With both Oktoberfest lager and pumpkin ale in full full swing, which do brewers choose? Maybe they choose both, but not in separate pints, but as the Blue Stallion brewers show, they can coexist in the same.
Like a richer Oktoberfestbier, the medium amber hues strike the eye with the toasted appearance of fall and an orange tint of pumpkin. Its toasted sweetness graces the palate with savory bread crust, caramel, cashew and freshly roasted grain. But the strong waft of allspice cannot be ignored as its aroma and initial taste is vibrant and spicy with those yearning fall spices.
Its malty-sweet and medium bodied middle palate is savory and caramel-rich as a praline taste and texture firmly supports the cinnamon, nutmeg and clove spices that bounce about the tastebuds. It seems that a heartier-than-usual festbier is ideally suited for spice additions.
Spicy-sweet to close, the malt sugars and textures waiver and allow for a drinkable dryness to ensue. Meanwhile, the continued buildup of spice leads to peppery warmth, a spicy tingle and added dryness of all its own. Avoiding any astringency or added bulk, Blue Stallion's Spiced O'Fest brings the best of both worlds to Central Kentucky.
