American Pale Wheat Ale |  4.80% ABV

Availability: Year-round

Notes/Commercial Description:
Fortunate Islands shares the characteristics of an uber-hoppy IPA and an easy drinking wheat beer. A massive dose of Citra and Amarillo hops gives it a blastwave of tropical hop aromatics: mango, tangerine, and passionfruit all leap out of the glass. Brewed with 60% wheat malt, Fortunate Islands also has the mild, nutty malt backbone, reasonable ABV, and restrained bitterness to make it an outstanding session beer.

I would rank this as one of the best of the new line of hoppy wheat session beers. Modern times certainly captured the big, tropical citrus aroma of the west coast ipa, and melded that into an easy-drinking afternoon sipper with just a touch of wheat body. Yellow gold in color, the beer has a thinner head that leaves minimal lacing. The aroma draws me in big time: guava, passion fruit, some orange peel. on the palate you get restrained bitterness with a touch of acidity, and a light to medium body due to the grain bill. the wheat gives it a better mouthfeel than some of the beers in this 4-5% session range. clean finish.

A: Pours a cloudy light golden color with a 1 1/2 finger head that dissipates slowly, good lacing.
S: Tropical fruits with pineapple, orange, mango. Light pine and malt.
T: Again with tropical fruits and malt.
M: Light body, medium carbonation, light bitterness, and a slight dry finish.
O: Very easy to drink. Would be perfect for drinking all day long on a hot summer day.

Appearance - A golden yellow with a slight haze. A two inch, off-white head that is soft and fluffy. Leaves lacing on the glass as the head dissipates.

Aroma - Fruity hop flavors (pineapple, mango, passion fruit). Slight touch malt in the back end.

Taste - Same as the aroma.

Mouthfeel - Smooth, refreshing, light to medium bodied, not overly bitter, crisp.

Overall - A flavorful and refreshing brew; perfect for a hot summer day!

Poured from a 16 oz can into a pint glass. Don't see a "canned on" date, so can't speak to freshness. Drinking with a Trader Joe's corn masa chicken pizza. I'll let the Cicerones tell me whether that's a good pairing or not.

A - Light golden color with a little bit of haze. Barely a half finger of white foamy head with 2-3 minutes retention. Constant stream of bubbles rising to the surface. Getting quite a bit of foamy lacing.

S - I am reminded of when Shocktop attempted to make a "wheat IPA," except this actually smells good. Nice aggressive piney hop presence in the nose with a little bit of fruitiness. If I did a blind smell of this beer, my guess would have been IPA or extra pale.

T - After the first sip I said "wow." Up front it's a blast of earthy hop flavor, but with a very distinct bread-like wheat finish. Citrusy sweet throughout. Very nice.

M - Feels a little heavy up front, but that aggressive hop profile cleans your palate and finishes nice and dry.

O - As I've gotten more into craft beer, I pretty much wrote off American wheat ales. Modern Times has renewed my faith in US brewers. Excellent beer, and at less than $3 for a pint and 4.8% ABV, I could drink this all day.

A: slightly cloudy, dirty gold color. Won't say it's a very pretty beer, just average.

S: Citra right up front. Juicy pineapple and citrus with some dank ness.

T: up front bitterness that mellows nicely, citrusy

M: thin bodied, easy drinker, low ABV is good because this is definitely an outside beer

Really enjoyable beer. Picked up while on vacation in SD. Like others said, very much like Gumballhead, which I love.
