Fortunate Islands shares the characteristics of an uber-hoppy IPA and an easy drinking wheat beer. A massive dose of Citra and Amarillo hops gives it a blastwave of tropical hop aromatics: mango, tangerine, and passionfruit all leap out of the glass. Brewed with 60% wheat malt, Fortunate Islands also has the mild, nutty malt backbone, reasonable ABV, and restrained bitterness to make it an outstanding session beer.

Tipped off to this from The Mad Fermentationist - my keg of homebrew hefeweizen is nearly kicked, so now is a good time to try this. Poured from a pint can into my Moonlight shaped pint glass.

Gorgeous gamboge to amber gradient, cloudy with an active white cap that recedes to a delicate half finger; weakly soapy lacing, vague legs.

Lovely herbaceous/citrus combination from the amarillo and citra hops - a pungent fruity/weedy aroma with a hint of cotton candy.

Tang and lemongrass on the palate, sweet and tart but drying out with an increasing slightly grainy malt note into the finish. The caravienna seems to come through loud and clear, despite probably being a very small percentage of the malt bill. Mild bitterness throughout.

A little thin perhaps, with a sensation of astringency from the hop oils. Could do with a little more carbonation to increase the body, but then this might increase the bite of the hops a bit too much?

This is a clever beer, but I'm not sure the heavy hopping mates well with the wheat base - an IPA or a wheat beer can be refreshing on a hot day (97F as I type this), but I don't think the fusion works for me.
