Blind beer #5 from Shogo. enjoyed while I watched some Jeeves and Wooster. I've grown into such a raving Wodehouse fan that it's ridiculous!

This one says it calls for a wine glass. I chose to head into battle with my Goose Island stemware!

So this is ANOTHER 11.2 oz stubby bottle... I'm sensing a Belgium theme here.

Dry wheat and malted barley come through on the nose with notes of white grapes.
The flavor is intensely dry, with light notes of some lactic fermentation. There's something here that reminds me of one ofthe recent Upland Lambics-- like the Persimmon... Citrusy lemony/limey notes.
It isn't exactly sour, but just kinda tart. Rather floral as well.

Drinks almost like a white wine.

I don't know what this is... I'm thinking some sort of blend or Belgian beer infused with some fruit of some kind.

--REVEAL-- 'T Smisje Blond.
So this is a Belgian pale ale brewed with lime blossoms.

This is a very interesting take on a BPA. I like it, but I would prefer a genuine sour!

Sampled on January 1, 2012. The pour is a cloudy, light amber-orange with a fizzy white head that dissolves as quickly as it is poured. The aroma is lightly malted with flat fruits bringing out more of a sour sensation that a mellow one like other Blondes. The body is very light and thin. The taste leans to the sour side with no noted hop finish to speak of. My first beer of the New Year was a bit disappointing.

A: Pours a hazy, orange-tinted gold with a creamy white mousse that recedes quickly. It looks cool, but I get the impression that this bottle is pretty old.

S: Aromas of must, lemon, lime, bitter orange, grass, and sour, bready yeast are present on the nose. This pale ale smells pretty good until that sour, yeasty scent kicks in and takes over completely. Very unrefined.

T: Notes of lime, lemon, must, grass, hay, minerals, talc, bitter orange, and sour yeast are very apparent. The finish is extremely tart and gritty with lemon, lime, bitter orange, and mineral flavors.

M: Light to medium bodied and dry. The carbonation is oddly lacking-in fact, it is barely noticeable. This beer also has an unpleasant gritty feel on the palate that is extremely distracting.

O: This ale is really strange. Though it may be unique, it is not appealing in the slightest. The flavors just don't merge. At best, this ale is an unpleasant, sharp mess. Easily the worst Smisje beer I've had.

Enjoyed this 11.2 oz stubby bottle out of a large snifter glass.

A: Light golden ale with a thin, white, 1-finger head that quickly dissipates into a wispy lacy.

S: Spicy candi malt aroma fills the nose. Hints of yeast and citrus bring up the background.

T: Moderate bitter and slightly sweet ale. Lemony zest pops at first and then it mellowed out by the somewhat boring malt backbone.

M: Medium body and medium carbonation. Alcohol is present but not overwhelming.

O: Just a so-so Belgian blond ale. This taste is a bit sour for me. Worth the taste but nothing I would grab again.

dirty blond look, two finger head settles down to a small ring. Not a whole lot here in the smell dept, faint hay. Small bubbles, decent mouthfeel. Taste is a little saison-y upfront that morph's into a dry mildly citrus aftertaste. Actually very thirst quenching, tho interesting, not a compelling beer. I love their dubbel and Calva Reserva, but this one doesn't live up to it's big brothers standards.

This beer pours out slightly cloudy with a small head and a minimal lace. Although Belgian blond ales are not a classic Belgian I enjoy them a lot they tend to be on the sweeter end of the spectrum with more hints of fruits. However this is not in that category I do not really taste any profound characteristics in the beer beyond the alcohol finish as well as spice flavors. Belgian beers are my favorite style of beer however this is not one of my favorite.

Pours a golden orange color with a small head that fizzes and dissipates quickly but not instantly. Strong smell of sour apples. The taste unfortunately does not live up to the smell. Straw and bitter spice are the only real flavors that come through, and not in a good way. The carbonation is lively but the body is too thin and there is a strong bitter aftertaste. not the best offering i have tried from this company.

11.2 oz. bottle,

A: Pours a hazy gold, looks a bit like a wit. Nice white head, some lace.

S: Limes, bordering on rotten - oranges, peppery yeast, leather.

T: Yeast, lemon and coriander make up the main flavour. Some sweet orange near the finish. Earthy hop finish.

M: Medium-bodied, crisp biting carbonation.

D: Not a bad little beer. Tasty interesting, a bit expensive but not crazy for Belgians.

Bottle conditioned. Don't pick up any lime blossoms except perhaps a slight hint in the finish, then again, maybe not.... Anyway, poured a small to medium off white head that quickly subsides and no lace.Color is a cloudy amber. Arom is yeasty, malty, leather, earth, minerals plus a bit of fruit and spice. Flavor is like aroma, sweetness comes out more and so does the mineral. Not that great. Body is ok and so is carbonation. Finish also has big mineral up front and altogether is medium in length.

12 oz bottle poured into a tulip

Careful pour results in a clear yellow golden color, strong carbonation, bubbly white head that fades to a cap with a thick ring of lacing. Strong, bland aroma of belgian yeast and citrus sweetness, lime primarily. Mouthfeel is rather thick and chewy with soft carbonation and a wet, mildly earthy finish. Nothing is really wrong with the flavor or this beer in general, it's just rather boring. Not quite as sweet as the nose, but the lime citrus flavors still appear in the finish. Flavor starts yeasty and herby, not quite as crisp as expected. Not quite as interesting as I hoped for when I saw lime-blossom mentioned on the label.

Light orange color with large bubbles. Fruity nose is led by assertive tropical stuff--mango or guava, methinks. Some heady spice is there, faintly.

Fairly light-bodied for a blond. On the palate it's a little malty up front but the fruit promised by the nose is MIA. Nor is there much of a "middle" to the flavor profile. Smoke and mushroom introduce the finish with a solid bitterness concluding matters.

I'd drink it again, though I know I could do better for the price.

A: pours a hazy golden blond down, with about 2 fingers of loose head that dissipates quickly.

S: Gorgeous scent of nectarines, white peach, citrus fruits, faint oranges and white grape juice, with a touch of Belgian yeasts.

T: Inception is juicy citrus fruits, followed by a strange bitterness and taste reminiscent of strong Chinese herbal medicine. Finish is spicy and phenolic, with a faint aftertaste of limes.

M: Highly carbonated to complement the pepperiness.

D: Everything else was wonderful about this beer except the strange medicinal bitterness in the taste. This is just one element short of a stellar brew; unfortunately, that element will convince me otherwise to have another.

Bought this on a whim at a store in Baltimore, love Belgian style beers, & wanted to try something new. But what the heck is this?

Yellow color. Smells like Corona & Lime mixed with iced tea. Alcoholly, stinky. Smells almost like rotting bark.

Tastes how it smells. Like cheap malt liquor infused with citrus and nail polish remover.

Burns a little bit. Weird after taste, I can't describe it.

Tried to drink all of it, since it WAS $7. Got 3/4 of the way there, then down the drain it went.

this beer tastes like mashed potatoes. after the first sip i thought: "no, that can't be right". but sure enough, second sip, there it was again. this persisted throughout the whole beer.

the best way i can descibe it is this. you know how potatoes kinda taste like dirt?(not really in a bad way). well this tastes like that.

weird, but not really bad.

although this beer goes down well and doesnt hit too hard it has a strange taste. i am all for unique beer but this one is weird. it smells and has an aftertaste of swiss cheese to me. it tastes like a lambic, without and sugary sweet taste. it also taste like it has seltzer water in the beer. i liked it, kinda, but am not sure i would get this beer again, it was expensive and for the money i dont know if it was worth it.

squat 11.2oz bottle

'T Smisje Blond pours a hazy brown/yellow color with some visible sediment, a big white head and lots of sticking. Floral, citrusy hops come through on the nose as well as a lot of yeast character and some spices. Yeasty/bready taste as well and lots of pale malts, some corn, citrus fruit skins, and just the right amount of hop bitterness. Classic Belgian body and highly drinkable...grab one if spotted, grab anything from DeRegenboog if spotted!

Has this in a session last week, I believe the beer came from Mr. Capone.

Pours a nice cloudy yellow, with decent carbonation. Head laced for the entire tasting.

The bouquet was interesting. The yeast was upfront, but I got hints of grain and exotic fruit as the tasting went on.

The taste was interesting, I got light malt and some banana upfront, but a hint of clove on the back end.

The body was medium and the beer had decent mouthfeel. This is a decent belgian, but that backtaste makes this unusual and one that will require a bit of getting used to.

Well, it was poured in a tulip glass and had a very nice yellow cloudy appearance but this was a weird blend of smoke and grapefruit, it took some getting used to and was hard for me to finish, the nose is full of smoke for some reason, but it was big on a sour grapefruit taste. It grew on me a little bit after it warmed some, but still kinda weird. Not really one I would seek out again.

11.2 oz picked up at the Coop last week for about $3.50.. poured into my New Belgium snifter.

2 Finger head dies back very quick.. no lacing atop a slightly hazy (despite a very careful pour) straw colored brew.

Aroma is a fruity/floral cardboard.. Smells oxidized for sure... not much else to say here.

Flavor is pale malts and floral with wet cardboard.. are we getting a pattern? I'll let it warm up... Done... Too bad.. now we have Band-aids... Uggghhh. Pale malts with the citrusy/floral overtones, but it still is very oxidized.

I've paid my dues over the years with 2 other bottles ... I will not buy again. I just don't think that this one is destined to be a star in the States... at least not from the bottle. It appears to me that it really doesn't appreciate the jostling from Belgium to Boise.

Too bad really.. seems like a fantastic idea.. I love the smell of citrus blossums, and think they would be fantastic in a Belgian Pale without too much other yeasty fruitiness... but this one is way beyond not drinkable... and I honestly tried. My notes from the other two previous bottles show pretty much the same thing.. but this time, I am a little pissed off that I again spent way too much money on an obviously bad beer.

I am not angry at the COOP... but the importer. Where is the quality control?

Poured from the 11.2oz bottle into a brandy snifter.

Appearance- Thick with yeast at the bottom of the bottle. A full finger of froth that fades to a mere film over the top. Lacing clings to the sides.

Smell- Talcum and rubber. Yeasty and very little in the malt department. Light banana and pineapple hiding in the background.

Taste- Thin and tastes to be past its prime. Chalky and powdery. Way too thin. Not light struck, maybe just too old. Oxidized hops, oxidized malt as well, vegetated. Not too good.

Mouthfeel- Thin, light bodied, decently carbonated at best. Astringent like powder. Sticky, but not warming.

Drinkability- Pretty damn bad. Nearly a drain pour, but this was a learning experience with all those strange off flavours, so down the hatch.
