Named for Flat Branch's general manager's son, Owen Porter, who decided to come into the world early. This is our traditional Baltic Porter, one of our favorite beers. Our version uses four specialty malts to achieve its dark color and rich flavor. Malty sweet and roasted without any burnt flavors. Hopping is low to allow the malt flavors to dominate.

Pours a dark black color. 1/3 inch head of a pale tan color. Great retention and poor lacing. Smells of roasted malt, sweet malt, slight hops, and slight alcohol. Fits the style of a Baltic Porter. Mouth feel is smooth and sharp with an average carbonation level. There is also a noticeable bitterness associated with this brew. Tastes of roasted malt, hops, slight alcohol, and slight sweet malt. Overall, the acidity level is negligible, but still a good porter.

Appearance: Deep dark black with a very thin head but nice tan lace.
Smell: Tones of coffee and roasted malt.
Taste: It has an earthy flavor a bit nutty, dark chocolaty with some burnt sugar flavor. It has low alcohol as far as ABV but high as far as flavor.
Mouthfeel: Smooth except for the alcohol burn.
Overall: Pretty good It would not be my first choice but goes well with their deserts.

A - Poured an opaque, jet black color with a small, thin, tan head. It left minimal lace on the glass.
S - It smelled nutty and of roasted malts. There was a slightly grassy smell.
T - It tasted of roasted malt, molasses and a nutty flavor. This is sweet and smooth with very little bitterness.
M - It was soft, smooth and somewhat creamy. A medium-bodied brew.
D - This is a pretty good porter. Based on the other review it has been improved in recent years.

This could be a one word review, and that word would be "not." Because this is NOT a Baltic Porter. 5.5% ABV and 17 IBU alone do not a good Baltic Porter make. This is a thin, lackluster beer, with minimal roastiness and no discernible hop profile. Probably closer to the old Brown Porter style - a style best left to antiquity. Can't even hold up to a run of the mill micro Porter like Bell's, Sierra Nevada, Boulevard, etc. I guess this beer would be nice (slight) change of pace beer for Brown Ale lovers. Even were it not labeled "Baltic," it would be a disappointment.
