Being an avid homebrewer and having familiarity with the madfermentationist blog, I'd heard about Modern Times and some of the great stuff they were doing so decided to stop in for a pint on a Thursday while on vacation.

Damn.. The tasting room is just my vibe. Huge mosaic on the wall made of post-it notes, interesting artwork all over, the brewery within eye site of the bar itself. I got a flight of the 4 beers that were the same as their packaged lineup. Not a bad one in the bunch! The coffee stout was extremly drinkable and the hoppy beers fresh as sin. Another thing I loved aout the beers was they were relativity session strength (4.8 - 6.7%) so I didn't have to worry too much.

The bartender was friendly and humored my beer nerd questions, I left with a shirt, some stickers and a strong inkling to return. One of the best places I've been in a while for being so new.

I received my first Modern Times beer as a throw in as part of a trade a year ago - been wanting to visit since.

Great place - really cool decor with the book bindings and various mosaics. Thoroughly enjoyed a flight of Black House, Nitro BH, Coconut BH, and Mega BH.

The merch was great - our group left with glassware, beer totes and a really cool hoody.

Lauren was wrong - Modern Times is great and a must-visit if you don't hate beer.

Popular belief has led to the idea that San Diego is too concentrated with breweries, and that these new breweries won't be able to stay in a competitive market. Don't tell that to Modern Times, which is perhaps the best of the "new wave" brewers out of San Diego, and is enjoying a quick start full of success. I was lucky enough to have three Brazilian beer lovers with me during my peek at the tasting room, which is open seven days from 12-9 pm. Parking is limited on the street, so anticipate walking a few blocks on a busy night. Luckily for us, it was a Sunday night.

The tasting room is huge in floor space, and a large bar sits in the middle of it. Regarding décor, 1973 called and wants it back; too many different themes going on, but it felt like it came out of the era where avocado colored appliances were hip. However, the place was clean, as was the bathroom.

One interesting aspect of Modern Times is they not only brew their own beer, they brew their own coffee too. If you enjoy both drinks, stop what you're doing and come now! Three lists of drinks rest behind the bar; the left a handful of cold-pressed coffee options, the middle consisting of their year round list (Lomaland Saison, Fortunate Islands, Black House, Blazing World), and six "special release beers (Funky Lomaland, Pilot Black IPA, e mais). Beers are fairly priced, going from $5-7 a pour, poured in elegant slender tulips. Keeping the beers flowing was a helpful bartender.

Still young and already a celebrity, the sky is the limit for Modern Times.

The place is in a quiet corner of the sports arena area of Point Loma. Nothing around so there was plenty of parking. Not many people inside, plenty of room at the bar (which was nice because we went there because Societe was super crowded).
Place was super clean, modern feeling. Kind of a cold atmosphere, maybe because it was so empty.
The selection was good but all the stouts happened to be of the coffee variety which I'm not a huge fan of. I had a pale ale which was quite good however.
Service was friendly, prices were reasonable.

Definitely a place I would go back to.

Nice big warehouse, interesting décor, (I love Michael Jackson tribute done with post-its!). Serves flights in old cigar boxes. No food, but has a funny water dispenser with a "Coors Light" sign over it. Clever!

what a great spot!
A highlight of my recent San Diego trip.
Relaxed, warehouse tasting room with very cool decor and great beer.

Service was exceptionally friendly and helpful, prices were reasonable, and all 9 available beers were awesome.

They will fill screw top type 64 oz growlers, as long as any other brewery's logo is completely covered.

If I lived nearby, this would be my go-to spot.

Place is huge, super cool atmosphere, wouldn't mind moving into this place. The beers have just been okay so far for me, but what do I know? Worth checking out though.

Such a great spot. Very cool use of the space. Some neat art and a nice vibe that matches their brand well.

The logo is gorgeous as well as the cans. Eager to see these in Portland soon!

Staff were super friendly, laid back, but attentive. Place was hopping on a Saturday night. A great time for all. Good crowd.

Just checked this place out on Sunday 11/24 which happened to be my birthday.

Atmosphere - The tasting room is very cool especially the large mural on the wall of Jacko and his monkey bubbles. The mural is made out of all post-it notes which I thought was really cool. It was a bit cold in there and the bartender admitted they need space heaters and they were looking into getting some soon. They also have book shelves with many leather bound books :P But seriously they did have book shelves with books to read and also with their merchandise such as shirts, hoodies and trading cards of their employees which was very unique.

Quality - The 4 core beers that they already can were all very good. The Black House Stout and Blazing World were my favorite and the Fortunate Islands was very good as well. The Black House Stout has a very nice coffee roastiness and is very flavorful. The Blazing World Amber is really just masquerading as an Amber and is really just a tasty IPA. Reminds my of Nelson from Alpine which makes sense seeing how it's made with Nelson Sauvin hops. Loved this one. The Fortunate Islands is pegged as a Hoppy & Citrusey wheat and that it is. It could be classified as an American Pale Wheat and actually reminds me of an IPA as well more specifically Lagunitas IPA. The Saison called Lomaland was nice. They also had a 100 % Brett IPA which was very interesting and tropical with a strong pineapple notes. Good stuff.

Service - The bar tender was friendly and even talked to us about the beers they currently had aging in barrels. One of them was a Flemish Red and the other was a sour but I couldn't remember much more about that one. The service was fairly prompt.

Selection - They had 7 beers on tap so pretty good selection.

Food - They have food trucks on certain days and times.

Value - Tasters were 2.50 a piece and the the taster glasses were at least 4.5 ounces so very big for a taster so good value there.

Overall I really liked this brewery and I see them doing big things in the future. Their regular offerings which are now canned were very good. Aside from those the Wet Hop IPA was just average and the DIPA they had just tapped a couple days before called Lost Horizon was pretty disappointing. It was less hoppy than the Fortunate Islands and Blazing World. Still though I really enjoyed the experience and recommended this brewery for sure.

Headed down here after the Pacific Islander Festival.

It's like a lot of other San Diego taprooms - huge industrial layout, bar in the middle, some views of the brewery equipment, etc. Their design is flawless, in my opinion. I really like the look of their logo, the cans and the quirks of the taproom (books, old TVs, microscopes, post-it mural, comic book pages on the wall).

The beers are good. The ones I didn't care for were still high quality beers, just interesting interpretations of styles that didn't quite fit me (the hoppy wheat and the hoppy amber). I think the stout is the star, here. The saison is tasty, but a little light (and the one-off hibiscus version was way tastier). They certainly deliver on what I read on their website: with slightly lower ABV averages than your other San Diego envelope-pushing beers, they really focus and deliver on aroma. All of the core 4 beers smell great.

Parking was not the greatest, but the streets weren't busy enough for it to matter, and I don't think there was a food truck nearby (strange for a Saturday, but maybe they are setting things up logistically, still).

Super excited for the cans to hit the market. I'll definitely toss the Black House Stout in the fridge.

Modern Times resides in an large warehouse in an industrial area near the freeway onramp in Point Loma San Diego. It was easy to find but hard to get to with all the one way streets leading you in a never ending maze. I recommend riding your bike there. With no sign it was not hard to miss with the open wall bar over looking 2 iron bath tubs full of native succulents. Inside it is spacious with a large bar looking to be held up by many hardcover books, surrounded by steel barrels as tables. One wall is covered in comic book pages with their logo carefully cut out with yellow paint behind it. The only thing separating you and the brewery is the bar and some book shelves. You can see the newly filled barrels lining up for aging. They have something like 15 taps and a cask pump, a counter pressure growler filler (2 of them actually) and some excellently hopped beers! You can bring your own food, read their books and enjoy a few ales. I loved their Hoppy Red, both IPAs on tap, and the coconut, cocoa nibs coffee stout. The typewriters and old books were a bit to hip for my taste, but the taste of the beers and everything else about this place will keep me coming back. Plus, i heard something about them being into the cycle community, I can support that! I mean, i already do with New Belgium, and i don't even care for most of their beers!!!

Great job MT!

I've been liking the Modern Times beers a lot when they show up on draft, so I didn't want to miss the opening of their tasting room. They say they will be open 12 pm to 9 pm every day. If you can find the Sports Arena, it's just to the northeast on a street you never knew was there.

They had ten taps going, and probably they have room for a few more. The mix of styles is quite interesting, and they don't like to just go with the standard generic reds, blacks, and blondes. Even the Pale Ale has Nelson Sauvin hops, and they call their really hoppy beer (Blazing World) an Amber rather than an IPA. Two Saisons in the mix as well. Nice pint tulips to drink out of. Both 32 oz and 64 oz growlers are sold.

The place is enormous, with high ceilings, bare everything. It's almost, but not quite as big as Mission. The brewing area in the back is vast, with room to expand about six times beyond their substantial start-up plant. In front is big, plain bar area that wraps around the serving station. The rest of the drinking area just has a few scattered tables and kegs. The gigantic mosaic-like mural is the one decoration. Service was right there, even with the crowd.

The location is actually way more convenient for San Diego-dwellers than the other industrial park breweries out on the distant mesas. You could even walk the several blocks here from the Old Town trolley and train station. Just look for the strip joints on Rosecrans.
