Notes & Commercial Description:
Beer added by: Pecan on 07-11-2013

Fortunate Islands shares the characteristics of an uber-hoppy IPA and an easy drinking wheat beer. A massive dose of Citra and Amarillo hops gives it a blastwave of tropical hop aromatics: mango, tangerine, and passionfruit all leap out of the glass. Brewed with 60% wheat malt, Fortunate Islands also has the mild, nutty malt backbone, reasonable ABV, and restrained bitterness to make it an outstanding session beer.

A: slightly cloudy, dirty gold color. Won't say it's a very pretty beer, just average.

S: Citra right up front. Juicy pineapple and citrus with some dank ness.

T: up front bitterness that mellows nicely, citrusy

M: thin bodied, easy drinker, low ABV is good because this is definitely an outside beer

Really enjoyable beer. Picked up while on vacation in SD. Like others said, very much like Gumballhead, which I love. (422 characters)

I LOVE this beer! It is a citrus-y, tropical fruity, yet hoppy, wheat beer. ... Let that all soak in for a bit. Just a really enjoyable -- and surprising -- drinking experience. Highly recommended. (197 characters)

From BeerAdvocate Magazine #85 (Feb 2014):

Tropical, Hoppy, Wheat, Crushable

Named appropriately, this beer opens up with big fruity, tropical citrus notes. Stone fruits, mango, and passion fruit on the tongue. Hoppy but not bitter. Some leafiness and hint of dankness. Slightly wheaty, husky edge. Nutty and sweet malts provide balance. Palate is left wanting more. This is an outstanding hybrid beer (American Wheat Ale meets IPA) with an insane level of drinkability.

Probably my favorite wheat beer I've ever had because it tastes like a tropical pale ale. Real nice hop flavor, very smooth drinkable and refreshing. (149 characters)

I loved this hoppy tropical wheat beer at Hunaphu Day 2015. This was refreshing on a hot florida day. Very good beer. (117 characters)

Can dated 12/12/14, poured into a snifter 2/1/15.

A- Darker copper body, lighter than most wheat beers. Two finger white head, good retention time, thick lacing.

S- Sharp pine aromas mellowed by sweet caramel malt. Tropical fruit, but more resinous smelling than aromatic.

F- Very grainy, sweet pale malt evoking grains and caramel. Not as much of a hoppy presence as in the nose. Fair tropical fruit presence. Quite malty, with a decent pine bitterness on the backend.

M- Thinner bodied, good carbonation and nice effervescence. Finish is a grainy sweet maltiness.

O- Decent, nice graininess and the hop aromas complement the graininess nicely for a wheat beer. Very drinkable and tasty. (695 characters)

This stuff is dope as hell. Super hoppy; tropical as shit, bursting with mango, tangerine, passion fruit, guava, & load upon load of wet, weedy, mildly dank hops. Crisp body, drying finish from the wheat.

Reminds me of a miniature Alpine Nelson that you can smash all day with a little less of a hop presence but substantial punctuality given the lower ABV. I'm comparing the Zr1 to a Z06, here.

This blows Gumballhead out of the water by a light-year or two. It isn't even close. If this is available to you & you aren't drinking it, get your head checked, son. (565 characters)

Gorgeous golden hue with excellent clarity. A quarter inch of eggshell white is present. Moderate lacing. Aroma is wallop of citrus hops with faint pale wheat. The flavor is a sharp, bitter citrus hop flavor. There's pale wheat there, but it is a background note. The mouth is light, crisp, and smooth. (308 characters)

On Tap

Churchill's Pub & Grille
San Marcos, CA

Clear light golden. Nice collar of white foam atop. Moderate, spotted stick down the glass.

Sweet, juicy citrus leads the way--the aroma, especially as the beer warms, seems to have a pineapple presence to it. Very nice and quite appropriate for the style.

Moderate bitterness, pineapple fruit character lent from the hops, mild sweet, biscuit malt character as well. Exceptionally drinkable.

Thinner-medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Good enough, though a bit thin and a touch watery.

Tasty low-ABV pale. Very drinkable. (581 characters)

What's this California can trend where they are loading up some great beers into 16 ounce pounders. A proper pint in a can, this innovative wheat beer from California has been on my radar and a great beer/cigar guy named David Ford aka deford sent me a couple of cans along with other Cali canned craft creations...that's alliteration my friends.

Pours a hazed golden orange glowing hue with bright white head forming thick and creamy with even banded lacing left between each sip. The awesome Modern Times font on that big white background on the 16 ounce pounder can is just makes me want to try more beer from them.

Aroma they dry hopped this one using Amarillo and Citra hops, guess what it smells like? Tropical fruit, citrus notes, sharp wheat, a touch of coconut or something rather interesting that I've never smelled in a beer before. A bit of sulfur or some component of fermentation is in there as well.

Flavor bright citric notes, wheat malts, expressive tropical fruit accents. Not as hoppy bitter as it would seem, linger hop resins but the dry hopping must have left the bitterness out. Crushed aspirin, wheat malt, soft finish. Unique beer across the board incredibly drinkable built for pounder cans weighs in at 46 IBUs and about 4.5% abv.

Mouthfeel creamy slightly resinous hop oils on the palate. Even flowing carbonation each sip is that much better...I'm really enjoying a can of this beer.

Overall, well done ale made in San Diego canned in a pounder variant, and tastes pretty freakin' good. (1,524 characters)
