This beer is retired; no longer brewed.

Le Saisonnier is named after the seasonal workers for which the first, old-world Saisons were originally brewed. Amber in color and fermented in and aged in Chardonnay barrels with a blend of yeast and bacteria, Le Saisonnier is bright, balanced and refreshing.

On tap at the release
The beer pours a cloudy burnt orange/yellow, no sediment, and has a thin, loose, white halo of head around the perimeter. The nose is earthy and very unique, reminiscent of green tomatoes, a blend of savory herbs, and delicious funk. The taste is tart from start to finish with subtle Chardonnay oaky barrel notes which transform into bright and acidic strawberries. It's relatively light bodied with low abv, good drinkability, rustic maltiness, moderate tartness, and a dry, funky finish. I'm quite impressed by this beer, it's better than some of the previous SP saison offerings and highlights some interesting bugs.

750 mL bottle poured into a wine glass.

Appearance - Murky and hazy orange. Medium white head. Lots of lacing and a thick collar.

Smell - Stone fruits and some citrus. Some wine barrel. Lots of yeast. A bit of a mineral character.

Taste - Stone fruit and more wine flavor. Pale malt is stronger here. Yeasty and pushing a bit sweet before the finish. Mineral character is strong and it has kind of a rotten fruit flavor in the finish.

Mouthfeel - Medium body. Not as light as I was expecting. Medium carbonation.

Overall - Not as impressed as I normally am by Side Project saisons. It's got a weird aftertaste.

Cloudy pear like color lends to the overall experience as pear seems prevalent. The aroma had orchard pear and Apple with a cidery sour and peppery scent. The flavors followed with pear and Apple but the sour is more balsamic and white wine. Though sour and tart the feel is smooth and seems more like a cider. Very enjoyable beer.
