330 ml bottle poured into a footed Belgian tulip
Cloudy pale gold with 3 fingers of pillowy white head that slowly recedes to a persistent cap with lots of sticky lacing. Aroma is full of pale malts, citrus peel, and spicy yeast esters. A little bit of clove and grassy funk in the background.
The taste follows the smell pretty closely. Bright citrus--mostly lemon--leads the way. The white peppery spice and earthy grains follow, while the pale malts lend support throughout. Just a hint of herbal bitterness at the end. The texture is near perfection as far as I'm concerned. Starts off feeling medium with an ever-so-slight sticky feeling. The lively carbonation provides a crisp, mildly prickly, refreshing zing, and it finishes very dry and clean.
These gnomes know what they're doing. It's been a while since I had the Houblon Chouffe, but this seems pretty similar, which is a good thing. This is simply one of the best Belgian Pale Ales I've had.
