On-tap at Prime 16, served in a goblet. This is from one of the experimental barrel projects undertaken by the importer B United, and is Old Engine Oil aged in Grenache barrels from a South African winery.

A: Black body with only faint garnet highlights around the extreme edges; on top lies a finger of frothy tan head that fades into a ring and leaves some light lace. Attractive.

S: Whoa, I was not prepared for this. Extremely sour, and in a very good way. Lots of tart grape, cherry, and cassis fruitiness is up front, backed by some tannic oak and a healthy dose of straight lactic sourness. Not much in the way of malt, but perhaps a touch of chocolate. Really intense, and really great.

T: Follows the nose - fruity and tart up front, with some chocolate and vanilla sweetness midway through ahead of a supremely tart, dry, tannic finish. The barrel is totally dominant, and totally delicious.

M: Medium-to-full-bodied with pleasant viscosity. Plenty of creamy carbonation, too. Luscious.

O: Who would have expected a hearty base beer like OEO to be so thoroughly overwhelmed by a round of barrel aging? This one was all about the sour, vinous, complex notes from the wood. Much more of a dark sour than a traditional Porter, but you won't hear me complaining about that!
