The day I was there, this brew was served w/ minimal head that had an almost blueish tint. The ale was a dark amber.
Although it was served warmer than is typical, the aroma was minimal, faintly grassy.
The flavor was a medium bouquet of floral hops with flavor notes of honey and juniper berries.
The mouthfeel was zingy and not bad.
The drinkability was fine, but the ale fell below expectations. Why "Shanghai" IPA? If it was hopped to survive a boat-trip past India all the way to China, then there wasn't enough. Perhaps its name reflects the location of the SF Brewing Company, close to SF's China Town. It was a mystery. Nonetheless, two glasses of this IPA went down just fine and complemented the good food.

Sampled at the San Frnacisco Brewing Company on 1/25/09, reviewed from notes, color is a golden orange that is a little on the yellow side, 3/4 inch creamy white head that leaves some lace but does not have very good retention, aroma has some sweeter malts, light hops, hint of grapefruit, and some floral accents, taste is quite sweet for an English IPA even, there is a weird herbal aftertaste as well, expected a big dry finish after talking to the bartender about it but certainly did not get one, mouthfeel is pretty thin, slightly chewy, sweet, and barely dry, too much carbonation, taste does not linger, could have a few glasses but a little heavy for its style, needs more hoppiness for balance, they make a big deal about how much hops this has in it but they seemed to be missing to me, not even on the hoppier side for an English IPA, might be worth trying compared to their other brews

Medium amber color with some lacing and very bright hoppy smell and taste. Flavor is decent overall, but too much hops for the malt used for my liking leaving it a bit unbalanced, and I didn't even finish the sampler. A little thin for the style, and nothing to go out of the way for.

this was a not so fantastic ipa, although it was not bad, it was lacking that pop, not sure what it was, this place was great, and I sure every batch of this ipa is a little different, I can see coming in another month and this being my favorite ipa of all time, just not this time.

Pint at the brewpub. This is a nice, well-balanced IPA, which I could drink all night. Amber coloured, with a quickly dissipating white head that did leave a touch of lace. Solid, but far from spectacular. Typical IPA nose of C-hops and caramel malt, but with the added bonus of some herbal notes. Lots of grapefruit in a fairly straightforward flavour, along with some sweet caramel malts and berries. Body is perhaps a tad too thin, but its certainly very drinkable. I think this one may be underrated, and worth a try.

Pours a nice golden color, but little head. Lots of very beautiful lacing though. Traditional IPA aroma, good but not grand, nothing much more to say. Taste was a good balance of hop and malt, but comes off more hoppy. Pretty smooth and fresh, with a crisp spring to it, though lightly carbonated, and a slight bitter finish. Overall, pretty good beer, ok IPA, a good session beer.

Reviewed from notes taken on 3/5/06 at the brewpub.

Pours a clear, light amber with no head. Light lacing on the glass.

Has an unusually slightly sweet malt aroma along with a layer of citrusy hops.

Taste is sweet and slightly malty upfront. Leads into a fairly mild citrusy hop flavor. Finishes slightly sweet. It's OK, but where the hell are the IBUs?

Medium body, low carbonation.

This is an overly average IPA. The sweetness is out of place for this style.

Tap@San Francisco Brewery Pub. I guess its named for its closeness to Chinatown or something. Pretty bad IPA, Lemon/orange tang, mild bitterness, nothing you’d write home about. But it was probably one of their better beers, surprisingly enough. Pretty boring.
