My in laws live in Alexandria, VA and I visited them this past weekend with hopes of finding some brews there that I could not find back home at my local Total Wine. First off, this store is in the worst designed shopping center in VA and is crazy just to get in and out. The store is quite large and much bigger than the two Total Wines by me in Hampton Roads. I was not too impressed with the selection as I was only able to find 1 beer that I couldn't find back home. I did notice too that they had limitations on certain brews that they did not have limitations on near me which I found interesting. Overall, I would go back, but I'm interested in finding another craft beer store next time I'm near my in laws! (715 characters)

Location: in Alexandria, VA - one of only a few decent places to buy craft beer at a reasonable price.
- the traffic pattern and the parking lot is poorly designed and the flow of traffic is terrible - you may be able to enter the lot, but prepare yourself, as leaving is a real challenge

The Store: Great selection of wines, liquor and of course craft beers and imported beers. Large selection of multi packs, singles (mix a six) and seasonal releases. Great import section.
- bar with samples and with good rotating menu of beers. They wash and fill growlers for a reasonable price.

Overall: great place (for the Alexandria region), reasonable prices and great selection. (680 characters)

This is my local craft brew shop, and imports, and...well, anything beer. The selection is phenomenal, I'm going to make a wild guess and say 750+ regularly stocked, with seasonal and special issues rotating in continually. The management and employees are helpful, and ALWAYS friendly, though knowledge is hit or miss (more hit, though). At 2 miles from my house, this is worth the drive past the places that are much closer with a fraction of the selection that appears programmed by a distributor. Clearly TW chooses their stock on the basis of a beer knowledge. The atmosphere of the place is all warehouse...but if you a re in TW, you aren't there for the ambience.

Note on food, occasionally they do cheese and meat samples, never had any, but the stuff they do stock is nice comfort items to go with wine and craft beer. Small selection on these items, but that's not really their business, either, so they get a 5 rating on the beer selection. (952 characters)

This is the place in my neighborhood when I go to get beers (and wine too!!). Their beer selection is big, nice and they get in some rare beers every once in a while (KBS, 120 min IPA, etc.). They do a first come first served basis on their rare beers and reserve them to some super limited quantities. The overall beer selection is fantastic (hence the 5 rating). The store has dedicated two whole isles and most of the front displays in the store to beer.

If you like wine, the selection is HUGE! They mostly stock the newer stuff, but some older vintages can be found.

The store has wine tastings and some beer events on the weekends that are worth checking out.

My kind of neighborhood store! (700 characters)

Atmosphere: Typical Total Wine store, but a bit larger and well stocked than most. Alcoholic grocery store.

Quality: In addition to the standard fare (which this place pretty much carries it all), I've seen the occasional gem. For instance, I came here the week Black Ops was released and I applaud them for even putting it out on the shelf. Most places would keep it in the back as some sort of secret stash meant for the "privileged" and/or employees only. Also, they usually carry reams of Sculpin every time a batch gets released.

Service: Like most TWs, the employees run the gamut from craft beer lover, to the weekend Bud drinker. This model applies to this store as well.

Selection: Overall, I really like the selection here. The new releases/most popular brews are displayed near the front of the store, and on some island-style shelves displayed near the front.... and there are a lot of them!

Value: Whenever I hit this area, before going to Ricks and Whole foods, I usually go here first to see if they have what I want first due to their reasonable prices.

This is my favorite Total Wine on the NOVA side of the DC area. (1,139 characters)

as far as atmosphere is concerned, well, it's a Total Wine, so they've got that whole sterile grocery store vibe nailed

selection is deep even for the chain, with a whole full-length aisle devoted only to singles, arranged by style, if something is distributed here there's a good chance of locating it at this store...

...and with such a large selection comes the chance that you'll pick up something out-of-date, a problem that seems to run within the chain, lots of light exposure, quality can be a crapshoot

service doesn't exist unless you ask for it, which is typical for the chain - as I wasn't approached and did not need it, I can't comment on the knowledge available at this particular store (704 characters)

My go-to beer store right here! This is a great stop here because they have a massive selection of singles from various states. On the other hand they did not seem to carry any exceptionally rare releases, but they do from time to time. You just need to stop by or call often to see when the releases come out (e.g., HopSlam). The wall of singles not only provided a chance to pick up beers from places like Saranac, Legacy, New England Brewing, Cape Ann and Legend but the prices are perfect anywhere between $1.49 and $2.99. This place gives you enough options to fill each evening if you do not want to pay the mark-up at more specialized beer stores. This place is stocked to the walls with wine and offers a wonderful collection of Virginia / local wines - perfect place for me and my wife! Cheers (keep the coupons coming)! (829 characters)

I have been to this place quite a few times since relocating to the northern VA region. Since coming here, this has turned into my go-to craft beer to-go spot.
If Im gonna go to Total Wine (Alexandria) I usually go when I have nothing to do, because I will literally do laps around the beer isles picking up bottles and reading labels. The selection is fantastic. Especially for American craft brews. Other beer mecca's are represented well (Germany, Belgium, etc.) and even other countries (I remember seeing a decent amount of Asian brews, but not like the American craft section. You can buy cases, sixers, build your own, or just buy singles. Over the last few months I have started to collect/cellar and this is where Im sucked in. They will usually have a few finds and things that are worth setting aside. It is actually really hard for me to go into the store and not leave without spending at least $50.
I haven't had much experience with the staff seeing that I usually don't need any assistance, but there was one occurrence where I called another local (Total Wine Chantilly) and the salesman went and checked the store to see if what I was looking for was in stock. I know this is for a different location, but I am sure they would have done the same at this store. EDIT: Have started going Friday evenings and there is one employee that is very knowledgeable about beer and will help the amateur craft beer drinker or the seasoned pro.
Highly recommend checking this place out if you are looking for a solid selection at reasonable prices. (1,556 characters)

My new go-to beer stop, this is a great place to have in the neighborhood...particularly with reasonable prices.

Overall this place has a great selection of beers, lots of stuff you cant find in the area for a reasonable price. Best part is the diversity of sixers, big bottles and singles - a great place to do a pick six with regular rotations. Lacks significant amounts of local brews, and unfortunately needs a bit more diversity in its belgian selection, while the rest of Europe is reasonable well represented. Staff is incredibly friendly, if just not knowledgeable, which you kind of expect in a wine superstore.

If you are in the area, check out a Total Wines, you will leave with a great haul... (707 characters)

Total Wine is one of the better places in the DC area to get quality craft beer. The service is non-existent, but they have a ton of Belgian Beer and US Craft Beers. You'll be fine if you have an idea of what you're looking for. In addition to a bunch of 4 and 6 packs (in belgian and US craft beers) Total Wine has A TON of American craft brew singles. You might not be able to find super exclusive beers here, but they have a really good selection of most things, at a pretty good price. Definitely check out Total Wine in Alexandria if you're in the DC area. (561 characters)

Great thing about the store is that it contains a large selection, but much of that is from beers of the East coast area. Really obscured micros are hard to find, but there are some real diamonds to be found here.

However, it's a giant warehouse and it can hold a lot. Staff assistance is non existent very much Wal Mart like, however if you do run in to a staff member I am sure they will help you out (although I've never had to rely on this while visiting).

This also one of the few areas were you can get singles and an abundant choice of them. That is a huge plus. Also the singles are very nicely organized starting with foreign which are grouped also by style, and then the craft beer section which is grouped nicely by style also, Pale Ales, Stouts, Imperial Stouts, IPA, Double IPAs and so forth. This makes it much easier to find what you are looking for.

Prices are fairly reasonable, although if you want something obscure chances are it isn't going to be here, particularly if it's not made near the region (East Coast). (1,036 characters)

I finally feel compelled to write a review for this place. And I will freely admit these are through out of state eyes where our local offerings are lacking.

I've walked to this Total Wine several times from the Hilton Mark Center while visiting DC on work. I am always outright amazed at the selection at this place. It is on par, and exceeds with regional flair, places like Binnys of Chicago, South Bay Drugs of San Diego, and Total Beverage of Denver.

Basically every beer distributed in the region. I particularly like it for the DFH, Victory, Weyerbacher, and Brooklyn selection. I am slightly annoyed that I live closer to Oskar Blues than Total Wine, but I still can't buy their products, but that is another story.

Service is good. Friendly - bit grocery store like. (779 characters)

The Alexandria Total Wine is, in my opinion, the best one that I have been to in this area (I've also been to Fairfax and Springfield). The selection here is large, but not incredible. They have lots of singles, 4- and 6-packs, and 750/bombers. A lot of beer but you won't find much in the way of rare or limited release beers. They have a set of shelves near the checkout to display all of the top rated beers, which is nice for someone who doesn't know the best beers, but was useless for someone like me.

I've found the service here to be better than other Total Wines or other large chain stores. If I'm not approached as soon as I walk in the door, an associate or even the manager will typically come by and see if I need anything in particular. They are typically more or less knowledgeable about the beer selection.

The quality here and at all the Total Wines is what you need to be leery of in my experience. A lot of beers, particularly the singles are well past their prime and not taken off the shelves. Always check for dates before buying anything and if there is no date, think twice if it is a "best when fresh" beer like an IPA. (1,147 characters)

Stopped here twice while in town visiting a friend. Very large store with a good amount of space devoted to beer. Basically I'd characterize the selection as everything I'd expect to find and nothing I wouldn't, meaning that it was a very solid selection of crafts and imports but had little in the way of limited release or even local stuff (excepting Dominion). They did, however, sell singles which is a big plus, and had a decent amount of stuff in the cooler. I didn't seek out help but help didn't seek me out either, and if I had to guess I would imagine that the level of craft beer knowledge among the majority of staff is probably mediocre at best. Prices were reasonable, and you certainly could do worse elsewhere in terms of selection. (748 characters)

Total wine was the closest beer store to were I was staying. Once you walk past the 10 rows of wine you get to all the beer and there is a ton of beer. 1 wall just for micro/craft, 1 for singles, and 2 for BMC like stuff. The only place I could find Third Coast Old ale and Southern Tier Unearthly and was pretty cheap for what I saw in most of the area. Yet another stop when I come back into town.

I essentially got no service and only saw a hand full of employees even walking around. Check out was pretty easy and painless. Overall just like most large chain stores. (571 characters)
