Picked this up in Roanoke over the weekend,good to see a new brewery in an area where you wouldn't think one would be.Poured into a nonic a deep bronze color with a tight formed half finger white head atop that settled nicely.Aromas have a hopped up red element to them with a big caramel malt base along with a hint of brown sugar then a big shot of citric hops to carry over into the finish.The flavors are spot on...for a hoppy big red wich I love.Caramel and toffee malt flavors with citric and resiny hops hitting hard,the alcohol gives off mild sugary-like sweetness.The can does say IPA but I think the Red Clay part in the name says something,a very good hoppy IPA/amber here.

Pours a clear amber with a tinge of red. Nice head with terrific lacing that hangs on for dear life. Aroma is nice and hoppy with a touch of sweet feel. Taste is good n bitter with hops and a nice back of maltiness in the background. Overall, feels ok going down but I feel that this beer lacks a little balance that would make it more complex and a better overall IPA.

A: Pours a relatively clear medium copper in color with moderate amounts of active visible carbonation rising from the bottom of the glass rather quickly and a faint amount of amber highlights. The beer has a two finger tall foamy light beige head that slowly reduces to a thick film covering the majority of the surface of the beer with a thick ring at the edges of the glass. Significant amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Moderate to strong aromas of caramel malts with some brown sugar sweetness and moderate aromas of citrus/grapefruit pith + pine hops.

T: Upfront there are moderate to strong flavors of caramel malts with light to moderate amounts of caramel, toffee, and brown sugar sweetness. That is followed by moderate to strong flavors of citrus/grapefruit pith and pine/resin hops which impart a moderate amount of lingering bitterness.

M: Medium bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation. Light amounts of dryness in the finish.

O: Maybe more of a hoppy amber/red ale than a traditional IPA but this one is pretty good - nice combination of hop flavors that are well balanced by the sweetness of the malts. I would get this one again.

My recent forays to NorVA and WASDC have enabled me to stop in at Total Wine & More stores in those areas, which is where this CAN came from in furtherance of The CANQuest ™.

From the CAN: "Sink a Few!"; "Virginia Brewed"; "Our Story [-] Smith Mountain Lake, Virginia is known as the 'jewel' of the Blue Ridge Mountains. This 40 mile long beautiful lake with 500 miles of pristine shoreline was originally dammed up and flooded in 1963 to generate electricity. Nearly 300 feet down lies roads, bridges, churches, and ghost-like imagery of a turbulent history between land and business owners and the authority that flooded their sacred ground. A once incorporated town now serves as a submerged relic for 22,000 residents and thousands of visitors each year who enjoy the lake's incredible beauty and recreation. Crack open a [CAN] of RED CLAY IPA and celebrate the spirit of the SUNKEN CITY. Red Clay IPA is a magnificent mix of heady malt gusto intertwined with a formidable combination of Amerii[CAN] hops. My doctor advises me that the voluntary ingestion of Red Clay may indicate the onset of pica! I’m sunk if that is the case! Is the font of this in Pica?

The Crack revealed that the CAN was full of Red Clay, so I initiated an inverted Glug to make sure that it all came out. Once the pseudo-cascade died down, it created nearly three fingers of dense, rocky, tawny head with good retention that immediately began to leave sticky lacing in its falling wake. Color was Deep Amber/Light Copper to Copper (SRM = > 13, < 17) with NE-quality clarity. Nose smelled of pine hops and caramel malt and I was suddenly less worried about pica. Mouthfeel was actually rather full, kind of creamy on the tongue. The taste was initially all hops, really going to town on my tongue until the malts suddenly decided to show up and rescue things. It was very much pine, so I am guessing Chinook or Simcoe. This is the kind of AIPA that I really dig! The intensity of the hops acts almost like mint, leaving my mouth cool and refreshed afterwards. It is precisely these kinds of beers that got me hooked on hops and turned me into a hophead in the first place. Its 7% ABV was pushing the upper limits for an AIPA as opposed to a DIPA, but the cool, minty finish allowed me to overlook such trivialities. I really liked the one I drank, but two, three at the most, would be my limit on this bad boy.

Can > Pint Glass
A - Comes out a rich amber color with two fingers of a creamy frothy off white head, thick lacing.
S - Lots of caramel malt, some toastiness, astringency.
T - Bitter pine and earthy hops, some citrus bite, very chewy sweet caramel malt, almost a toasted toffee to it.
M - Very chewy and thick feeling, lingering bitterness.
O - Decent, but its more of a Red IPA than anything, which is why im assuing its called Red Clay IPA. But the malt to hops balance is off.

Poured form a 12 OZ can into a pint glass.
Aroma- A nice mellow blend of hops and malt.
Appearance- A nice amber color with a medium sized white head.
Taste- Hops and citrus with some caramel tossed in
Palate- A medium bodied beer with moderate carbonation
Overall- A really good IPA, I bought this at the Bucket Trade in Chester, VA. I will go back and buy a sixer.

Poured from can to imperial pint

A- pours a clear and deep amber color with some ruby hue, two-finger creamy off-white head retains long after the pour, leaving a nice presentation

S- sweet bready malt with some caramel aromas, herbal & earthy hops with some woodsy notes

T- caramel malty sweetness with a big nutty backbone, bready, herbal and fruity hops on a dry finish

M- medium body with moderate carbonation leads to a creamy mouthfeel and a smooth finish

O- this is so malty that it drinks like an amber ale, rather than an ipa. Still very drinkable though

A: Great red color, much like the dirt in that area of VA. Thick head, good lacing
S: Cutting hop aroma, without pinpointing one particular hop variety. Would fall in the piney category. Overtones of grains and sweetness hit my nose as well.
T: Nicely bitter but not with a distinction of hops. I would assume big alpha acid hops were used to drive the bitterness up without overriding the malt flavor. Did not get the classic west coast IPA citrus bomb, but way bitter, not palate-wrecker bitter, but kepy me wanting more. Nice balance.
M: Thinly thick. Just how an IPA should be, hard hitting up front, and smooth finishing.

Yes, another canned beer courtesy of the creator of the canquest, woodychandler. Poured from a 12 oz. can. Has a amber color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is of hops, some pine. Taste is well balanced piney hops and caramel malts, light bitterness, highly drinkable. Feels medium bodied in the mouth and overall leaves me wanting another.
