Tasted from 12oz bottle. Pours pale yellow with a very thin lace head. Nose of light malt and some sweetness. There are some light hops and malt, but nothing jumps out on the palate. Body is full for a "lighter" lager, with average carbonation and no finish to speak of. (270 characters)

Hmm. A thin, pallid appearance and major skunky odor are immediately apparent with this Italian lager. Not a good place to start. Taste is weak, watery, and, well, bland. There's little to grasp taste-wise. I know there are some good craft brews from Italy, but I've yet to encounter one, unfortunately! Awful stuff here. (321 characters)

Here's a light, clear beer with a nice, puffy white head. There's a decent amount of clingy lace on the side of my glass. It's a light brew with a serious cereal grain and corn smell. It's really not very appealing. There's not much in the way of hops, but just a hint of ethanol. Not good. The taste is similar. With a bit of alcohol, the brew is pretty dry. It has a bitterness in the finish that's not quite pleasant. The adjuncts dominate the beer. Even among the sub-par beers in this market, this one is worse than most. The body is watery, but the off-flavors really set the tone for the brew. This is one of the few beers that I'd advise anyone to avoid. (662 characters)

Imported into the UK as 'Castello Premium' with Birra Friulana also on the front label.

Green 33cl bottle, poured into a Veltins Pilsner stemmed glass. Looks like a typical mass produced lager, golden, clear and with a pure white head on top.

Grass, hay and nothing beery in the aroma.

This is my first review this evening, I'm getting rid of a few oddments, I hope the others improve on this. A tasteless, featureless, nothingness of a beer.

Why do they export such dross to cold countries like the UK? If I was sweating my nuts off on an Italian beach surrounded by half naked females then I'd have enjoyed this. Trouble is, it's minus 7 outside and the wife is out.

This is one cheap lager and there is nothing 'premium' about it what so ever. (751 characters)

Tastes like any other Italian lager, perhaps a touch more hoppy. Still a bit sweetish and thin, and very easy to drink, nothing overly offensive, but nothing that great. (169 characters)

Light golden colour, with a reasonably decent head of white foam. Bit filmy after a while, but it does leave some nice lager lacing after a while. Not bad.

Slight bread yeast on the nose, with a bit of dryness, but otherwise, very little at all. Maybe a slightly chemical acidity. That's all. It's weak and unimpressive.

Taste is also very weak, with almost nothing. Slight acidity and prickly carbonation, some bready grain character and a finish of dry acidity, like cheap and nasty champagne.

Very dry, very pale and very, very empty. It's verging very close to being deeply offensive. Worth avoiding. (607 characters)

Clean yellow color, not light yellow like most US Mega lagers, white head that leaves soon. As I poured the beer the skunky aroma almost kept me from trying this beer. It has a bit, not much, more flavor than Mega-Swill lagers. About the middle of the glass the skunk aroma seemed, or I was getting desensitized to it, give way to a sort of grainy/grassy scent. Not my cup of tea, or beer for that matter. I don't know if the skunk was from travel and shelf life or is part of the regular components. If it is regularly smelly then I don't see me ever enjoying this one. (570 characters)

11.2 ounce bottle - $1.49 at Total Wine & More in Kennesaw, Georgia. Best Before End: 07.2010.

Appearance: Pours a clear, yellow body with a bubbly, thinning, white head. A typical lager thus far.

Smell: Sweet-scented, humble malted barley disparaged by displeasing, particularly strong scents of skunk and filthy, well-used coinage.

Taste: Light pale malts, lightly grainy and sweet. Light, spicy hop character and bitterness. Regrettably, you get a strong skunkiness and metallic twang forced upon you. It's pretty gross, and this well over eight months before the expiration date. Jesus, I'd hate to see how this stuff is past its prime. Finishes dry with the only tastes lasting this long being the bad ones.

Mouthfeel: Light-bodied. Medium-plus carbonation.

Drinkability: Some pale lagers are simply guilty of being bland and forgettable. Oh, if only that were the case here! This one's ghastly and just plain awful. (926 characters)

330ml bottle into a pint glass.

Pours a clear gold with a thin fizzy head that quickly disappears.

Smells of metal and stale cabbage. A tiny bit of bready gran.

Flavor is cooked vegetables and creamed corn. Slightly metallic also. Some faint grassy hops are present but everything fades away to a watery mess rather quickly. Mouthfeel is slick but really watery.

Overall this was a really disappointing beer. Very watery and just tasted stale. (447 characters)

A- Pale golden with a thin white head. Minimal retention and no lacing.
S- The aroma is quite sweet with some slight adjuncty aroma. Otherwise fairly clean.
T- The taste is the same. It has pretty much the same flavor as many euro pale lagers. A bit adjuncty at first, fairly clean in the finish.
M- Very light body. Carbonation is decently smooth at least.
O- It's an ok pale lager, but there's nothing here that excites me too much. (434 characters)

Nice green 66cl bottle for this cheap beer (1€) .
Among the best for the foam laces left (contains wheat) it comes in a pale amber colour and static bubbles, bad impressive.

Despite of the alchool accents,it has a average drinkability.

Hop in a sooooft taste.

For that price,it's not wasted money. (301 characters)

My first Italian beer review... always heard of Peroni and Birra Moretti.. but this one popped up out of nowhere at my beer store. Pours a pale golden color, head quickly dissipates, no lacing to it... has the corny/adjunct sort of smell to it.. oh no another mass produced import. Taste.. just as I expected, unfortunately. Basically a clone of Becks/St Pauli Girl/insert generic European beer here. Nothing off putting about the beer but just tastes like all the others, I like some uniqueness here. Cool to try something from Italy, but absolutely nothing original here. (573 characters)

Nothing really noteworthy here. A very light wheat flavor, almost almost no hops present. This is different than what most people have reported, so perhaps it's just my bottle?

Fortunately, there is nothing negative in the flavor content, just not a whole lot of positive. Because of that, it's very easy going down. Better than the majority of macro-beers, but that's not saying much. Worth drinking, but I don't think I'd bother paying for it unless there weren't any other options.

The appearance is golden with mild carbination, and almost no head. The scent was reminiscint of grapes, with a somewhat sweet bouquet.

Overall, a decent beer worth trying if you happen to really like Euro-lagers and want to try all of them out there. Otherwise, I'd pass. (768 characters)

A - Poured out a clear, straw-yellow color with a small, white, bubbly head. Short lived and left no lace.

S - It smelled mildly of grains, caramel and floral notes.

T - Sweet grain flavor with some caramel taste. Very, very mild spice from the hops.

M - It was fairly crisp but seemed a little watery at times. A light bodied lager.

D - This is was it is. A light Euro Lager with very little flavor. (404 characters)

Pours a two-fingered white head that fades quickly leaving traces of lace. Clear amber color. Skunky (what is it with green bottles??) but with a slight sweetness. Light carbonation and light bodied. Starts sweet, finishes clean but not much bite. Found at One Stop Oasis in Las Vegas, NV, $2.59 for a 330ml bottle. (315 characters)

An average Italian beer. Pours out to an attractive golden color with a small white head that calms to little more than a film of white bubbles over the beer. Lace is present, as are champagne like bubbles stemming from the bottom of the glass. Aroma stinks. I can't tell if this is what they were going for or if it's light struck (it is in a green bottle...). Flavor is mildly hoppy and hints of adjunct and malts are noted. Not bad, but i'm not impressed. Mouthfeel was compareable to water. Drinkability is average. Don't think i'll be back. (545 characters)

12oz Bottle

Appearance - The beer pours a clear golden yellow colour with a small fizzy white head. There really isn't much carbonation showing. There is some faint lacing on the sides of the glass and the head stuck around for only a few minutes before it was gone.

Smell - pilsner skunk, breads/grains, a grassiness

Taste & Mouth - The beer actually has a fair amount of carbonation, which is strange considering its appearance. It has the typical euro-beer flavour, slight skunkiness, breads/grains, and a grassiness. The beer finishes with a sweet corn syrup sweetness and slightly bitter hop aftertaste.

Drink - Just another average euro-beer. Not something I'd turn away if offered, but not something I'd seek out again. (730 characters)

Transparent amber-gold with one source of miniscule bubbles on the bottom center of the glass. The snow white head doesn't look half bad, reinforcing my notion that high-altitude pours result in good looking beer (in most cases). The cap is a big improvement on the vast majority of macro lagers and offers up more lace as well.

While it isn't a great nose, it's in the upper 50% for the style. Musty, slightly floral hops make up most of the aroma. I'm not sure what makes up the rest, I'm just glad it's nothing even remotely offensive.

The flavor profile lacks pizzaz. I know, I know, this style was built on a lack of pizzaz, but some versions do have a meager amount of it. Birra Italiana taste like lightly sugary sweet, untoasted pale malt and hops that have a one-dimensional, uninteresting flavor.

An impressive amount of lace in shredded sheets now decorates the majority of my nearly empty pint glass. The beer must be fairly drinkable since I've managed to down about eight ounces without even thinking about it. Actually, that might be the optimal way to approach it. The mouthfeel is light-medium and suits me just fine.

Castello Birra Italiana is forgettable beer, even while it's in the process of being consumed. What am I drinking again? Being the beer equivalent of Teflon isn't all bad since truly lousy beers are, unfortunately, all too unforgettable. This one is generic and stunningly average, but I've had much, much worse. (1,459 characters)

Gold like some straw Rummpelstilskin was weaving. Surprisingly sticky white head. Ok lacing. Small carbonation. Steady light streams. Smells like light malts with a touch of floral hops, and a pinch of skunk perfume. Sugary sweet with very little flavor. Light bodied with a slight carbnonation/hop bite in the finish. Moderately drinkable. (340 characters)

Pours true gold, with excellent clarity. Soapy one and a half finger head, poor retention, but leaves some sticky patches of lacing. Light-struck noble hops aroma, otherwise clean. First sip is toasted pilsener malt and a bit of ester. Mildy skunked saaz and/or hallertau aftertaste, but it is well balanced. Light body and medium, surprisingly smooth carbonation and mouthfeel. Finish reveals slight corny sweetness and more ester- borders an diacetyl, but nothing really offensive; drinks okay. (496 characters)

Thanks Jonny,

Pours a clean, straw yellow with a good thick head. Decent cling. The nose is your average Euro-lager blend of malt, hops, and skunk... a faint overripe fruit undertone lingers in the background. The overall *bleh* taste/mouthfeel is average at best, and would go better ice cold with food rather than as a session beer. I'm thinking spaghetti with clam sauce.... how about you? (395 characters)

Golden, but shading towards amber, short white head, fell a little into a thick film, laced well.
Light aroma, malt, some hop, reminiscent of a real pilsner, sulfur from the green bottle. Lemon and floral.
Light taste and feel, crisp. Truly meant for a hot climate.
Doesn't stand on it's own as something I'd like to drink, could be better with food. (353 characters)

I wasn't expecting much from this one as the only other Italian beer I've tried is Peroni, and I thought that it was pretty nasty. I was pleasantly suprized however by this light bodied brew.

I had this with a home-made pizza that my girlfriend and I made together in the tiny kitchen of my hole-in-the-wall apartment. I normally wouldn't really be drawn to a beer like this, but I got it in a variety ten pack mixer from World Market and I figured what the hell. Pizza is pseudo-Italian, this beer is authentically Italian. Makes sense.

This one is light on the scent side, and visually unappealing, but pretty tasty nonetheless. There were more malt flavors than I would have expected. It's pretty sweet, clean, carbonated, refreshing, and basic. Goes well with food, but probably too bland to drink just by itself. Has a "transparent" quality that doesn't add or detract from the meal; it's just...there.

Nothing special, but I would have it again if I saw it at an Italian restaurant. Could be quite sessionable, but I would choose a more interesting beer for that purpose. Also a very good beer to share with non-BA's as it is very unintimidating and shares lots of qualities with American macros, but is of a much higher quality. (1,244 characters)
