A: Poured with an unfiltered haze and a thick fluffy peak of foam.
Perfect beer for spring weather.
S: bready malts, grassy, grape and apple skin
T: lots of fruity yeast character up front. The soft sweet malt character comes through and is very light and lively. A little herbal presence from the hops but not much.
M: crisp mouthfeel from the light body and ample carbonation.
O: the perfect spring weather beer. Light enough warm days but flavorful enough for the cooler evenings.

A: A clear, almost fluorescent, golden yellow.

S: Yeast funk, pepper, white grapes, and a lot of sweetness.

T: The flavor is what you might expect from a pilsener brewed with a Belgian yeast. This is more like a Belgian Golden Ale or a Belgian Strong Pale Ale than a Saison.

M: A bit syrupy.

O: I've liked everything else I've had from Modern Times so far. This is by no means a bad beer but neither my style nor what I was expecting.

16 oz. can poured into a globe glass. The Lomaland pours a clear straw with a rather fleeting cap of foam. Does offer some carbonation for a while to support a thin surface cap but lacks the fullness expected as for retention/lace.

Aroma of light Belgian yeast and some noble hops. Touch of sweet lemony grain especially through a bit of foam after a swirl. Decent aroma but surely lacks any classic saison character. Coriander spice with warming.

Taste follows with a slightly sweet lemon bready character with a good dose of Belgian yeast character. Some spices emerge with warming as the yeast notes diminish. Bit steely overall and undercarbonated. A firmer carbonation via agitation brings forth a spicier delivery. Hmmm.

Feel is pleasant and supportive yet again so-so given the light carbonation. Overall I'm a bit dissaponted here. Surely a 'spiced' saison yet one that is done subtely and with finess vs. the blatant spice of many brewers. Yet the desired yeast funk character is absent. It's hard to mass produce a good saison, and Modern Times doesn't quite pull it off. Alas, they fail less than Coronado or Green Flash for example, who simply crush a base beer with spices.

Back to the drawing board with a Saison Dupont. in hand....

I really like this saison-brew... and not just because its a San Diego based beer.

As advertised, it tastes like a balanced combination of peppercorn and crackers... with a light, airy taste. A moderate ABV makes it sufficiently sessionable (aka crushable). While it has a hazy, light appearance, its very satisfying for the style. Personally, I'm not a big fan of the saison-style; prefer the predictability of Pale Ales, IPAs, lagers, etc.... that said, a fine beer.
