New from Nowhere is our red wine barrel-aged Flanders Red. The aroma is bright with cherries, vanilla, & funk. The flavor starts out with raspberry, strawberry, and oak, quickly followed by a puckering sourness, and a long, red fruit-drenched finish. A bit lighter in body & tarter than Empty Hats, News From Nowhere is intense while offering a nuanced array of flavors.

750ml bottle poured into a snifter
Pours brown in color with a ruby hue, one-finger foamy off-white head with short retention. Smells of acidic vinegar, dark cherries, brown sugar, woody oak, hint of vanilla. Tastes of tart dark cherries, followed by acidic vinegar, brown sugar, strawberry and oak. Medium body with moderate-low carbonation that continues into the finish.

Bottle.
Aroma: Vanilla, cherries.
Taste: Sour in the front and little bit sharp. Red-fruits, cherries, raspberry come after and finish with oak.
Mouthfeel: Strong bubbles feeling and turn into dryness.
Overall: It's a cool beer with complex flavor. It's easy to fine fruits, vanilla, oak flavor.

12 oz bottle into a tulip
Mahogany colored beer, thin, little visible carb, no head.
Strong, sweetened berries at the front of the bouquet. The added boysenberries smell like strawberries against the rest of the brew. Light lactic acid and a touch of funk round things out.
Tart, juicy berries anchor the flavors. Not as funky as the nose, as a veritable avalanche of unripe berry essence squeezes out subtleties and nuances. Alcohol warms toward the end, finishes crisp and sour. Light mouthfeel leaves little residuals between sips.

Had on tap. Pours a light reddish-brown with moderate head and lacing. Smell and flavor are funky and quite sour with vanilla, cherry, and lots of sherry. Slightly boozy (this vintage comes in at 9% abv).

Appearance - The beer poured a dark reddish color with white bubbles aggressively crowning the top of the glass.
Smell - Cherries are fresh in the nose, with hints of the sour yet to come.
Taste - Fresh cherries come at the front, but are quite acidic. The barrel aging is only hinted by the oakiness. The sourness drives out the sweetness, making for a dry aftertaste.
Mouthfeel - The bubbles are not only visible, but they are action packed in the mouth. This leads to the sense of dryness.
Overall - This does not even touch the best Flanders ales.

Bottle
A: Moderate cherries, dark fruit, lightly sweet, with light funk, faint vanilla and oak.
A: Orange/red color, clear, with an off-white, dense, head that has great retention.
T: Cherry, dark fruit flavors, followed by a moderate sourness with a hint of acetone that lasts through the finish.
M: Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. The beer is lightly acidic, but pleasing.
O: Solid; the beer has a great balance of components, but could be even better with a bit cleaner sourness.

Nose of cherry, vanilla, and funk, just like the brewery's description says. Taste is much the same for me, with an excellent balance between flavors, and between sweet and sour characteristics. Dangerously easy to drink. Balsamic vinegar notes are there but muted, and complement the beer. It's an impressive drink, although I wouldn't say it's any bargain at the $30 price point; while I am happy to have tried it, I won't chase it in the future.
