Part of the El Grande empire (HK Brewhouse, Fatt's, Slim's etc) -- I have been going here since it opened, used to be a regular. Unfortunately it has gone into a severe downward slide. Besides all the grey-marketed imports and totally fried beer, it's hot as hell in the open-air summer.
My most recent experience was two weeks ago, when I dropped in during the late afternoon to try the Fuller's Seafarer's Ale, which they have on draught. An okay beer, and was talking to a fellow at the streetside bar area for quite a while about Macau and the Pacific Northwest beer scene. Anyway, he offered to buy me the pint, and I accepted after a lot of "Are you sure?" talk. Fine, cool, thanks fella, exchanged info and all that.
Went to the bathroom, then headed for the exit. Suddenly the staff ran me down and accosted me, accused me of stealing a beer in front of the whole bar. Explained the situation, they wouldn't relent, so I pulled out my wallet and paid. Then I talked to the manager; she proceeded to insult me repeatedly, and told me a lot of people do this. Really? A lot of regulars try to dine-and-dash on a HK$40 (US$5) pint of beer? Get real. I asked her if they had asked the gentleman if he was indeed paying for the pint -- "No, the customer will tell us that, this is your problem."
Will never, EVER go back. Steer clear of this place; it's an atrocious tourist trap near the escalator and you can do a lot better in Hong Kong nowadays. This place may have been relevant 6 years ago, but not now. Head to The Globe a block away instead.
