Notes/Commercial Description:
Named after our friend Jason, this slick, deep-brown semi-sweet brew is just what you need to fend off Old Man Winter. We make it with local maple syrup from Ben’s Sugar Shack in Temple, NH. Perfect before, during or after a hearty meal.

The beer pours a dark brown, near black. It form a half finger’s width head of very lightly tan, creamy bubbles with a lack luster retention. In body, the beer is dark ruby in the light, but clean and clear of particles. It is nearly opaque, but does allow light to travel through its body. On the nose, the beer smells of sweet roasted malts, nuts, coffee, and a touch of maple syrup and honey. Coffee with cream and maple syrup for sugar comes to mind. Slight herbal and grassy hops ghost at the edges of the scent. On the tongue, the beer tastes syrupy sweet with a soft breadiness and a nice balancing bitter roast. This is a sweet beer, but it is nowhere near cloying, and is actually quite perfectly balanced towards the sweet-side. Acidity is light to non-existent, and hop bitters don’t seem to be present, which leaves the beer a bit one-dimensional, but still interesting and tasty. In flavor, the beer begins as sweet syrup, but then melds into medium roasted malts with a touch of light roast coffee. The flavor then plunges again into richer maple syrup flavors with just a touch of woodsiness and cream on the finish. The finish is a little quick for what I want, but does seem to last on the tongue nicely. Aftertastes are light but seem to be of sweet roast. In the mouth, the beer feels medium in body, with a slightly watery mouthfeel that allows for superb drinkability, but leaves me desiring a little more oomf and tug from this style of beer. The mouth is left clean but wet with spittle. Overall, this is a nice sweet porter with some nicely balanced maple syrup flavors. The beer is a bit one-noted and lacks depth, but is tasty and complete in what it is. This is a maple syrup porter, plain and simple.

Consumed 1/26/13

Appearance: Dark brown with a small, off-white head - disappears quickly, no cap, small ring, minmal lacing

Smell: Lightly malty with some sweetness - dark, mildly roasty - some caramel, kind of smells more like a brown ale than a porter - some light sweetness in the background that smells more like candy than maple - not bad, very mild and not particularly maple-y

Taste: If this is supposed to be a session porter, it works - roasty, dark malts - lightly toasted grains, caramelized malts, and caramel candy - while it was oddly missing from the aroma, the maple syrup is nicely integrated into the flavor - lightly sweet, nicely contrasts the roast - slight nuttiness as well - mild overall

Mouthfeel: Light body, low carbonation, some maple syrup stickiness

Overall: Not bad, but Swanny Man might be better

I bought this beer because I had a vague memory of enjoying it on-tap at The Tap (LOLOLOL) a couple years ago. It's not as good as I remember, but it's worth drinking. It would definitely be great with food. An imperial version, with bigger malts, would have some serious potential.

Had at home in a 8oz glass. My friend Sarah brought home a growler from an outing.

A-Dark brown body, thin tan head.

S-Malty, some floral, not much discernible maple smell

T-nice vanilla flavor in the front, not fake tasting. Ends with a slight kiss of hop bitterness.

M-Slick. nice carbonation prickle.

D-Very nice beer to drink but I am missing the sense of maple flavor here. If you told me this was vanilla porter I would think that to be more of the case.

Nice creamy 1/2 finger head fades at a med pace, nice lacing, fairly dark but semi clear maroon cranberry color.

Nose has some dirty brown malts, toasty brown malts with a hint of cocoa, caramel, nutty, hint of maple and syrupy aromas.

Taste is sweet, candy, light maple, light caramel and candy, slight syrupy, toasty malt light brown malts, hint of yeasty flavor, toffee, nutty. As it finishes the yeast comes out more, little syrupy sweet flavors, sticky.

Mouth is med bodied, plenty of carb, bit syrupy.

Overall meh, light and nothing special, barely any maple, yeasty too, and malts are lackluster.

Freshness: Not indicated
Packaging: 22 oz. brown bottle, pry-cap
Glassware: Globe glass
Purchased: Received in a trade

Appearance has a massive off-white head sitting on the clear, dark brown beer. The head is made up of small tight bubbles and sticks around a long time. The glass lacing is excellent.

Aromas are malty, bready, woody and earthy. The toasted malt gives it some coffee smells.

Taste has hints of brown bread and coffee-like roasted grains, but there's no maple I can pick up. It also isn't what I'd call sweet, as they list on the label, but rather has some astringency to it.

The mouthfeel has a high carbonation to it, maybe too much in fact, with a medium body. Aftertastes have coffee and toasted malts. The finish is pretty dry.

Overall I'd say this is an average porter with some flaws. It also came up short as far as billing itself as a sweet, maple brew.

Thanks to DrewShal9 for the trade!

Thanks to JLindros for sharing this brew.

A - Poured a coppery dark mahogany clear hue with a thin brown blanket and nice light lacing. Little underwhelming.

S - Metal, roasted malts. No maple whatsoever. Incredibly meh. As it warms up little hints of maple syrup.

T - Taste is thin and light flavoured. Some light roasted malts and chocolate water. Ehh. Maple comes out as it warms slightly.

M - Mouthfeel is highly carbonated, almost distractingly so.

O - Overall, relatively underwhelmed by this beer. Rather unimpressive.
