On tap at Fifty Seven Degrees. Golden amber in the pint shaker. Decent head and plenty of carbonation. One sip and you think, "oh, a tasty hoppy Pale Ale." Then the long bitterness hits you and makes you want to take another gulp. However, the bitterness just increases in intensity.

This is just so light bodied, it's more like hop water, missing the malt. Not much aroma, despite all the hops. A bitter pill to swallow, but the hop afficianados will want to try this one. It's a taste your tongue will never forget. I am hoping this brewery has other abilities besides the heavy hand with the hops.

Poured from Hydro Flask into a snifter.

A: The beer appears a lustrous yellow gold with very good clarity. The head is an inch of thick white froth that leaves scattered lacing on the glass.

S: A snifter does this beer great credit compared to the taster glass at the brewery. The nose is redolent of tangerine, orange, and grapefruit, with notes of mango, papaya, and guava. There's a touch of spiciness in there with a bit of white grape. For me, the aroma is all hops with no malt influence. Hop luminosity abounds.

T: The beer provides an impressive amount of hop flavor with a smooth, upper medium level of bitterness. Notes of orange flesh and pith blend with honeydew melon, mango, and pineapple. Malt is there but the beer is really quite dry with just a little saltine cracker-like character. The beer finishes dry and hoppy with a firm, lingering pithy bitterness. The description of this beer on Benchmark's website says it has a firm malt backbone and is not focused on bitterness. It actually is quite dry and devoid of malt character, and though it does have a good deal of hop flavor, it is also pretty bitter when coupled with the dryness so I wouldn't say it's not completely unfocused on bitterness. I mean, bitterness may not be the intended focus but it's decently better.

M: The body is lower medium with upper medium carbonation. The mouthfeel is dry and sticky.

Overall: This is very impressive and highly recommended. I can't believe how good this is, especially for a first batch. It's clean, hoppy, dry, and expertly brewed. I guess with the 5ish% ABV it's more like a hoppy Pale Ale, but I'll be damned if I could tell you that without knowing the ABV. I'm not normally one to want much sweetness in a hoppy beer, but here I think a little of it would augment the drinkability and offset some of the bitterness and dryness, but I might be nitpicking. Anyway, they fill blank screwtop growlers so go get a fill of this.
