Beck's Sapphire (2014) - 6% ABV. Pours with a thick head that dissipates to decent lacing. Red amber hue. Decent carbonation. Light mouthfeel. Wet. Very malty and sweet on the front palate. More of an Oktoberfest or Markzen style beer. Lots of barley, bread, and wheat. Smooth syrup sugar-- caramel. Mid-palate there is just a quick hint of hops. A slight alcohol bite. Rolls back to malt, syrup, and wheat. Slight alcohol and maple syrup after taste. Very light taste. Drinkable. Hiding in its ABV. Extremely smooth. I think the problem is that you expect more from the Sapphire hops as you should-- it's a good German beer, but if you're looking for bite you will be disappointed. It is a good beer-- but it isn't hoppy. It's malt and creamy. Had they labeled it Marzen it would be more well received, but it is what it is as they say. 3.5. Good.

Clear gold with a small white head.

Smell is clean toasted grain and hay with some black pepper spiciness. Noble hop scent it smells similar to Saaz with pepper added.

Starts out toasted grain with a distinct lemon flavor. Slightly spicy tastes like Becks with a lemon slice. Powdery yeast flavor it is OK and better than the regular Becks.

Mouthfeel is OK.

Overall a tasty beer but nothing really different. Will be an excellent hot weather beer.

Type: 12-oz. bottle
Glass: Pilsner glass
From: Cherokee Market Beer & Wine in Normal Heights (San Diego), Calif.
Price: $8.99 for a 6-pack
Purchased: Oct. 25, 2013
Consumed: Oct. 25, 2013
Misc.: Pretty nice looking black bottle

Poured a honey golden clear color with 3-to-4 fingers of frothy white head. Tons of bubbles coming up from the bottom. Sporadic spots of foggy lacing along the sides of the glass on the way down. Good retention for a pilsner on the top.

Smelled cloves, banana, honey, faint Circus Peanuts, bread, banana bread, caramel, apple, faint pumpkin and kiwi. More like a hefeweizen or something similar than a pilsner, but I did dig it.

Tasted not as much like the smell as I’d hoped. Got honey, bread, apple, kiwi, caramel, banana bread and some cloves.

Light body. Thin texture. Average-to-lively carbonation. Abrupt, refreshing finish. Does not feel like 6.00 percent ABV, maybe more like 4.80.

I was pleasantly surprised with Beck’s Sapphire. Not too bad at all and I’ll certainly enjoy the rest of this 6-pack.

12oz bottle poured into a pilsner glass.

A: Straw gold color. Excellent clarity. Two fingers of white head settle far too quickly. Thin, delicate rings of lacing are left on the glass.

S: Doughy and bready malt base, faint grape-skin fruitiness, Modest grassy hop character with a touch of herbs and a whisper of perfumey lavender.

T: Thin dough and biscuit malt tastes, bready. Touch of grape skin. Hop bitterness is very restrained, but it does build a bit toward the back end. Softly grassy, very light herbal edge, and a floral lavender quality. Touch of spice. Subdued finish of doughy malt and fading hop bitterness.

M: Light to medium in body. Sits in the mouth with just a little more perceived weight than is normal for the style. This is probably because the carbonation flattens out of the beer rather quickly. Somewhat firm, creamy, and maybe even a touch chewy.

O: I have to say, it isn't completely terrible. Very much in the pilsner vein of things, just a little too safe and restrained. If you're going to feature the sapphire hop as the main marketing point of the beer, I would think you'd want to go a little bigger and bolder with the hop profile. Getting away from the green bottle has done wonders for this beer too, I'm sure. No skunk taste here.

Clear gold with a two finger head that leaves quickly leaving a few splatters of lace.
Smell is malty with a bit of grassy hops.
Taste is sweet malts with a touch of herbal grassy hops.
Mouthfel is light to medium with adequete carbonation. Finishes lightly sweet with a almost no hop bitterness.
Overall a German malt liquor.
Too sweet not enough hop presence.
The German answer to Bud Light Platinum or Miller Fortune. Why bother?

The sapphire from Beck's is a smoother version of Beck's regular. The beer pors a golden clear with fuzzy white head that settles quick and does not leave a lace. The smell is very tame, basically nondescript. The taste was a smooth well balanced pilsner. The sapphire hops do not have the same grassy boldness of saaz hops. The mouthfeel was medium body with good carbonation. Overall it is a very nice smooth pilsner.

From the 12 fl. oz. bottle. There is a number on the label that reads 12363-SX23. US Brewed. Tried on January 27, 2013.

It pours a deeper golden yellow than some lagers with a foamy white head that builds up and fizzles down to a ring. But the ring remains.

Aroma of subdued malts, bread, yeast, and a slight hop zing. Overall about what one would expect for this style.

The body is light to medium but generally smooth.

The taste begins with the bready malts but it does not take long for the clean, crisp sapphire hops to kick in on the tail end. Not much of a lingerer. Fairly easy to drink.

In some respects I would liken this to a slightly bolder Bud Light Platinum.

This is one of the smoothest lagers on the market. No extremely flavors or alcohol content so many will under score this brew. its not imported, thats good news for us beers because this brew is equal to or better than stella. If your looking for an extremely smooth lager this is a fine choice.

The color and clarity are good, enjoyed chilled in a tulip, deep gold with thin head of white which leaves copius lace and beading is fine and retention is good. Smell is faintly mineral with grainy and light floral scent with a mild sweet tinge. The feel is somewhat creamy with mild dry feel and light bitterness with subtle spice in the finish.
Taste is decent with floral hop and light pilsner sweetness with low alcohol and hop bitterness adding to the smooth malt taste. Overall a decent lager but it didn't stand out among the style and pretty tame it could provide more of a hop taste considering it has the variety listed on the label.
