Drinking a bottle of this brew at room temp in a snifter. The beer pours a clear mahogany with some garnet tints, the bottom of the bottle releases some yeast dredges into the glass. I get a soft fluffy off-white head of about .5 cm to foam up. Aroma is dark fruit, ripe plums, raisins and cherries dominate, but I also detect lemon and banana as well. Actually I hint of nutmeg perhaps too. First sip reveals a thinner body than expected with very smooth, gentle and almost non-existent carbonation. Flavor is generally sweet, with ripe fruit coming through again, plums and prunes mix with caramel and again the lemon shows up. I get a bit of bitter earthy hop presence on the finish as well. A quite tasty and easy to drink beer. Very smooth for 12%.

quad done with valerian root and lemon balm, a nice herbal touch to a peciuiarly light base quad. cloudy medium amber color without much thickness, i am surprised how light this is, with effervescent carbonation it hardly looks like a quad at all. the yeast is forward in the nose, with esters of pears and figs and raisins, as well as a green tea bitterness likely from the lemon balm. the flavor is the same as the nose, not super complex or evolving, but extremely different from what we generally expect in a quad. absent is the dense dark sweet grains, and instead there is an herbal springtime lightness to it that aids in drinkability. i would never in a million years guess 12% abv for this beer, it drinks so much lighter than that. a beer that probably deserves a little more attention on our shores here, especially considering how affordable it is. i wish for more body out of a quad, and thats the part that really threw me off, but i loved the bright bubbles and the dryness on the finish. cool use of these botanicals in a very unique beer.

Found this lonely little bottle in my local beer store and decided to buy it and check it out.

Appearance 4.0: Poured out a beautiful brownish gold. Weird black gunk all around inside of neck. The beer itself was completely translucent. Nice 1/2" head quickly disappeared and left nothing on top. No lacing whatsoever.

Smell 4.0: Beautiful bouquet. Malt, candi sugar, deep scents of wood and yeast along with a pleasant noble hop aroma. Also a strange hint of root veggies.

Taste 4.0: Front is slightly sweet and very smooth. Middle is somewhat dry with accents on an unusual taste of rooty veggies (the bottle states that the beer was brewed with "valerian and Lemon balm" so that may explain some of it). The finish is also slightly dry, but features a wave of sweet in the middle of the palate; this quickly fades into the Aftertaste which is smooth, slightly tangy and refreshing. Absolutely no indication of the 12%+ ABV this baby is packing.

Mouthfeel 4.0: The mouthfeel certainly enhances the enjoyment of the beer.

Overall 4.0: A unique tasting beer and I do not mean that with any sarcasm. The rooty flavor is interesting and not a distraction. Also, this is a big BIG beer and it is a credit to the brewers that the alcohol is successfully hidden and the focus of this beer is on taste, not alcohol consumption. Recommended...if you can find it!

Poured from 11.2oz bottle into Chimay goblet

A - Lighter in color than expected from a quad. Cream colored head that settles quickly.

S - Caramel, raisin, yeast...a sticky bun in a glass!

T - Alcohol bite, grainy malt, vague raisin/candy sugar flavors.

M - Thin feel with strong alcohol.

There are certainly better quads out there. This beer has the right notes but the volume has been turned way down. While the label marks it as an ale brewed with spices, these flavors are lacking or hidden by the alcohol bite.

Doesn't strike you as a Quad - but it offers some interesting flavors.

A: nice, big head...dark amber color, rather clear

S: caramel, acetic acid (like a weakened cider vinegar)

T: woody as hell, forest-musty....lightly bread-crusty (reminiscent of Jenlain Ambree), almond?....tannic, tea-like finish....sherry-like oxidation, yet surprisingly mellow in attack, clean overall

M: smooth, medium-full, pretty dry finish, little bit of a tingle....a bit hard to tell it's 12%

O: not what I think of with a Quad, but obviously notable for other reasons....curious about the handling and age of the bottle...

From a 330 ml bottle into a chalice.

A-The brew has a unique, reddish-orange-hued brown color...lighter than most quads. It is quite murky. A normal pour produces about one finger of dense, tan head. A thick cap hangs around but leaves no lacing.

S-The smell is sweet and boozy, but not hot or alcoholic smelling. I get some brown sugar and dark, overripe fruit scents.

T-The taste is also sweet and boozy with flavors of overripe fruit, molasses, and rum. There is a little hit of spicy pepper on the finish.

F-The brew is medium-bodied with a little hit of fine carbonation. Between the fine carbonation and the lingering cap of foam, it produces a nice creamy feel.

O-This is a pretty good quad with a unique flavor that tends toward fruit and sugar, instead of fruit, spice, and tobacco flavors. The high ABV is not hidden, but is displayed in a tasteful manner. This brew doesn't compare with my favorite quads, but I would not hesitate to drink this again.

A: The beer is hazy brownish amber in color and poured with a thin collar of bubbles around the edge of the glass.
S: Aromas of fruits are present in the nose along with notes of caramel malts and hints of yeast.
T: Like the smell, the taste is complex and has some sweetness with flavors of caramel, dark fruits and yeast.
M: It feels medium- to full-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer is very easy to drink considering its strength because the alcohol is well hidden from the taste.

Picked up a bottle from Magnums on the 4th of July 2010 for $5.99.

Beer opened resoundingly flat and decanted without a head. Upon further examination of the bottle i discovered it was bottled in 2002. This could be good or could be bad...

Nose was quite lovely, dark ripe fruits dominate.

Taste is pretty similar to the nose, dark fruits and candi sugar. Finishes slightly sweet. Not catching any oxidation.

Mouthfeel is fairly full nut not overly smooth.

Overall this was a pretty fun considering this is my first ten year old beer. It has held up considerably well. I am guessing this came out of someone's rare beer collection and was resold...

Review from 7/2010 notes. Poured into a Gulden Draak tulip. Pours a dark orange amber with a slight head and no lacing. Aroma estery and boozy. Flavor of brown sugar, fruit, especially orange, booze. Odd spicy finish, mega booze. Interesting flavors, but not at all balanced and the alcohol dominates. Interesting flavors if it was a bit more balanced.

A: Poured from a bottle to a goblet. Had a brown color and murky consistency. There was an inch and a half of creamy, fairly long-lasting head. Average lacing.

S: A good, solid aroma of fruit, yeast, and some spices.

T: Tasted of Belgian yeast, spices (pepper), fruit (apples), and some malt as well. Not exactly a groundbreaking flavor, but focused and tasty.

M: A huge amount of carbonation with a smooth finish. Medium-bodied.

O: A solidly made, well constructed, drinkable brew.
