Rye, Bready, Toffee, Vanilla
This farmhouse ale was brewed with floor-malted barley and rye, and aged in oak. Hazed coppery color with tremendous head and lace. Rye bread, spice and some metallic in the nose. So damn creamy on the palate. Mild sweetness with toasty and bready malts upfront and deep wood notes, subdued toffee and hints of vanilla beneath. This is balanced by a refreshing lime smack, crisp edge and dryness. Earthy and spicy rye finish with hints of esters and tannins. Fall Saison is another fantastic rustic offering from Blackberry Farm. And I'm in no way feeling bad about drinking this in the winter.
As reviewed in BeerAdvocate magazine #109 (February 2016).

2nd Bottling
Appearance: Pours a slightly cloudy copper color with a noisy three finger head that fades away at a moderate pace; squiggles linger
Smell: Smells like mulled cider with a blast of caramel; apple, pear, fig, allspice and clove tones, as well
Taste: Caramel dipped apple and pear flavors forward with the mulled flavors of fig, allspice and clove developing; a blend of all flavors lingers into the finish
Mouthfeel: Medium body with low to moderate carbonation
Overall: Interesting how this has oxidized over the years; the spicy rye is gone but the remaining flavors taste more like Fall than ever

A: The beer is hazy orange amber in color—too hazy to see if there is any visible carbonation. It poured with a short white head that quickly died down, leaving wisps of bubbles on the surface and a narrow collar around the edge of the glass.
S: Moderate aromas of earthiness are present in the smell.
T: The taste has flavors of earthy yeast along with notes of grainy malts and subtle bits of caramel malts. A faint amount of bitterness is perceptible.
M: It feels a bit shy of being medium-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: The earthiness of this saison makes for a nice variation of a saison during the winter months. I could see this working well with roasted meats.
Note: 2016 vintage

Getting away from the summer season, the fall saison of Blackberry Farm brewery takes on a darker and deeper demeanor.
Fall Saison casts an aromatic display of fresh yeast, toast, pepper, citrus and perfume. Burnt orange and hazy with a copper gaze, the beer rounds off with a creamy, spirited, frothy foam stance. Flavors spill onto the early palate with light caramel, pecan, toast and a candied taste of confectioner's sugar.
As the ale steadily releases its tasty secrets, the sweetness dissolves on the middle palate and allows for a estery collection of tastes. Orange, apricot, spiced pear, date and fig tread lightly on a slightly vinous acidity. Peppercorn, allspice, clove and paradise seed hint toward fennel and anise for both balance and complexity.
Slightly robust in taste, but the beer's mouthfeel is creamy and zesty to start but drying beautifully to close. The beer's finish is peppery, winey and toasty while its peppercorn and toasty remnants echo in a medium length aftertaste. Fall saison is a wonderful beer that garners what's best about rustic farmhouse ale and abbey dubbel; ideal for duck pastrami, beer breads and bubbling raclette.

This was poured into a tulip. The appearance was a hazy burnt orange color with a one finger sustaining white to off white foamy head. The head must last for a good two minutes before trying to dissipate. Lacing moderately speckled the glass in a messy sort of way. The smell started off with a dried sweet to spicy rye malt entering into a light sweet toffee and vanilla. Dried woody edge enters in as it warming. The taste had a great balance between the sweet vanilla and toffee to run into the spices of the rye. Woodiness helps to alleviate the sweet edge just a tad and help to round out a nice smooth spicy and sweet aftertaste and finish. On the palate, this one sat about light to medium bodied with a good sessionability about it. Carbonation runs good for the style and for me. Sweetness enlightens a soft feel and the spiciness enlivens a nice harshness on my tongue. Overall, wow, this is really good. Wonder if all of their beers are this good. Also, this would be wonderful with beef stew.
