Poured from a can into standard pint glass.
A- Dark brown pour with red highlights when held to the light. Dark creme head. Brown porter in appearance but the body looks a little less full.
S- Coffee beans, chocolate, herbs, fresh spruce, slightly mineral. Hops and malts definitely present.
T- Bitter chocolate hits the palate first, followed by sweet citrus and pine needles. Slightly resinous with little booze present. Subtle but lingering roast in the finish.
M- Medium with a smooth finish and moderate carbonation.
O- This is a good representation of a tough style. I typically don't love black ipa's, but they did a nice job of having both roast and hop notes present without being a porter or an ipa. Will enjoy again.
Pro-tip: this would make a great winter sipper

Awesome beer - full of flavour, rich and fruity.
aroma: strong fruity cocoa with vanilla and orange
taste: orange, pine, grapefruit, cocoa, dark chocolate, orange marmalade and peel with slight vanilla bean and a hint of tropical fruit. Similar to a strong fruit cocoa punch - delicious!
thoroughly enjoyed this beer!

12oz can from a mixed sixer picked up in Boulder, didn't make it to the brewery. Black color, decent head, looks like a stout or dark porter. Aroma is mostly roasted malt with hints if citrus. Flavor is very much like a hoppy porter with the malts taking the forefront and a hoppy citrus flavor floating in the background. Overall, not a bad beer at all.

First review on BA. Just picked up a six pack of this recent canning from the new Sanitas Brewery at Hazel's in Boulder, CO. After having visited the brewery a few weeks back, I was prepped with the knowledge of this soon to be canned delight.
This dark and full-bodied IPA is hoppy (bitter), piney, and resinous (with a malty and brown ale undertone). Smooth and almost silky towards the end, this new and winter-ready brew will serve well this season.

solid beer, better then their saison cans in many respects. this one pours a cocoa black from the can, a robust and creamy tan head, with coffee undertones, but it fades out real fast. the nose here is more malt than hops. so much roast and gnarly chocolate hops, it covers up the hops, all that comes through on the nose is bitterness. the flavor is better, all dark grain at first. chocolate and roasted barley, real dark and heavy, but with a light caramel sweetness before the pushing brutal hops kick in, all vegetal and summery and a little out of place among all the big malt. long bitter palate coating bitter finish, which stays forever on the palate. carbonation rocks, just enough and right for the style, but its weighted by the longest finish ever. good beer overall, not super drinkable, but better than the saison cans there. fin stuff, i need to get out there to sanitas.

Pours pitch black with finger width foamy head. Head retention and lacing is mild. Has a nice roasted, hoppy aroma. Coffee predominates the roasted aroma. Dark, roasted, malty taste up front, followed by a more hoppy, coffee finish. I know it is not a stout, but it does seem a little watered down, though. The coffee aftertaste is a strong and should be a little more malty. Overall, a very good beer. I am not sure what would make this a black IPA over a stout, though.
