in a somewhat soft, creamy feel on the palate. It may not be the most memorable dubbel I've ever had, but I sure can't say it isn't a pleasure to drink.
Final Grade: 3.95, a very solid B+. The Deuce gets two thumbs up from me - it's a well-made example of the style that I would certainly pick up again, and would encourage others to do likewise. It lacks the complex flavour profile and lively mouthfeel that most premier imported dubbels possess, but I can't rightfully penalize this beer for having a lot of stiff competition. It's better than their Golden Boy, in my opinion - which is saying a lot, because I generally prefer Belgian pales like that over dubbels like this.
