At some point I had asked the owner of an exotic beer store for something weird and unique. This is what he gave me.
Dark orange with a towering white head. Bottle claims this is a golden ale but I heartily disagree. Don’t see many “orange ales” for sale.
Unique aroma, there’s an uncatagorizable floral hibiscus spice thing that dominates. Not sure what mustard seed smells like but if it smells like Goulden’s Spicy Brown I’m glad it’s not very obvious. Bruised orchard fruit like apricots and oxidized apple.
Taste is equally unusual and it’s going to take a while to sort it all out. Very dry with lots of spice and an even dryer moisture sucking finish. Malt like spaghetti squash sweet and tart strawberries. Don’t know that I’ve ever pulled spaghetti squash out of a beer before.
A good pick by whomever I bought this from. One of those beers that make me rethink beer as an art in addition to a beverage. I'm surprised by the lackluster reviews for this beer but I also mention of this brewery's inconsistency. Glad I got a good bottle.

Roger over at Bestway really was trying to get me to give this a try saying it was the best beer he ever had,I told him Iam not a Belgian lover but would give it a try anyway.Poured into a small tulip glass a hazed peach color with a great blooming white head that left multiple waves of broken lace behind as it settled into a creamy mass.Yeasty aromas with notes of clove and honey mainly.Wow a bit sour on the palate (from the mustard seeds?) with a little sharpness in the mouth,a herbal "green" hoppiness comes thru in the finish but the kinda sour profile turns me off to this.Eh I tried it and it was ok I guess.

No dating. Initially poured with a ton of frothy almond head, but settled down to a thick cap with some medium sized bubbles. Cloudy apricot amber and unclear, very thick looking. Can almost see a misty swirling. Mainly malty scents, not much else coming out. The first sip locked up the back of my jaw! After that it is just nicely soured flavors, like a brown that is edging towards a geuzue. Knowing about the mustard seeds in it, I am thinking about having a pretzel with a ton of good, grainy spicey mustard, then following it up with a swig of a good ale. There is just enough carbonation, when you give it a swish you can really notice it. There is more of a medium mouth with some bite to it. Very nicely flavored and surprisingly enjoyable. Not scary at all. When I picked this up on a StateLine trip, the crew I was with gave me such looks for picking it up, but this really turned out to be a very good drinker.

Thanks to Patra for this wonderful birthday gift. It is safe to say that this is the oddest beer that I have tasted. It pours the color of apple cider with a hazy body and a foamy white head. Wostytje has a funky aroma of hard apple cider, pineapple and yeast. The taste hits you with sour apple cider vinegar and funky earthy yeast. Then it turns somewhat sweet in the middle and end with an odd bitter and mustardy finish. The body is medium with a smooth texture. Overall it's a very odd beer. Unique. However for me the flavors just don't work together at all.

Small, stubby, Duvel style bottle, no freshness indication on my bottle/label. Pours a very cloudy dull light brown. Tan head, tightly packed and exhibiting nice retention. Impressive fine and scattered lacing. Nice looking brew. Nose is the expected mustard, wheat, with some powdered sugar. Notes here of soft peppery spicing, pleanty of fine vinegary mustard, some cloves and more mustard, I'll go along with the ham and cheese on wheat bread, heavy on the dijon mustard description. Differant, complex, interesting brew.Not for everybody but I'd like to give it a try with some salad, pepperoni, stinky cheese, nuts etc. Compelling brew, give it a try, why be normal?

Appearance: gold in color, 1.5 inch head, cloudy with some sediment in the head, moderate carbonation
Smell: toasted malt, spices, and golden mustard
Taste: mustard, medicine, and light malt
Mouthfeel: medium bodied, slightly bitter, very astringent, high carbonation that takes away from any smoothness
Drinkability: I appreciate a brewery taking a chance. I was really looking forward to this as I tend to like exotic beers. However, this was as close to a drainpour as I have gotten in a while. The mustard is very in your face and the other flavors add to the bite, not mesh, or even lighten it. The over-carbonation adds to the unpleasantness. If you love mustard, give it a shot, I will pass.

Bottle describes a "dark blonde ale brewed with 90% barley malt 10% Munich malt" and "two sorts of hops"... Would it be giving away too much to tell us which hops?
Cloudy and golden pour with a big bubbled head that at first that died down considerably but maintained at 1/4 inch or so. Sour and pungent/metallic aromas. Smells like I'm at a picnic and someone just walked by with a bowlful of warm German potato salad and a bottle of yeasty Hefeweizen. Mustard seed way at the back of my nose. Not overpowering at all and if I didn't know to look for it, I'd never think "mustard seed" so I'm obviously pre-loading my taste buds and olfactory receptors for ballpark franks and Colman's mustard powder.
Light, almost fluffy, mouthfeel. Body fills out as you sip. Not much in the way of spiciness. Hops right at the end of the swallow. Yeasty as all get out up front.
Overall a pleasant beer. Nothing to go seek out, but if you are curious about mustard seed as a beer spice, starting here wouldn't be all that bad, I suppose.

Dull and sedimented dark tan color, 1/2 inch head that laces a goblet in thick sheets. Sharp and piquant aroma, slightly cheesy and yeasty with a good sense of musk. Bright lemony flavor, some sense of pineapple and a sweet and sour sauce. Candy sugar lends a pleasant Wit-like tone to the malt and the hops are non-apparent. Finshes light (a little too light) with tight carbonation. It may be possible that the mustard seeds used in the brew add to the sharpness up front, but not as a mustard flavor. Odd little brew but fun and pretty drinkable to my tongue.

A- This beer pours a hazy almost murky caramel color with a huge head that takes up 3/4 of the glass. After the head dies down the second pour is a bit lumpy from the strong carbonation rousing the trub.
S- The soft cidery note has a hint of spice with some mustard seed qualities growing as the beer warms turning more harsh.
T- This beer has a soft mellow cidery note with a crystal malt dryness and a slight mustard spice in the finish. As the beer warms the malty mustard flavor comes through a bit more. Caramel malt and soft hop bitterness linger for a moment in the finish.
M- This beer has a medium-full mouthfeel with a full fizz and is a bit over carbonated but no alcohol heat.
D- The caramel cidery is almost caramel appley but not really sweet with the mustard being noticeable but not in your face. It was interesting to try but a bit too odd for a session beer.

The Duvel style necked in bottle promises candy sugar and mustard seeds on the label.
The appearance is an opaque reddish-orange with very fine carbonation, sliky.
Aroma is a fruity, yeasty Belgian but I had a hard time picking up mustard- just light spices.
In fact, I found this to be a balanced, full flavored slightly warming brew akin to Chimay.
The finish was quite clean. I'd drink this again.
Gotta wonder if the mustard is a come on to get folks to talk about and sample it.

The only other time I had this was in a bar somewhere in Manhattan several years ago. I remember absolutely loving it. The search has finally ended for another bottle, which I gladly pour it into a Lucifer snifter.
Real disappointing head, it quickly dissipates to little more than a thin crown around the rim. Color is a burnt orange with mild carbonation...looks like an IPA.
The aroma is wonderful. If you love mustard. It's no secret that the prime selling point of this ale is that it's brewed with mustard seeds. And man does that assert itself in the aroma, having a round, spicy peculiarity that I haven't found in any other beer. I love the nose here, which also brings to mind fresh carrot juice and candy sugar. The 7% alcohol is detected in the nose, but oddly I didn't get a trace of it in the tasting.
Flavor is as unusual as the aroma, but you have to use your nose as much as your tastebuds when bringing this into the mouth. Without that you're only getting half the story. The hops bitterness is offset by refreshing flavors of orange and stinky yeast (as in GOOD stinky). And dontcha know it, that mustard comes in to either ruin or make your day, depending on your tastes. The sour finish only adds to the weirdness of this wild ale.
Mouthfeel is a bit thin, but moderate carbonation keeps it from feeling flat or watery.
Not for everybody, and not even close to being a daily beer. But for a walk on the wild side without the commitment of huge ABV, this is recommended.

Surprises abound. But not in the hue. Mustard yellow, mixed with tan and grey. Dying bleached khaki head.
Brown sugar nose, with pickling brine, schwag, and sourdough.
Begins sweet, and loosely fruity. Brown sugar-covered mangoes, drenched in balsalmic vinegar. It's not supersour, but the tartness is certain manifest. Wild, yeastiness. Lightly nutty, but more generally, just raw. Red apple skin stuck with caramel and peanuts. Mustard seeds (luckily?) add little. Turns breadier as it concludes. Grainy, with pickled suggestions. Pungent, herbal, bongload finish, but not from hops. Though grassy bitterness does seep in late.
Medium in stature, with a rippling carbonation upfront, trailing off to a generalized fluffiness.
The mustard fails to stand alone. But this holds up in spite and because of that.
Not dazzling. Just solid. Mustard or not.

On-tap at The Belgian room, NYC. Light body, sourish, three weeks old, yellow body without head. Not too great a Belgian. I do not know about mustard beers, didn't they ban than in WWI? I do not think it works, but likely needs warning sign. Definite apple cider character.

Courtesy of ShogoKawada (thanks!). Poured from a 330mL bottle into my Bruery tulip.
Fulvous and dark goldenrod liquid, cloudy to the point of being opaque. Rocky mousse-like ivory head which is very active and recedes fairly rapidly to a half-finger of crackling foam.
Mustard, peppercorn, mildew, lemon, and Bermuda Buttercup in the nose. Very unusual, slightly funky.
Candi sugar, lemon, honey, shallots, red wine vinegar, and light cherry on the palate. What the hell? Sourdough, fermenting rice, and a bitter/sour finish. Umami? Few points of comparison here. Very difficult to rate.
Effervescent, chewy, and mouthwatering - well carbonated but not overly so.
An ale that is easy to appreciate though maybe not easy to like...though I'm enjoying it more than I expected. Pairs extremely well with certain food - I sliced up some rye bread and made some potato/leek soup. The perfect combo for a rainy evening.
Rating this "to style" is a bit of a joke...though this is more than just a gimmick, worth a try if you like mustard!

Poured from the 330ml bottle into a tulip glass. Body is a golden-orange color, topped by a decent-sized head creamy head that has some staying power. Aroma of spicy Belgian yeast, tangy pale malt, and a good zip from the mustard and other spices. Palate is quite interesting - sweet, subdued malt is present in the airy body up front. A flash of Dijon-style mustard taste comes and goes in a split second just before the swallow. Mellow sweetness and a light fruitiness are evident on the swallow, leading to a fairly dry finish.
The body of this beer is light and just a tad creamy, belying its fairly high alcohol content. This one goes down easy, and while the mustard is a noticeable quirk, it by no means overwhelms the other characteristics of the beer. Well done.

11.2oz bottle poured into a tulip glass. This is the first beer I have tried that is brewed with mustard, sounds like an interesting combination. Pours a cloudy orange/amber color with an off-white head that leaves a nice ring of lacing around the glass. The aroma is sweet and fruity with malt, mustard and other spices. The taste is malt with an array of spices, earthy barnyard flavors and Belgian yeast. I can't pick up much if any mustard in the flavor. Overall, this is a fantastic brew that I thoroughly enjoyed. It is certainly a weird combination, but the mustard is well integrated into the brew. Highly Recommended.

Pours with a medium off-white head over a hazy amber liquid. Delicate sharp and fruity/flowery nose. Light fruity taste with a weak background sourness that compliments the sweetness, some nuttiness from the mustard seed noted too. Minimal hoppiness. Finishes light and bubbly with a light spicy aftertaste...a decent unagressively flavored ale.

Deep golden/blond color with an impressive head that sticks around, imparting rings of lace to the glass. Nose features a healthy dose of sweet malt, some candy sugar, and a trace of the mustard seed used in the brewing process. The nose, consequently, is the only facet of this beer where the mustard is actually evident. Taste-wise, the palate is bombarded with sweet, nutty malt, earthy (Saaz?) hops, a distinctive yeast character and additional candy sugar. Mouthfeel is fairly rich, but seems to finish a bit too soon. Wostyntje is highly drinkable and certainly a unique creation. Even if you don't like mustard, this beer is worth a try.

I don't see how a person can look at a tap list, see a mustard beer, and not try it. Man, I love HopLeaf.
A - Cloudy orangeish body with very little head.
S - Nice mustard dryness on top of a candy-sweetness that ends up being balanced and spicy. Distinctive, but subtle, I'm quite impressed.
T - Very sweet and fruity at the entry, with lots of tartness. Dries out considerably the hops. On top of all of this is the mustard, which seemed a little strange at first, but as the glass warmed, as did I to this beer. Very different and yet balanced.
M - Crisp, nothing wrong.
D - I'm not saying that this is an everyday beer, or that this is for everyone. But I'm glad I tried it, and would recommend it to any BA with an interest in trying new things.

S: Whole grain mustard, grassy hops, slight acidity.
L: Hazy yellow, carbonated head that dissipates.
T: Mustard-seed like acidity right off the bat, subtle sweetness. Light tartness with some spiciness as well. Low bitterness, tartness compensates. Finishes fairly dry with touch of more mustard.
M: High carbonation, works great with flavors. Medium bodied.
An interesting beer to say the least. Lots of full grain mustard flavors and acidity. Not sure i could drink a lot of this, but it was great to try.

A bit of a cloudy copper amber color with an immense white head that is firm, thick and fluffy; not bad looking once and if you can the head to "calm down." Was a bit of an effort to overcome the two inch white pillow at the top of the glass.
Nose of white bread, yeast, stone fruit, hint of bananas and a bit of winter spices.
Mouthfeel is simply too carbonated, thus the big huge head with very large bubbles that take a while to dissipate. So carbonated almost hard to drink.
Flavor is Belgian fruity and malty with candy sugar but it's so carbonated that it feels and tastes like a sweet, light yeast big malt soda with spices. Has a bit of toffee, sweet coffee and cooked bananas in the flavor profile with a finish of whiskey. Sounds better than it is. Not bad flavors but the mouthfeel, excess spice and carbonation just make for too many flaws to drink pleasurably.

Recommended by fellow BA Jbsteiny. This beer pours a dark blonde actually similar in color to pumpkin with some yeast floating around in the bottom. It leaves a thin beige lace that is frothy and bubbly. The aroma is malted mustard, somewhat citrus in the nose, and a candy sugar smell in the background. The taste starts off on the palate tart and sweet, like a sweet tart, but more savory in terms of the mustard presence. Very malty I think to balance the acidic tang in the mustard but it is nice and smooth with a slight carbonation that refreshed the palate, only to give you one last bit of bitterness from a very minimal hop presence. A beer that is very unique, and I would def try again. I'd pair this beer with a grilled Deutchmacher Hotdog marinated in this brew with onions and grill it all.

Dark blonde 90% barley, 10% munich brewed with candi sugar and mustard seeds.
A: Pours a bright golden orange color with some haze, no head.
S: Weird funky aroma, some farmhouse scents, wild yeast, mixed with ammonia.
T: Funky yeast strain, with wet bread, sour yeast for flavor that is acidic and finishes with an ammonia presence and vinegar. Again some medicinal highlights. Acidic, sour oranges, ammonia, mustard seeds, sour alcohol finish out the flavor. Upon warming the alcohol and warm mustard seeds stand out.
M: light and watery and one I didn't want sitting on the tongue to long.
D: A quite strange and bizarre drink and not one I would go out and buy a sixer of. The high abv and lack of drinkability hurts this in the end. A curious try at best.
