33cl into a tulip. Poured a nearly transparent garnet butterscotch, fairly light. Aggressive pour required for minor head that receded to the surface rather quick, large bubbles at the base of the glass. Nice lacing.

Aroma is not of a quad. Minor dark fruits, predominately light skinned. Strong sweetness, honey.

Taste surprises, a minor phenolic smokiness rides the length of the flavor. Taste is rather simple, lacks complexity. Again, strong sweetness. The aftertaste while lacking definition fades pleasantly. Warmth from alcohol is restrained. Full bodied mouthfeel.

Aromas are inviting for sure. Dark fruits, sweet caramels, some earthy/funk/woodiness, no alcohol, but it just smells strong.

Tastes follow the nose. Pretty standard Belgian yeastiness, prunes, cherries, raisin, toffee, dark caramels. Yum, I am consuming this way too fast for a 12% beer.

As the beer warms you can detect a slight bit of the alcohol and you can kinda pick out some earthy hop flavors as well. Belgian yeast adds some decent "spice" qualities.

I had this on tap at the Map Room into a tulip. The beer pours a very light and clear maghonby color. Not what I expect when I"m drinking a quad. The aroma and taste are not what I was expecting either. When I think quad I want trappist quad not this. It has quad tendicies you can smell and taste all the inverted sugar here, but not any notes of caramel or dark fruits. overall, it wasn't what I was expecting, aside from that an average beer on its own merits.

Interesting color..kind of a deep orange mahogany, clear through the pours, translucent in the glass..sediment on the bottom...yes, I'm gonna do the conditioned stuff. Sheets of pastel off orange Belgian lacing. Earthy nose that hints that this one is going to be on the thin side. Raisin, figs and plum, a little booze; all quite nice but slightly understated. The flavor matches up quite nicely with the nose. Adequately carbonated, the mouth feel as understated as the nose. REALLY can't believe that this one is 12% ABV. Drinkability??your call. This one will creep up and bite you in the a$$, but crazy incognito. Recommended for those who consider themselves quad-noisseurs. Cheers..glad to find this one at Premier Gourmet in Buffalo.

Reviewed from my notes of a rare cask pour at the Lion's Pride's Belgian Beer Festival. This cask was just tapped moments before I was served a glass; it had been stored in a cooler, so it was at a lower temperature than most cask beers are poured. It has a beautiful creamy copper/brown color. There are two fingers worth of white foam. The head settled slowly to an even skim of white. Perfect lace was left behind. This is exactly how a cask beer should look. It has a subtle aroma; a little cidery, spicy and sweet. It's a good balance of the strong smells you get from a quad and the faint smells from casked beer. The flavor has sweet malts up front, with some crystal sugar and a slight cider taste. There is alcohol and pepper in the finish. It's very unique and tasty. It has a lighter medium body; surprising for a quad, but right in line with a lot of the cask beers I've tried. There isn't much carbonation, but more than other casks, perhaps keeping the cask chilled helped with this. The beer leaves a great sweet coating on my tongue. There are plenty of alcohol vapors as well. It is slightly stickier than I like; I would rate it a 4.25 if I could. This is supremely drinkable, considering the strength, alcohol and spice. It's such a unique beer, I can't really say if it exceeds or conforms to the expectations of any style. It's just great. If you ever see the BBB on cask, get it!

On cask at Max's today.

The beer pours an orange, tannish brown color with OK head retention and lacing. The nose offers up brown sugar, orange and considerable spice. On the palate this beer is definitely on the sweet side, with brown sugar, chocolate and spice. The spice helps to cut through some of the sweetness, but there's no denying that this beer is on the sweet side. Mouthfeel is surprisingly light for the sweetness and alcohol, though on the other hand, there is plenty of flavor. Drinkability is pretty good for the sweetness and alcohol, though there's no denying that a little bit goes a long way.

Nice beer on cask.

Purchased at Ramsey Liquors in the late Summer of 2009, this was originally going to be competing against several other quadrupel style beers in a blind tasting. Now, about six months later, I'll sample this beer between fridge and cellar temperature in a Gouden Carolus chalice. 11.2oz. bottle, Vintage 2002.

Appearance- Due to its mighty strength, this beer only offers a thin, quarter-inch head that rapidly sinks into the surface. A cola-like display of bubbles along the glass walls, complete with their audible hiss and pop as they reach the surface, create a wildly active attraction for the eyes. There is absolutely no lacing to be seen.

Smell- Sugary, over-ripened dark fruits such as figs and dates rush the nose, transforming into a suggestion of cocoa and pralines... getting even better as the beer comes to cellar temperature.

Taste- Lush, sweet candi sugar and a rich malt character flood the tastebuds with delight, while the gentle spices and hops add a zip of stinging, lemony bitterness. The alcohol is a bit hot, even with between 7 and 8 years of bottle conditioning... and the effects are imminent. A few ounces left in this small bottle and I'm feeling no pain.

Mouthfeel/Drinkability- The texture gets better throughout the tasting, going from prickly to a more foamy, rolling carbonation. I add the yeast to the final 2oz. pour, and the edges are softened along with the alcohol heat. An interesting, enjoyable Belgian quad that has withstood the test of time.

Had a bottle for $10 at The Farmhouse in Emmaus, PA. Poured murky brown with a short tan head. 12% is a lot for a Belgian and it shows. This beer is more barleywine than anything, though the Belgian influence is there. The big fig and cocoa malt flavor are certainly rich, but the body is thin and dry enough (like a good quad) to make this drinkable and avoid a syrup-y feeling. Still the flavor isn't terribly complex. I'd call this more of a strong dark as it doesn't resemble your average quad.

Not exactly sure of the year on this one, but I've had it in my cellar for at least 2-3 years. Poured from bottle into a Corsendonk chalice. Beer was an iced tea brown color with a thick, two-finger, tan head. Moderate carbonation and lacing.

Aroma was very sweet candi sugar, vanilla, oak, brown sugar, caramel, but also a touch of grass and citrus. Lots going on in the nose.

Taste was not overly sweet, but lots of malt, sugar, honey, along with lemon, grapes and yeast.

Very bold aroma, but a bit lighter in the taste. Still pretty boozy. Has held up very well. Not your average quad.

purchased on sale at my favorite bottle shop on sale for 3.99. couldnt pass that up! poured into a brand new chimay chalice. the label looks like it was copied on an ancient copier and can hardly be read

A- this one pours out a murky dark brown with lighter highlights the higher up the glass you look. a small khaki colored head forms and lasts the entire length of the beer. it leaves a solid wall of sticky lacing behind after every sip.

S- lots and lots of sweet malts. brown sugar and dark fruits. figs and raisins are the strongest. plums and cherries as well.

T- as with the smell, this one is very sweet. brown sugar loud and clear, followed by lots of ripe dark fruits. cherries, figs, plums, raisins and tobacco. the massive amount of alcohol in this one is very well hidden.

M- medium and nearly full bodied, which is a little thick for the style. a nice lowish level of carbonation which is also unusual. both seem to work for this one however. a moderate warming from the alcohol on its way down.

D- easy to drink and a fine choice to christen my new glass. the alcohol is remarkably well hidden and could have been a problem if i didnt know how strong it was. something ill try to go back and snatch a few more up of. check this one out if you get the chance.

Got this at Siciliano's in Grand Rapids, MI and poured into a snifter while still cool from their cooler.. Reddish brown tint not hazy, not dirty, quite a nice looking beer in the glass. Little bit of head, fine bubbles.

Figs and raisins on the nose, brown sugar, malty goodness.

Taste is quite something on this one, for a big beer you don't get as much of the alcohol as you would think and the malts and the belgian yeast really balance well, brown sugar intermingles with a the malts as well.

Mouthfeel is kind of chewy, quite a lingering affect on the pallete.

Interesting beer! Quite good for a belgian quad.

33cl bottle (with a small square of white paper with "002" written in black pen affixed to the back of the bottle with scotch tape) I picked up a few months ago, served at cellar temp (~55F). Poured into my large St. Feuillien goblet, 't Smisje BBBourgondier is a murky pale, rusty brown, like apple cider, with a modest, off-white head that leaves decent lace.

Smell is very strong. Sweet caramel malt and lemon balm (as cited on the label), with a bit of a tang to it. Frankly, its too much - from the first whiff, I was scared of what this would taste like (which proved unfounded).

Taste is pretty good, very robust, there is a sour, spicy bit from the lemon balm, a rich maltiness but more bittersweet, with peppery esters and a bitter, astringent finish that I'd guess is more spices then bittering hops. Not your average quad, more like a kitchen sink BSDA. The aftertaste is rather tannic.

Mouthfeel is full of creamy carbonation, medium bodied.

Drinkability isn't too high, even though it was a pretty enjoyable experience. This is super strong, and while the ABV is well hidden, the flavors are intense, and it's not something you'd want a second glass of, even if you really enjoyed the first. While far from pedestrian, I thought it was overall of average quality.

Clear reddish brown colored beer with a good tan head that forms and falls. Hell of a lot of sediment in this bottle and it doesn't form a solid plug either, pour carefully!

Smell is sweet and quite strong with the fig aroma. Decently strong scent of lemon also, guess that is the lemon balm mentioned on the label, wonder if that is the same as lemon zest? Brown sugar with spice cake. Alcohol fumes carry more aromatic compounds mainly of citrus and strongly of ginger. Good stout bitterness holds the sweet in check.

The taste starts out sweet and malty with some orange and spice. Lemon is mostly an aftertaste like lemon. Not bad at all.

Mouthfeel is good.

Nice sipper I didn't really expect the strong citrus flavors in this beer. Haven't quite decided if I like this one or not, but it surely isn't a weekly flavored beer. Really need to find a big bottle of this and give it a further more intense analysis.

Poured a dark plum color with a slight cream colored head. Aroma of sweet berries balanced out by a nice sour scent. I was expecting this to be very sour but was surprised by the nice balance of dark fruits and bitter sourness. Very drinkable enjoyable beer.

Pours a hazy chestnut with a decent head that mostly fades , but sticks around as a thin, swirly cap. Fruity and slightly funky with persimmon and apricot. No hint of the bandaid aroma that you sometimes get with this brewery. The taste is quite a bit more sour, but with more sweet persimmon to balance the the flavors. A touch of lemon and sweet red apple rounds it out. Quite tame and smooth for the style, and the alcohol is unbelieavably well hidden. Nice, if a bit on the soft side.

Talk about from one extreme to another - the beer before was a tropical piss and now this. Age a small wedge of world champion aged gouda to set my mouth up. Yum! Worked perfect. Poured with a tan head. No lace. Hazy brown color. Odd mix of aromas: dark, ripe fruits, dark malts, a hint of wet cardboard, fudge, nuts, and and cocoa. Flavor was a little lighter. More of the dark, ripe fruits, some yeast, and honey. Soft body with a bit of tang from carbonation. Not much apparent alcohol surprisingly. Not the heavy hitter I would've expected either. Great beer though. Could get to thinking this is a session beer only to get carried out or stumble to bed.

A.Cloudy burgundy in appearance.Hard to see carbination due to cloudyness. Very small head probably due to the pour of the waitress.
S.Plum is the most prominant smell. With some other fruits in the mix, and a hint of alcohol.
T.Unique even among quads. A hint of plum and fig, sweet but does not hinder.
M.Near perfect carbonation. Mouthfeel is full and pleasant.
D.Excellant for a quad, I would be able to drink two of these and enjoy the whole ride a third would be pushing it.The alcohol is also a factor to consider at 12%.

I was recently accepted into the BBB babble belt, so I am very excited to try this beer. I havent drank a quad in quite some time so this will be quite enjoyable.
very active carbonation, light tan head,settles quickly, leaves good lacing.
Oats, lemons, white grape, lemons, sourish aromas.there is an odd protein like aroma, cant quite place it.
taste is medicinal(in a good way) figs, prune-bitterness, dates, thinner than most quad,mouthfeel is more of a farmhouse ale. Bitterish on the finish,but very drinkable. I never could have guessed from the cleanliness of the finish that this beer apprached anywhere near 12%abv, this is a well-masked high abv quad, very well executed.

A: Pours a dark cranberry red color, with virtually no head. 12% abv with lots peppery floaties.

S: quite strange with a sweet caramel peanut butter aroma and some bread.

T: The flavor was full of nice dark fruit, plums, prunes and raisins. Nice warming caramel with some alcohol detection but is very well hidden other wise. Also some fresh apples and toffee is detected in flavor. Upon warming alcohol stands out, caramel apple and warm fruit.

M: active from the carbonation with a nice silkiness texture to it. Slippery on the tongue.

D: The abv of 12% is very well hidden, perhaps to much so. Very sweet and a very good try.

This is a nice malty Belgian whose mouthfeel feels like its going to start out as a Flemish red, but quickly develops into heavy malt instead of sweetness or tartness. The color is a cloudy amber with a large, foamy head that dissipates into lingering lace. The smell makes it hard to pin down the style, but some booziness is detectable after a strong whiff. I think this would be best with some sturdy, aromatic type of food, like blue cheese, to go with it, more so than drinking it by itself.

Had at Rich O's in New Albany tonight -

Poured from the bottle with a finger of head which was gone quickly. This beer had a light brown/deep amber color. Smelled like dates. Initially tasted raisens, dates, and carmel. Then, some resiliant hops. Lightly sweet, fairly smooth. Medium body with the 12% etoh felt on the tongue as I let the beer sit. Very good, I'm glad I was able to sample this rather rare brew.

Poured into a snifter. Murky, reddish-brown with fat, plentiful bubbles forming an active foamy film on the surface and a neat ring around the edges. When the chill haze fades it is much more orange and clear.

Aroma us earthy, funky, some hard to identify fruit, like brandied cherries, or prune. Some alcohol in the nose, but nothing too fusel-like.

Taste is of sour malt, toffee, roasted lemon, raisin, some deep orange like Grand Marnier (from the hops?), candy sugar sweetness. The fruitiness is wrapped up in the alcohol warmth like a brandy or mascerated fruit. Bitterness is moderate, with spices and alcohol keeping the finish dry. Some medicinal taste in the finish.

Mouthfeel is surprisingly fizzy, which keeps the body in the medium range. Definitely can smell and taste the alcohol, and this one is going right to my head.

Overall some odd flavors going on here that I am not sure I can get a handle on. Seems to have a lot in common with some American barleywines. I think it lacks some coherency, but worth a try.

Edit: I started this one when it was much too cold. The medicinal and sour flavors mellow a bit as it warms, while the alcohol comes to the front, making for a more whiskey/brandy character. More enjoyable, but still a bit raw. Since I bought it in Chattanooga in a liquor store, so i suspect it has had plenty of time on the shelf to age, if not in the best conditions.

05/05/08- Purchased at Plumpjack's in San Francisco, CA.

Presentation- 11.2oz stubby bottle. Bottled in 2002, poured into my Rochefort chalice.

Appearance- Mohaganey in color with a bit of murky yeast floating around (small particles). About a 1/2 inch head which dies quickly. Leaves light spotty lace.

Smell- Fruity for sure with a caramel malted background. Definite figs, dates and raisins. Smells like it's going to be sugary as well.

Taste- Sugary, but not to the point of too much. Caramel malt flavor upon the first sip that changes to dark fruits (raisins and figs) and then mutates into a tropical flavor?!?! Thinking peaches. Odd, but really refreshing. Has a whiskey like alcohol flavor as well. Really hides the 12% abv well.

Mouthfeel- Brisk carbonation, but still smooth at the same time.

Drinkability- Really enjoyed this one. Have one more in my stash. Think I will age it for a few more years to see how it fares. Great flavors!

Nice cloudy mahogany color. Aroma and flavor are pretty much identical... raisins, figs, dates, caramel malts, and spicy. Alcohol is basically undetectable. Delicious, warming and fairly complex, this beer is a real treat. Pick up a few if you can find it.

Had this a couple times now and its great. It pours a hazy brown color with little head. The little bit of foam that appears is offwhite.

The smell is nice and spicy. Also some raisin smell. Very malty and sugary. The taste is strong on the spices but overall its not as strong as one might expect. The sweet malt and possibly candi sugar stand out and balance nicely with the spices. There is the slightest presence of hop bitterness.

Very drinkable and enjoyable. I found it was better when it warmed up, say around 55 to 60 F. I noticed that even as it warmed, no alcohol showed up in the smell or taste.
