Your father’s red ale was pretty to look at but not much to drink, seriously in need of a personality transplant. But over the years, red ales have turned into the real deal, with a character as lively and big as any pale ale. Reppin’ Red blends seven malts for layer upon layer of caramel and toasted toffee with the uniquely peppery spiciness of rye and tops it all off with a mix of selected Pacific Northwest hops, chosen for their lively flavors and sophisticated aromas of flowers, pine and citrus. It’s a big beer that demands big food. Reppin’ Red is fantastic with grilled meat and steaks, and totally rocks a burger. For something different, try it with blue cheese or a nice, sweet slice of carrot cake—you’ll be amazed.

An interesting brew out of Illinois that I believe I picked up in Eau Claire, Wisconsin back in October. Color is a nice clear copper with pinkish hues, mellow and bland, but pleasant, all capped with fine and fluffy tan lace. Superb retention! I'm guessing the addition of rye to the bill is to thank for that. Aromatically it is caramel, bready, grainy, and a little sour. Up front, taste is bready or crackery at the base, with caramel and toffee or brown sugar strongly pronounced, as described. Before long middling hop bitterness sets in, accompanied by mild peppercorn notes (from hops and/or rye), both underscored by the relatively high carbonation. For all that complexity and balance, it's surprisingly smooth. Medium-bodied with a nice crisp finish. Off the top of my head, it seems different from say New Belgium's Fat Tire or Stone's Levitation, but it is equally delicious, if not better. I also appreciate the Germanic heraldry looking thing on the label. That's a third of the reason it caught my eye in the first place (the other thirds being it containing rye, and then the fact that it's a beer).

From BeerAdvocate Magazine #81 (Oct 2013):

A delicate balance between malt and hops here. Sip after sip this beer evolves ... lots of layers here. There is a fine line between a Rye Ale and an ale that has rye in it. Reppin’ Red has just enough rye malt to be noticed. A step above decent, and worthy of a try.

STYLE: American Red Ale
ABV: 6.2%
AVAILABILITY: Year-round

LOOK: Brilliant red hue, thin lacing

SMELL: Caramel, toasted grain, hint of rye, spice, faint raisins, earthy hop, clean

TASTE: Lovely smoothness, medium bodied, herbal bitterness, toasty, spicy rye, nutty, hint of orange peel, peppery, toffee, dried grass, instant coffee, dates; malty, semidry finish

On tap at WoB in JAX Beach.
Clear red-brown with a fine head.
AROMA: sweet malts with a hint of toffee.
Flavor: about equal mix of hops and malts, and of bitter and sweet. More hops in the aftertaste.
Feel: medium body and carbonation.

On tap at the Berghoff bar in the United terminal at ORD. Nice amber-red hue and a thin layer of carbonation on top. Virtually no aroma - what's wrong with me?! Slight sweetness on the initial taste was replaced by hop bitterness lingered a bit and overwhelmed the maltiness the description touted. Not bad, but I was expecting something closer to the malt bomb they promoted.
