This hybrid brings together all of the best qualities of Belgian brewing and American hopcentricity — spicy, hoppy, dry and complex.

My first beer at Buckledown and it is usually hard for me not to get an IPA off the bat, but Fiddlesticks did just that. It has a great nose and flavor, both full of hops with that distinct Belgian characteristic. I was able to sample all of their current selections and the owners/waitstaff were extremely generous and open. The brewery itself reminded me of Greenbush when it first opened. High ceilings and you smell the beer as soon as you walk through the doors. You can also watch the beer being made right from your seat at the bar. Only 4 on draft right now, but they are all brewed well.

On tap at the brewery - Lyons, IL. Hazy copper body with a foamy white head. Fruity & spicy Belgian yeast and fresh citrus for aroma. Hop forward and yeast forward producing flavors of grapefruit, apricot, orange, spicy wit yeast, mango, pine, along with a caramel malt base. Fuller body, resinous & sticky, moderate carbonation, finishing zesty and spicy with grapefruit, orange, and pine lingering on the palate. Good Belgian IPA here; nothing outside the box, but still good.

Enjoying this on-tap at a bar called BlackFinn Ameripub that's up the street from my hotel in Chicago. Served in a standard pint glass, this beer draws a clear, light to medium golden color with nice white head that's about 3/4 of an inch when first served that settles eventually to a thin ring lining the inside of the glass. Has decent lacing. Aromas of some crisp, slightly bready, slightly sweet malt notes along with slightly resinous citrus and piney hop notes. The taste is pretty much the same, with a slightly sweet, sort of bready malt presence that gives way to citrusy, piney, somewhat resinous hop bitterness notes. also has a bit of a peppery spice bite that adds a nice touch here. Has a mainly crisp, slightly prickly, medium to full bodied mouthfeel with moderate carbonation. Easy to drink in the good way.

A fine Belgian IPA. I used to be a big fan of the style, but now I prefer either a Belgian or an ipa. But if you like the style, this is certainly worth a try.
