I've been liking the Modern Times beers a lot when they show up on draft, so I didn't want to miss the opening of their tasting room. They say they will be open 12 pm to 9 pm every day. If you can find the Sports Arena, it's just to the northeast on a street you never knew was there.
They had ten taps going, and probably they have room for a few more. The mix of styles is quite interesting, and they don't like to just go with the standard generic reds, blacks, and blondes. Even the Pale Ale has Nelson Sauvin hops, and they call their really hoppy beer (Blazing World) an Amber rather than an IPA. Two Saisons in the mix as well. Nice pint tulips to drink out of. Both 32 oz and 64 oz growlers are sold.
The place is enormous, with high ceilings, bare everything. It's almost, but not quite as big as Mission. The brewing area in the back is vast, with room to expand about six times beyond their substantial start-up plant. In front is big, plain bar area that wraps around the serving station. The rest of the drinking area just has a few scattered tables and kegs. The gigantic mosaic-like mural is the one decoration. Service was right there, even with the crowd.
The location is actually way more convenient for San Diego-dwellers than the other industrial park breweries out on the distant mesas. You could even walk the several blocks here from the Old Town trolley and train station. Just look for the strip joints on Rosecrans.

Popular belief has led to the idea that San Diego is too concentrated with breweries, and that these new breweries won't be able to stay in a competitive market. Don't tell that to Modern Times, which is perhaps the best of the "new wave" brewers out of San Diego, and is enjoying a quick start full of success. I was lucky enough to have three Brazilian beer lovers with me during my peek at the tasting room, which is open seven days from 12-9 pm. Parking is limited on the street, so anticipate walking a few blocks on a busy night. Luckily for us, it was a Sunday night.
The tasting room is huge in floor space, and a large bar sits in the middle of it. Regarding décor, 1973 called and wants it back; too many different themes going on, but it felt like it came out of the era where avocado colored appliances were hip. However, the place was clean, as was the bathroom.
One interesting aspect of Modern Times is they not only brew their own beer, they brew their own coffee too. If you enjoy both drinks, stop what you're doing and come now! Three lists of drinks rest behind the bar; the left a handful of cold-pressed coffee options, the middle consisting of their year round list (Lomaland Saison, Fortunate Islands, Black House, Blazing World), and six "special release beers (Funky Lomaland, Pilot Black IPA, e mais). Beers are fairly priced, going from $5-7 a pour, poured in elegant slender tulips. Keeping the beers flowing was a helpful bartender.
Still young and already a celebrity, the sky is the limit for Modern Times.
