Houblon Chouffe has the bright and sunny complexion you'd expect given the summery atmosphere portrayed on its label. It also has a head as thick, fluffy and white as the little gnome's beard. This clear golden liquid and its dainty, tiny bubbles looks like refreshment if I've ever seen it.

The nose is all sorts of wonderful - most of them hop-derived. Snippets of herbal pungency, citrus fruits and spring flowers combine to make an engrossing, all-encompassing hop-tastic bouquet. There are few smells I love more than this one (or, more specifically, this combination of smells).

The taste offers so many flavours that if I listed them all you'd think I was lying. So I'll limit it to just the most impressionable: bubblegum, canteloupe, biscuits, banana, vanilla, clove, oregano, pineapple, rose petal, hibiscus, wheat... each sip contains more delicious flavours than my brain can process!

But seriously, when it comes to Double IPAs, or Belgian Strong Goldens for that matter, there are few as approachable, delightful, and characterful as this. You couldn't ever guess the alcohol and bitterness (9% and 59 IBUs). Drinking this is like laying in a hammock on a warm day.

Houblon Chouffe truly is an oldie but a goodie. One of the original 'Belgian IPAs' it is still among - I'd argue the - best one out there. I don't remember ever having a single draft pour or bottle that left me smiling any less than ear to ear. If you don't care for this you don't care for the style.

Very frothy, pale body. Great clingy lace.
Heaps of Belgian-ness on the nose.... Lots of Tripel, although not loads of hops, they are present... (and a fresh batch in store.) Lemons dominate.
Nicely carbonated, and goes down well, with no real hint of the big ABV, save a slight warming...
Worth it's reputation.
