The Dabney road location is great, lost of seating out doors and in doors, great beer selection for craft beer drinkers although casual beer drinkers probably will have difficulty finding something they truly like. They have a great hike box, and a ton of classic video games. Friendly staff, they offer music and even yoga classes at the location. Great place

V: Located - like so many breweries now - in an office park off the beaten path, Strangeways has a cozy atmosphere to it. It's bigger on the inside than expected, with a big patio area with tables. The beer menu is divided into styles or descriptions. A solid place.

Q: Looked to be a high level of quality here; no stale stuff.

S: Service was very friendly and clearly knowledgeable about their products.

S: An interesting and wide variety of beers - all Strangeways. Most are on tap, with your typical IPAs and DIPAs, as well as several Belgian styles, Berliner Weisses, imperial stouts, goses, and a couple of lagers. A varied mix that will please most people. They have a handful of beers in bombers (maybe 3), but everything on-tap is growler-ready.

This was my second favorite stop in Richmond after The Answer. A super funky brewery/brewpub in the outskirts of town with a nice, super chill vibe. A lot less polished than the newer breweries around Scott's Addition but a lot more fun and hella less crowded. No preppy douchebags here.

They have a million different beers on tap, including imperial stouts aged in brandy, rye and bourbon barrels, a barrel-aged wild barleywine ("Hinterlander") and 3 or versions of a gose aged in different rum and red-wine barrels and with different ingredients added.

WIld fun indeed!

Definitely some very interesting beers here and worth trying out. It gets pretty cramped inside, outside is typical lot area with a food truck, cornhole etc. but they allow smoking (or don't stop it) which I don't really like personally. Definitely worth going to try their beer though, not everything is great but some really interesting brews here for sure.

Stopped by for a second time and my thoughts were pretty similar to my first visit. Decent enough but nothing stellar. Beers are ok but nothing spectacular. Large selection between front and back bar. Service was very good with back bar server (a homebrewer too) chatting it up with me about barrel aging home brews.

Pretty awesome place. Nice setup inside. Friendly and helpful staff. They have a crazy amount of beers on tap, 30-40 beers on tap. Beers range from good to great.

A small place with great service and a separate tasting room inside the brewery. Occasionally they set up a stage back there (surrounded by barrels), where they have live music, burlesque shows, etc. They also have dog friendly events and are dog friendly in general(outside). There is always at least one food truck. They have a pretty wide selection of styles, and have bottles, crowlers and growlers to go. There is usually a firkin/cask beer available also, and nitrogen selections.

The ambiance is a bit strange - two separate bars, one back in the barrel room, a few scattered tables up front, dark with flashing lights and video games in the back. It all gives the impression of being somewhat haphazzard. The big plus here is the odd diversity of offerings - though they are hit or miss - running the gamut from hoppy beers to sours infused with bizarre ingredients like lucky charms. In a way the selection reminds me of a more whimsical Cascade Barrel House. Prices, particularly on small pours, is a bit steep. Nevertheless, a fun spot to visit when in town.

If you want a truly unique craft experience, this is the brewery for you! It may seem like a humble brewery from the parking lot but step inside and gaze upon the crazy artwork this place boasts. Then peruse the list of crazy experimental beers they offer! But wait, there's more! You can bypass the front tasting room to enter their beautiful and impressive brewing and bottling room where you can taste more beer, play board games and jinga. There is always a food truck around, the regulars are a ton of fun and it is just always a good time! I love my Strangeways and you'll have a good time trying all of the innovative styles they create. If there is one thing we need in craft beer, its experimentation and freedom to push the limits and Strangeways does it better than any brewery in the state. You might not enjoy all of their beers but i guarantee you'll find a few that make you grin from ear to ear.

Interesting review for me in that I can't precisely seem to numerically assign ratings for each category, so in other words my review score is more of an estimate with a slight +/- error. Anyway, place is worth stopping at if you're from out of town (read: me) but you might like it, you might hate it. Only serve their own beers (which you expect, I hope) but with 25 taps and additional beers that sold in bottles you probably will find at least one thing you want to try. However, most of the beers are spinoffs of other beers and they seem to make a lot of beers that straddle the line between interesting collaboration of ingredients and throwing a bunch of crap together and hope it works. Had a couple of beers and one was good and one was not good. As for the other characteristics of a brewery, can't really describe staff b/c this place was packed at 5PM on a Saturday and the beer ordering line (which moved at a slow pace) was an assembly line. The vibe seemed to be a mix of college kids and families with lots of people relaxing outside.

V - in an industrial office park setting, but inside the vibe is great - Unique decor, one big screen, good music (not too loud), and plenty of space to spread out between tables, decent sized bar, and then another full sized section in the production area with more tables, etc. Unique branding / image that is consistent through the space (cool bar top!). Outdoor area a well with umbrella covered tables and cornhole.

Q - Great quality if wilds, sours, and experimental stuff is your bag. But, there's plenty for everyone here.

S - great service - plenty of staff on site, all of whom were friendly, willing to chat, making sure everyone was taken care of. Great service vibe.

Selection - 25 different taps, plus 15 bottles available, hard to ask for much more diverse selection at a brewery.

Rerated in January 2017 after additional visits. Lowered the selection to a 3.75. A number of their beers have been disappointing.

------------

Visited on a Father's Day Sunday with family, including dog.

V - I would describe it as industrial beer geek brings family to work. A business park setting, but when one walks in the door it is all about the beer. Beer taps in the tap room as well as in the production side of the facility offer an opportunity to look at the equipment as well as their barrel program. My only complaint is their biergarten. Its not a biergarten but rather a parking lot with lots of picnic tables, food trucks, corn hole, etc. The place is definitely dog and kid friendly. 4.5

Q - How can you complain about the quality of beer when you are drinking at the brewery. 4.25

S - We arrived early but the service was already struggling inside. Having only one wireless register to run credit cards and cash was really slowing down things. Folks seemed very friendly though. Talked up someone in the production area about barrel availability and how they acquire their barrels. 3.75

S - 25 beers on tap. At least ten beers available in bottles, not all duplicates of the taps. Of course, all taps available in various size growlers. 4

Really awesome brewery to visit - over 30 beers to choose from. Great sours and wild options, lots of barrel aged varieties. Service is really terrific, the crew really wants you to enjoy your visit and find something you'll like. Inside is really cool, outdoor seating in the parking lot actually works well.
