From my tasting notes: The La Chouffe was a strong Golden Ale in the vein of Duvel that came with a fluffy white head and plenty of belgian yeast notes in the aroma. This was a great tasting beer that was herbal and spicy while being very well balanced and highly drinkable. This is their flagship beer and it was very tasty. Definitely one to revisit.

Had this one last week at a small restaurant in Amsterdam Oost. Originally thought that this was a mass market Belgian Pale Ale, however I was glad to find out that I was wrong.

Strong floral scent, but not overwhelming. Cloudy appearance, served chilled but not to cold.

First sip had a complex set of strong flavors. Floral notes definitely associated with a strong hoppy burst, slightly balanced by a citrus/earthy flavor. Had some other tastes in there I couldn't pick out - primarily because they didn't last long.

A little bit of a alcohol flavor just before it finished with a smooth, dry tart taste. Nice balance from start to finish.

Carbonation was good, kept it refreshing. Had it with a shrimp pasta dish that complimented the complex tastes very well.

Very happy I tried this one - definitely a beer I would have again.

On tap at The Lab Brewing Company in Agoura Hills, CA.

Pours a slightly hazy honey orange with a white head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Foamy rings of lace form on the glass on the drink down. Smell is of grain, fruits, spices, yeast, and some slight banana aromas. Taste is the same with a nice spice finish. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a good beer that is tasty and easy to drink.

Poured into a small glass.

A - Poured slightly hazy golden color with medium head that slowly dissipated leaving average amount of lacing around the glass.

S - Bready yeast, spices and earthy scents dominate with faint fruity and floral scents.

T - Slightly sweet with dominating yeast and spicy flavors. Flavor becomes citrusy and fruity towards a slightly bitter finish.

M - Medium bodied with high carbonation.

O - Very good BSPA that I would highly recommend.

One of my favorite beers when I see it on tap and know I won't be disappointed

It's a phenomenal belgian pale. Definitely strong on the mouth, but not overwhelming. you can have more than one. The nose is very floral, reminds me of honey and flowers and tastes just as good.

It looks like a light golden, slightly clouded ale, and keeps a strong head.

Fairly rich but sprightly on the tongue. Mellow malt is pleasant but the overall effect is quite sharp. Modest head on the golden grew. Some chewy, grainly taste along with the Belgian flavors. Yeasty hint and a slight bitterness. Hard to find fault, it's not too sweet nor overly bitter. Lacks some of the interesting spice and complexity of other Belgian light ales.

On tap at the Encinitas Ale House.

Cloudy golden ale with solid white head. Beautiful looking thick ale.

Great aroma of spice and light malts with a lot of yeast. Farm, hay, pepper, cloves/anise.

Taste is a lot like the smell. It's creamy and refreshing. Light. It has hints of citrus and good spice but not a lot of either. Just enough to accent and enrich the golden ale.

Very creamy. Rich and complex flavor that doesn't add up with the abv.

If you know 'the new Chouffe' (Dobbelen Triple Houblon Chouffe), tasting the 'old' regular La Chouffe is a disappointment

L: glass and top are very inviting; colour has a bit orange in it;
S: a faint smell of the Houblon Chouffe, a bit organge;
T: here comes the disappointment: it doesn't have a real body; where is the hop? The orange still can be tasted, but what else? I don't know. But clear is: it doesn't impress. A weak taste, without bitterness.
M: the carbonation is ok, but no more than that.
O: a disappointment; I have promised myself never be trapped again by the look of the little hobbit - unless it is the great Houblon Chouffe.

Drank this really good Belgian strong ale at Sapsuckers in Huntington, NY. They served this ale in a brandy snifter glass with a nice creamy white head and a slightly hazy golden color.  It has notes of raisins, caramel, and spices on the nose.  Once it hits the mouth the creamy tastes of raisins, and plums leave a clean finish.

Had this on tap at the Sugarbowl in Edmonton. It was a transcendental experience. Let me share it with you.

A - the pint pour was a cloudy, yellow with a very fluffy head that left a lot of chunky lacing on the glass.

S - lovely combination of yeast and floral elements. Nice and intense.

T - some nice initial bitterness that melted into a smooth, yeasty floral finish that lasted for minutes at the back of the throat.

M - this may be the high point of this beer: it was smooth and velvety with some mild carbonation that really coats the mouth. Slight hint of alcohol warmth.

D - very drinkable; after putting down 2 pints I wanted more and more, though that would have been exceptionally dangerous.

This is a great all-weather beer. Quenching enough to be nice on a patio, but hearty enough to hold up to cooler weather. An amazing all-rounder! Couldn't recommend this more: if you see it drink it!

A - Poured into a tulip glass. Golden to bronze color that pours a high white foam that reminds me of lemon meringue. Laces the glass beautifully.

S - Scents of clove and pepper, with a bit of fruit (pear).

T - Has a pleasant spicy first sip that transitions to a fruity sweetness. Finishes with a hearty yeast potency. The flavors come off as robust.

M - Medium bodied, masks the ABV well, and is fairly gentle on the palate.

O - Surprised it took this long for me to try, but this is a very enjoyable belgian pale. Worth seeking out.

Had on tap at Vol de Nuit in New York City. Served in a La Chouffe signature glass. Review from notes.

Look: bright, golden body with a slight haze, thick white head, decent lacing, generally looks good.

Smell: fruity, some Belgian spicy esters, a little mustiness. Simple but good.

Taste: follows the nose with a dry, light malt taste with Belgian yeast, and some spiciness. Almost tastes like a lighter tripel. Good.

Feel: light bodied, alcohol is well hidden, nicely carbonated, good. Easy drinking but I tried to take my time with it anyway.

Overall: a pretty good strong blonde ale, which is a style I'm not a big fan of generally. Its worth trying. Cheers!

On-tap at the Brick Store Pub. Pours a very hazy orange with a creamy head that lingers and leaves some nice lacing. Smells of banana and cloves, candi sugar, and some firm malt. Fairly classic aromas, but nothing mindblowing. Tastes sharp and a little bit sweet up front, then slightly grainy, and quite spicy on the finish. Not very well integrated, so the flavors don't meld seamlessly like they do in the best strong Belgian style beers. Fairly creamy in the mouth, but with a sharpness on the fore palate. Pleasant enough, but there are so many other choices I'd probably head to first.

Have had this in a bottle before and this was my first experience on tap.

A: Hazy deep yellow color. Huge three finger head (third glass from freshly tapped barrel) that stuck around and left considerable lacing all the way through.

S: Attractive. Spicy, belgian yeast, fruity with good hop smell.

T: Follows the nose but is more memorable. Starts sweet and then follows with spicy bannana, touch of pear and a slightly bitter finish.

M: Average feel with medium carbonation. Slight warming.

O: This was a great experience, I much prefered this on tap vs bottle. Very well done belgian strong pale, would order again.

Poured a nice golden wheat with a slight head.

It smelled of spice and wheat.

The taste was fantastic. You go into this thinking you're getting something similar to Duvel but they really are different kinds of beer. You catch the fruitiness up front and then it's like a floral explosion finishing with a spicy slightly bitterness.

The mouthfeel is great an not overly heavy or carbonated.

Overall a fantastic beer. Cakman2 has talked this up to me for weeks and I'm glad I finally got to try it. I'm picking up a bottle next week.

I had this beer on-tap at Venti's in Salem, OR.

-pale greenish-gold, thickly translucent
-only a small, spotty head
-spiced aroma, with coriander, slight orange/citrus in both smell and taste
-lightly carbonated, not much bite, a bit creamy mouthfeel
-potent coriander spiced taste that remains on the tongue for a long time after swallowing

This seems like a good example of a Belgian Strong. It didn't really surprise me at all with its taste.

Served on tap at the World of Beer outside Tampa Palms, FL.

Pours cloudy hazy pale yellow; good helping of white foam.

Wheaty/Belgian smell.

Peppery and light hoppy taste. Complex with fruit flavors. Some buried dark fruit in there.

So good. Easy to drink and enjoy.

Served on-tap at Vol de Nuit NYC in a 250ml Mardesous chalice

Appearance: Hazy gold with a medium white head that dissipates quickly but leaves spotty lace.

Smell: Spicy with coriander and citrus and a must aroma.

Taste: Begins mildly bitter and bready rounding out to citric flavors and then with a musty finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium body with natural carbonation and a slightly warming, yet refreshing, finish. The alcohol blends very well.

Drinkability: A thoroughly enjoyable Belgian brew- would love to have again.

I ordered a pint of this while ordering at Stuff Yer Face eatery in Brunswick, NJ near Rutgers campus, and finished it by the time the main course arrived. Nice golden ale, looks awesome in the glass. Very smooth with a light fruit after taste. I'd definitely seek this out again.

Dusty golden colors with nice thick pure white topper. Smells citrusy and sweet, with malty nose appeal. A great take on belgium ale; apples, pears, lemons, apricot and orange flavors nustle their way thru a carbonated full bodied swig. Very smooth and memorable, enjoyable and timeless beer.

La Chouffe

Appearance: Hazy light orange in color. Nice foamy head with big bubbles. Good amount of lacing going all the way down the glass.

Smell: Aroma of lemon, banana, Belgian ale yeast, and a little bit of spice. Just a hint of hops as well, a very inviting nose.

Taste: A really nice and complex beer. The same lemon tartness comes through. Light spices namely coriander and suggestion of white pepper. Chalky yeast lending Belgian flavors. Some banana is there. Wheat malt? Hops do just alittle to bitter and are not very perceivable.

Mouthfeel/Drinkability: Light to medium bodied, nice spicy finish. All around a very delicious beer and good flavors that blend together seamlessly. So far my favorite beer from brewery Achouffe.

While I enjoyed this beer, previously, in the bottled form, to have it on-tap is a special treat.
The pub where I get it serves it in full pints or 1/2 pints; the halfs are in official La Chouffe tulip-shaped glasses, which adds to the appeal.
Nice lacey white head,
Bubbly, slightly cloudy, pale straw color,
Sweet with some spice notes but no citrus flavor that I could discern,
Pleasant mouthfeel, not too syrupy, nice carbonation,
Very drinkable (although rather pricey at CAD $7 for the half pint, $12 for the full)

I've ordered it on two different occasions so it's got to be good.

A - A minimal off-white head quickly fades away leaving a luxurious veil of lacing sitting atop a densely hazed vibrantly glowing orange amber colored brew...

S - Mandarin oranges... Honey... Ginger... Clove... Corriander... Belgian yeast... Grassy notes... A slight hop component...

T - Wonderful balance and complexity... Sweet orange... Honey... Clove and assorted spices... Belgian yeast... A subtle hop presence... Bubblegum... Even and consistent throughout...

M - Medium bodied... Sturdy... The carbonation is a tad on the fizzy side... Sleek and smooth... Even and consistent sip after sip...

D - A rock solid Belgian Strong Pale Ale and another excellent offering from Brasserie d'Achouffe... A sophisticated offering and amongst the finer Belgian ales... This one gets my seal of approval and is something that I'll gladly welcome in my cellar anytime...

Was surprised to find this one on tap at a local watering hole, so was excited to give it a try!

A - Pours a nice light hazy golden orange colour, thumb of head with decent retention (couple minutes) and leaves some fine sticky lacing.

S - Cloves, banana, bubble gum and nutmeg all came through on the nose very nicely.

T - Cloves and banana dominate the palette, and a bit of a warming sensation from the alcohol, though non-offensive. Also a bit peppery on the finish with a wooden oak flavour that lingers as well.

M - Nice and light bodied, goes down smooth with a slight warming sensation from the alcohol.

D - Very tasty strong belgian. Although the higher ABV does come through, it is not offensive. The flavours are nicely rounded and it goes down smooth. I was very pleased with this one, and would definitely try it again.

On draught into a La Chouffe tulip.

A: Pours golden hazy, pillowy white one finger head.

S: Smell is somewhat subdued; very light, flowers, wheat, Belgian.

T: Very spicy, some cloves and bananas, light fruit, roses, floral - both hop and flower - sweet, tortilla kind of breadiness.

M: Mouthfeel is creamy with very good carbonatoon, small bubbles, not too strong.

D: Drinkability is good, sweet and spicy, yet light on the palate.

This was great. I loved the spice and the overall flavor. I really wanna get my hands on more of this.
