Bottled on date of August 2009, poured from a 22oz bottle into a US tumbler pint glass.

A: The beer is a bright amber color, with a thin off-white head that fades slowly and leaves a thick lace on the glass.

S: The aroma contains caramelized malts, Belgian yeast, some fruit and a touch of hops.

T: The taste starts out sweet with flavors of caramel, honey and fruit. Then a strong Belgian yeast breadiness comes in along with a hearty but not too heavy malt character. The hops presence is mild but complementary and brings a good balance. The after-taste is slightly sweet.

M: Crisp and smooth, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is slightly sticky.

D: Tasty, goes down easily, not too filling, good kick, good representation of style, this is a solid beer worth drinking for a long time.

Poured from the 22oz. bottle into a Harpoon 100 Barrel series tulip glass.

The color is a clear dark gold/amber with a finger or two of foamy white head but little lacing.

The smell is sweet and sugary, reminds me of sweet tarts and other sugar filled candy. There is a triple like nose aroma that gives a bit of Some floral aroma is present in the nose and is really sweet with little bitterness.

The taste is sweet with some floral flavor with some citrus flavor throughout this beer. There seems to be a different fruit flavor in each corner of this beer with some pear, apple, orange, and others. There is a small bitterness here and there to make this balance a bit.

The feel of this beer has a smooth feel and a rather big body. This beer does go down smooth but has a slack to the senses as it washes down.

Crystal clear, light amber in colour, with a thin skim of fine, whitish bubbles coating the beer's surface. Malty and toasted aroma, slight caramel, a bit of fruit and grassy hops, earthy strawberry sweetness. Moderate bitterness, but with considerable malty sweetness swaying the balance. Light toastiness, more fruit character (pears), light alcohol and slightly spicy in the finish. Medium bodied, average carbonation, decent texture. Overall I liked it. The flavour was a bit more muddled in the malt department than in the aroma, but still hit most of the right notes.

Pours medium orange with a light bubbly white head that ends up as a ring. No lace, nice clarity, no bubbles rising.

Some spicy malty notes and some honeysuckle sweetness with some funky yeast and alcohol.

This one changes as it warms. Some nice spicy notes, bitterness, dried out flavors (leading to bitter), chemical alcohol, and a big punch of honeyed sweetness. This beer is all over the place. The sweetness killed this for me, but funny enough, it seems less sweet as it warms -- which helped alot for drinkability -- it started to grow on me as I worked my way thru it. They got the spice, yeast, bitterness and funk right and then completely blew it with the sugar element. If they toned it down a bit, it would be pretty good.

Medium bodied and lightly carbonated. The beer is a bit cloying.

I give them props for trying the style, but they are miles away from perfection. The sweetness is too much. Right now, I have almost a full pint and about an inch in the bottle and I don't know if I'm going to finish this. If this is the first version of the style for anyone -- keep drinking and don't accept this as the norm. I have since edited my review, as this got better as I went along. Still, I wouldn't avoid but wouldn't chase this.

Amber color, with good clarity. Subtle smell, but a pretty complex nose to the beer. Very earthy malt/yeast flavors and aromas. Resembles an oktoberfest malt-bill with saisony yeast at the end of the sip. The carbonation works nicely in the mouthfeel. It does seem a bit tannic. The post sip mouthfeel is almost wine-like. I was surprised to see the ABV of this beer, alcohol is suiting to the beer. Interesting and unique beer.

Big thanks to the guys at Haverhill for the sample. 22 oz. bottle, with A09 notched. Brewed with a blend of six imported malts, noble hops and fermented with lager yeast at ale temperatures; unfiltered. Kind of a burnished copper, chill-hazed, with medium carbonation that builds up a finger of loose froth. Clears up nicely once it warms. Smells earthy, with a grainy malt note and a bit of yeast. The flavor adds breadiness, floral/perfumy hops and a hint of alcohol. Mouth-filling, almost chewy, with moderate carbonation and a dry finish. Quite the malty bière de garde, backed with spicy/perfumy hops and yeast. Punchy, but tastes quite authentic and I feel it would age well.

22 oz bottle

A: Copper body under a small white head. No lace, no retention.

S: Caramel, malt, toasted, earthy, well balanced.

T: Sweet malt, slightly honey like, a bit earthy, floral, very mild bitterness, very faint alcohol.

M/D: Medium bodied, carbonation is a touch high but not off putting. Good drinkability, very solid beer.

This was my first experience with Haverhill Brewery - we found this bottle at a store in Allston, Mass. so we thought we would give it a try. Here are my notes:

This beer has a beautiful dark gold colour, cloudy, with light lacing and some carbonation. The smell is what I would describe as a very ale-like odour; I was made immediately aware of the powerful yeast and fermented grain in the aroma and it wasn't until I tasted the beer that I could at all detect other flavours.

The hops are very spicy, and increasingly present as you swallow. I tasted clove, allspice and pine amidst the strong caramel tone, which almost risked being syrupy if it weren't for the hops character.

The beer mellowed as it opened up and became much warmer; something you could drink in cool weather also. I found it to be a wonderfully balanced and smooth libation.

I was happy to see this at Julio's - poured from the 22oz chilled into a tulip.

A - An orange color with decent clarity and full off white capp which is rocky and leaves sufficient lace, the retention is good and bead is tight

S - The smell has a mild floral note with subtle fruit which hints at pear and golden apple, there is a mild spice and toaste element to the aroma

M - The feel is very good with plenty of malt texture and high effervescent aspect with mild sweetness and dry finish

T - The flavor is great, plenty of contribution from the yeast with mild fruit notes and slight spice while the toasted, but not quite nutty flavor of the malt seems biscuity with a gentle sweet, yet smooth quality. The finish has more hop in it and the beer refreshes with a dry finish

D - I am always open to Biere De Garde as a style, but this was a great example to me. I could really get the sense that the malt was important and yet there is a lot of yeast flavor while the whole presention blends well -tasty!

Many thanks to krisandajt for bringing this back from Julio's for me. You are a good man Joe. Bottled in August 09.

Pours a rich amber color with about two fingers of creamy beige head. Head keeps pretty well, with a mostly full lace and a splash coating the outside as well.

Smell is quite sweet, like honey, with some must, lemon zest and a bit of grass as well.

Taste is also on the sweet side, with a honey like flavor, plus some bready malt. It's quite earthy with a bit of must and a sort of "dirty" flavor too. I really don't get any of the grassy or lemony qualities that were in the nose, although they were subtle there to begin with. There is some bitterness and some of that earthy/dirty flavor in the finish.

Mouthfeel is on the plus side of a medium body, pretty creamy. I'd like it if it were a bit crisper and more smooth however.

This is a decent beer, and not a bad stab at the style. Worth a shot.

Courtesy of ShogoKawada. Poured from a 22oz bomber into my Ayinger Celebrator glass. Bottled August, 2009.

Clear (until the last pour when the yeast contributes a cloudiness), dark orange liquid with amber highlights. Tiny active off-white head replenishes itself with a flurry of ascending bubbles. Decent lacing, thin legs.

Nice depth of malt in the nose, backed by toasted sourdough notes. Faint lager-like sweetness as well.

Toasted and pale malts, caramel, and faint banana on the palate. Sweet and slightly grainy throughout - a touch of spice and a light bitterness in the finish balances out the sugars.

Almost medium-bodied, buttery, somewhat slick in fact. Refreshing, fairly crisp...

Complex malt profile, though I could use a little more balanace to dry out the finish.

Gold color with a tinge of haze. Moderate head level, but it has some good lasting power. The lace is half slippery and half sticky.

Soured malt aroma. Light citrus in the background. Seems like there's a touch of wheat to the nose.

Interesting flavor in a good way. Complex with a pleasant sourness and decent level of hop. Not quite a farmhouse ale from France--the taste is well blended and less extreme. The body is as expected with a relatively high level of carbonation.

22oz bottle purchased as a single from Julio's, Westboro, MA.

Poured into an imperial pint glass, formed a 1/4" off-white head over the cloudy amber brew. Head fizzles down as I watch, with average to good lacing. Aroma is moderately sweet, a bit of funk, and robust spiciness. Taste follows the nose, sweet, funk, then spicy, with a clean close. Mouthfeel is pretty smooth, and drinkability is good. A little beefier than other reps of the style I have had, nice stuff.

Poured from a 750 ml. bottle into a Hennepin flute.

A--Golden tawny medium orange body with a one finger tannish fizzy head. Almost cola-like with lively carbonation. Champagne-like---nice for the style.

S--Uhh. Different. Lemon, honey, a little grass, but mostly granny smith appleskins. Like really tangy, "green" apple scent. Almost vinegary. Lager yeast? Smells deep and almost mineral, rather than bright and spicy like a Belgian ale yeast. Weird, but not bad weird. Just...different.

T--oh, ok. I think I'm getting. This is one of those platypus beers--a Marzen cross-bred with a Biere de Garde. Fair enough, but I don't see a lot of the latter's characteristics coming through. Almost zero earthiness. Malty toffiness? Nope. Just the carbonation and the lemony tanginess. If you consider Thiriez's Biere de Noel a Biere De Garde then maybe this matches up, but I'm not buyin it. Again, though, that punch of apple tanginess comes through the middle of the flavor profile stridently. More one-dimensional, I'd say, like a lager, which isn't a bad thing, except a BdG should have more going on.

M&D--Mouthfeel's spritzy, makes for a light and refreshing sip. Drinkability? Meh. I don't think I'll be revisiting this one. Frankly, this brew doesn't convince me the brewery can master a single style, let alone a hybrid like this. I'm all for innovation, but you gotta know the rules before you can break em.

DrDogbeer sent this as bart of BA Secret Halloween 09

22 oz bottle poured into a St. Bernardus goblet. Thin, bready looking head that recedes to a ring around the edge. Color is a hazy orange hue.

It smells like an orchard. Apples and pears, dried leaves and wood. Taste has a tartness of apple skins. A little grass greenness. Interesting malt twist with a hint of chocolate.

Mouthfeel is light, clean, and refreshing. I want more and more, it drinks incredibly well. I really like this

slightly hazy copper, thin head leaving just a wisp on glass.

Nice clean nose with slight floral scent.
Medium body on the tongue. Some good flavors here. Caramel
up front, a taste of honey. Finish brings out
malt on the back of tongue.

Very drinkable. One of Haverhill's finest.
