Notes & Commercial Description:
Beer added by: Jason on 09-30-2013

A dark India Pale Ale packed with dank, resinous hops. The addition of de-bittered black malt creates a captivating dark color while crystal malt adds caramel-like flavors. Our flagship Black IPA delivers a sharp uppercut of citrusy, piney hop character with a subtle roast note in the finish. This beer is brewed entirely with organic malts.

Poured from a can into standard pint glass.

A- Dark brown pour with red highlights when held to the light. Dark creme head. Brown porter in appearance but the body looks a little less full.

S- Coffee beans, chocolate, herbs, fresh spruce, slightly mineral. Hops and malts definitely present.

T- Bitter chocolate hits the palate first, followed by sweet citrus and pine needles. Slightly resinous with little booze present. Subtle but lingering roast in the finish.

M- Medium with a smooth finish and moderate carbonation.

O- This is a good representation of a tough style. I typically don't love black ipa's, but they did a nice job of having both roast and hop notes present without being a porter or an ipa. Will enjoy again.

Pro-tip: this would make a great winter sipper (782 characters)

6-pack of cans bought at the brewing company.

A&S: Fizzy, but thick, light brown head with a hint of green. Cobweb like lacing on the glass, really pretty. Head doesn't retain very well. Deep opaque black colored beer, some bubbles around the glass, but not lively. What you would look for as far as aroma in a black IPA: hops more toward the front (piney and floral), but still a big presence of caramel malts and even hints of chocolate and earthiness.

T&M: Very piney, dank hops upfront. Not as much caramel as the aroma, almost more smokey. Carbonation is a little on the flat side, however the body fits well with the beer (higher side of medium).

Overall: I like this beer and I like the brewery. They seem to know what they are doing and I look forward to trying more of their brews in the future. (809 characters)

Pour is dark brown almost black with a good bit of creamy tight tan head and a decent lacing. Nose is fairly aggressive roasted malt and some light rich malt chocolaty aromas. Hops are faint and add a small hint of herbal grassy edge. Taste is heavily roasted, almost acrid, metallic twang, virtually no hop flavor other than a bitter grassy finish. A bit watery up front, thin feel, a bit messy. (400 characters)

Appearance: Pours a fudge brown color with a modest bubble show; a decent looking tan head forms, sticks somewhat and sheds some lacing

Smell: Black bread, chocolate and piney tones

Taste: Very roasty, up front, with black bread and chocolate; piney hops build in the middle, with a touch of orange peel; quite bitter through the finish

Mouthfeel: Medium body with moderate carbonation

Overall: Not a bad ABA but, from my perspective it is a bit over-roasted and a bit too bitter (488 characters)

Awesome beer - full of flavour, rich and fruity.

aroma: strong fruity cocoa with vanilla and orange

taste: orange, pine, grapefruit, cocoa, dark chocolate, orange marmalade and peel with slight vanilla bean and a hint of tropical fruit. Similar to a strong fruit cocoa punch - delicious!

thoroughly enjoyed this beer! (320 characters)
