American Pale Ale (APA) |  5.20% ABV

Availability: Summer

Notes/Commercial Description:
2014 Release:
Oneida is a vigorously hoppy, aromatic pale ale saturated with Hallertau Blanc, Cascade & 05256 hops, a new experimental variety. A stripped down malt bill keeps the focus on the fruity, complex, pungent hop aroma & flavor.

HOP VARIETALS: Hallertau Blanc, Cascade & experimental Hop 05256
MALT VARIETALS: Two Row & Carapils

2013 Release:
Oneida is Nelson-centric. The dark fruity dankness of Nelson hops from New Zealand give it an uber-pungent aroma, with the grapefruity citrus of Cascade providing a touch of balance. While more aggressively bitter than Fortunate Islands, Oneida still has a light body and moderate ABV. 50 IBU
HOP VARIETALS: NELSON SAUVIN • CASCADE
MALT VARIETALS: PALE MALT • CARAPILS

Twenty-two ounce bottle.

A: Pours a clear straw yellow with a quater-inch thick white head which fades to a thin cap and yields semi-rings and splotches of lace.

N: Tropical fruits (passion and mango), citrus (grapefruit and tangerine) with faint malt.

T: Citrusy and a bit of pine and faintly vinous. Grassy and a touch of herbal notes.

M: Semi-moderate body and carbonation. Dry, softly herbal, citrusy finish.

O: Well balanced with a light malt. Easy drinking. Refreshing. Would have again.

A hazy, creamy orange and very light copper in color. Creamy near-white head which leaves lots of sticky lines of creamy stick down the glass. Very pretty, and it immediately reminded me of Alpine Nelson, which is always a very, very good thing.

Expressive Nelson hop component in the aroma: grapefruit flesh, floral components, and a bit of a sweet, freshly-baked bread character. Very nice.

Moderately bitter with expressive Nelson hop flavors. Discernible. Crisp and very drinkable flavors.

Medium bodied, slightly creamy. Moderate carbonation.

Like Alpine Nelson Jr. I liked this one a lot. I would certainly love to see this one in cans!

Pale yellow, hazy brew topped with a very fluffy snow-white head. Good retention and wide, thin fields of lacing. Lots of center-glass carbonation.

Big hop aroma immediately upon uncapping. Bright, indistinguishably fruity hops; light dank sweetness, tobacco, and earth; honey; straw; light caramel and bready malts.

Light but full-flavored, sweet, and incredibly dank on the mid- and back-end. Vague tropical fruits, honey, biscuit and bread, tobacco.

Surprisingly medium bodied, not quite chewy, but still drinkable. No sting, not particularly lively, but not flat either.

Easily the most full-bodied and flavorful "session"-level APA or IPA I've had. I'm not 100% on board with the hop profile, but it gives it a huge, interesting kick, and is well-worth seeking out, especially for fans of Mosaic and Citra hops (of which this beer is reminiscent).

Look: Transparent straw gold with moderate activity and a minimal head.

Smell: Wow! The brew smells so fresh! Getting fresh piney hops, orange zest, slight mango, huge citrusy hops, a slight fresh malt, and more piney hops. I can't over estimate how fresh this beer smells. It's like being right over a fresh batch of homebrew on bottling day. Smells fantastic and should be a new febreeze

Taste: Once again blown away with the freshness. Getting a wave of fresh citrus/piney cascade hops, a hint of nelson like white wine notes that is fantastic, the comes a healthy malt backbone to hold everything together but before it finishes there is a resurgent wave of cascade to give it that last hop punch. Absolutely fantastic.

Mouthfeel: Light to medium bodied and extremely drinkable with no hint of booze. Moderate carbonation.

Overall: Wow! I always expect great things from modern times but this one takes the cake. So fresh and so drinkable this could easily become my new go to when they finally make it a normal line up. This brew is so good I would happily bring this to a beer nerd party to make sure my friends have had it or crush a pack of these by the pool. Only complaint is they made so little! Easily cruises to the top of my all time favorite list and am dying for more! Bravo Modern Times
