Hilo's Hawai'i Nui Brewing touts itself as the "Beer of Paradise," and the brews certainly are the most prevalent local available on-tap, at least on Kaua'i. Their Sunset Amber Ale pours a nice mahogany color with a quickly dissipating head with little or no lacing. This ale is refreshingly malt-forward and boasts a pleasing caramel finish--an excellent island session beer.

A pint in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, to go with the awesome sunset view over the Pacific Ocean from this breezy patio.
This beer appears a clear pale golden bronze hue, with one finger of fizzy beige head, which leaves some reaching tendril lace around the glass as it gently recedes.
It smells of mild fruity malt, and even fainter earthy, leafy hops. The taste is biscuity, grainy malt, a somewhat melted plastic essence, and mild leafy, weedy hops.
The bubbles are nice and even, the body a clammy medium weight, and smooth, but in a kind of palate-scraping manner. It finishes off-dry, the same edgy essences playing themselves out.
A very so-so example of an underwhelming style in the first place. Not entirely off-putting, but not inspiring either.

One last bottle from Mika and Brandee's Hawaii trip.
Hawai'i Nui Brewing, Beer of Paradise, Island Style.
Pours dark golden color, not really red amber. Chunky white head, good foam retention.
Nice tasting amber, malty sweetness with a good dose of balancing hops. Full flavored, medium bodied. All around a very well made beer, light enough to quench your thirst on a hot, humid Hawaii night.

A: Poured with a large, extremely frothy white head... this baby stuck around for minutes on end before it finally started to fade away, leaving thick lacing on the glass. Body is a dark copper color and clear.
S: Quite sweet aroma that is high with caramel... there is a very low hop presence that is barely noticeable.
T: The caramel flavor comes through again in spades... too many spades, I guess. I can't detect any hop flavor or bitterness... the sweetness is just too high. After a while it becomes a little sickening, to be honest.
M: Body is light-moderate, with medium carbonation.
D: This is a great looking beer that unfortunately is severely lacking in balance. If they had bumped up the hops some, I think it would come out really nice... however, the bottle I had was just too sweet-tasting, as the high caramel flavors almost made me feel ill.

12 oz brown bottle with pry off cap poured in a miscellaneous large glass in our rented condo at Turtle Bay, North Shore, Oahu. Purchased at Whole Foods in the Kahala Mall in Waikiki in a 6 pack.
Hazy brown amber in colour. Off-white head is 1/2 inch on the pour but recedes to a thin cap with spots of lacing here and there.
Sweet aroma of citrus (grapefruit) and malt (caramel).
Nicely balanced flavour between the malt and hops. Maly, woody, citrus hop, nutty and floral hops. Medium bitter hop finish is long lasting.
Light bodied. Maybe a little thin for an ale. Mildly carbonated.
A pleasant surprise. Simple and straight forward, but nicely balanced and refreshing. Definitely worth a try.

A - Pours Deep amber, lots of near white head, sudsy lace, lots of coating.
S - A little skanky, malty, not very appealing in standard general, but interesting, too.
T - Murky, thick malt, not much hops.
M - Medium body, coating, ok balance.
D - OK, good session.

Purchased at The Wine Corner in Paia, Maui, Hawaii. I picked this one up because I have never seen it in California.
Pours a slightly hazy amber color with a 1 inch fizzy beige head that settles to a thin cap. Thin foamy rings of lace line the glass on the drink down. Smell is of toasted malt, caramel, and some nutty aromas. Taste is of toasted malt, burnt caramel, candied nuts, and some interesting barbeque flavors. There is a mild bitterness on the palate after each sip. this beer has a higher level of carbonation with a bubbly and crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good amber ale but nothing too exciting.

From the former Hawai'i Nui Brewing (http://www.hawaiinuibrewing.com), now merged with Mehana (http://www.mehanabrewing.com/), comes this medium bodied ale. The color doesn't match the name very well (nothing reddish at all, it is golden) but the taste seems to be dead on. It has the characteristic sweetness I expect in this style, but not overly so, making it better than most.
It has a certain skunkiness in both nose and taste, but it is not overwhelming and thus it add to the charm.
I picked up a 22 oz bottle of this while sampling whatever I could find in Waikiki. If I were spending more time here I would definitely get more. IF I were considering shipping beer home (I am not) I would include one of these. It is a nice, flavorful brew.

Picked up a sixer from Foodland in Kapaa, Kauai for $10.99.
Beer poured a reddish brown with a nice head upon the initial pour.
Nose is pretty nondescript, there is a basically just malts and nothing else.
Taste is pretty well balanced between the nice caramel malt backbone with just enough grapefruit hop to prevent it from being too sweet.
Mouthfeel is medium bodied and pretty smooth. Decent carbonation makes it pretty refreshing.
Overall this is a pretty decent beer. Very nice after doing some hiking in Waimea Canyon!

A: Dark copper color. Poured a 2 finger foamy off-white head with good retention. Laced in thick rings.
S: Sweet crystal malts. Wet bread. Very light noble hop character.
T: Blast of caramel from the crytal malt up front. Grass and hay in the bitter can't quite overcome the big malts to balance.
M: Medium body. Moderate carbonation. with medium carbonation. A bit cloying as it lacked better balance.
D: Versus a hop bomb, this one's a malt bomb. Looked and smelled great, but needed a bit better balance.

Pours highly clear light amber forming a thin fizzy cap of white foam that dies down quickly leaving some speckled lacing behind.
Sweet malts, hay, wet bread and a touch of artificial sweetener. Not sure if the Hawaii humidity got into this one but it's kind of dank.
Pleasant nuttiness and crystal malt on the front not much hop character in the taste. Slightly bittering in the finish and dries pretty well. Malt heavy flavor just wish I could decode some hops from this one.
Thinner body, well carbonated but active when chilled. Dries well but leaves sweet residue behind.
Session amber, plain, but drinkable. There's better elsewhere but when you are on the rock in the middle of the ocean, elsewhere is pretty far away.
