Notes/Commercial Description:
The Dunkel Weizen is our American styled hefeweizen with colored malts added to give the brew its light brownish color with a hint of caramel and roasted flavors. American Crystal hops provide a slight bitterness and add a very light hop flavor. We used an American hefeweizen yeast strain that is flavor neutral.

A - Poured a cloudy, brown/burgundy color with a small, tan head of thick foam. It had nice retention and left some sudsy lace.

S - It smelled of wheat, clove and some toasty malt.

T - Nicely done. Good wheat and clove flavors. A touch of banana with a nice toasty malt backbone.

M - It was crisp, sharp and smooth. A light to medium bodied ale.

D - Apparently they've improved the recipe since the other review, because this was nice.

Latest version, sampled on tap at the pub, is 5.5% ABV. The current brewer made a dunkelweizen a couple of years ago that was not true to form in that it had no darker malt character. It was a hefeweizen in appearance, aroma, and taste. And not a bad one, at that. Now perhaps the pendulum has swung too far. The new version does look like a dunkel, and has some darker malt aspects and some sweetness, but absolutely no discernible weizen yeast affects. No ester/clove/banana/spicy/fruity thing going at all. Perhaps the darker malt profile has hidden the classic weizen taste and aroma in this beer? That may be a stretch, I don’t know. But something went wrong. Very disappointing.
