Theophan The Recluse was a Russian monk known for the spiritual depth and complexity of his writings. We consider him a perfect namesake for this rich, complex imperial stout, brewed with eight specialty malts, dark Muscovado sugar and a Belgian yeast strain. Deep, mysterious, full-bodied and indefinably exotic, Theophan The Recluse is meant to transport drinkers to a place of deep contemplation, spiritual insight and inspired conversation.

Look: Poured coffee black with a tan head that was only about 3/8 inch tall. That was even after an aggressive pour. The head quickly vanished to a thin foam ring around the edge. Decent lace on the sides.
Smell and Taste: Bold maltiness with dates and raisins. Quite high on the sweetness scale and somewhat boozy aftertaste. Then too, what would you expect at 10% ABV.
Feel: Very smooth to drink. Perfect level of carbonation which is a surprise considering that poor head.
Overall: After contemplating over the first half a glass, I believe there will be many more Theophans in my future.

Sampling a cellar temp 12 oz can poured into my snifter. THe beer pours a jet black color with a dense creamy tan head of 2.5 cm foaming up. This foam fades to the thinnest of edge layers soon after putting the glass down on the table.
The aroma on this beer is pretty big dark malt notes. I get big dark chocolate, roasted note, molasses, some tobacco and leather notes and a bit of anice. I also get a bit of raisin note mixed in for good measure.
Not really any hop profile on the nose.
First sip reveals a medium body with fine and gentle carbonation. The texture is very smooth and silky. All in all a very drinkable big beer on physical traits.
The flavor is similar to the nose predictions. I get some brown sugar and roasted malt notes along with some bakers chocolate and raisin flavor. Finally I do get some anice again and abit of black bitter coffee note. This bite is on the finish and lingers a bit after the swallow.
Overall the beer is a nice flavor profile and is pretty easy to drink for a bigger ABV brew. Glad to have tried this one, and also glad to have a few more bottles

12 oz bottle poured into Crane snifter.
Deep black color with a nice medium thickness and a head of 1/2 finger.
Delicious aromas of deep hot fudge, dark roasted barley, molasses, raisin, dare I say bourbon booziness, and caramel. A lot like Dark Horse PT5.
Absolutely delicious. Tons of hot chocolate, roasted malts, caramel, raisin, prune, banana, coffee, and more chocolate on the finish.
Feel has a nice buzzing carbonation, is very slick, a little on the light side but not by much, and a boozy dry finish.
Overall what the hell people. This beer deserves more respect! Great stuff here. Highly enjoyable. I would buy tons of more if I were ever in GA again.

Poured from a bottle at the brewery. Overall appearance was dark and opaque, with bits of sediment floating in the beer (not uncommon with older versions of this style of beer). Aroma was quite pleasant actually; full of dark chocolate and coffee flavors. Taste was surprisingly dry, almost like a black coffee and burnt toast. Finish was pleasant, again more dry than I was expecting. All in all, this wasn't a great beer for a hot (95 degree F) summer day, but it is something I could see myself drinking again.

Pours black as night with a sliver of tan head. Zero head retention and lacing
S: Roastyness, smoke,
T: Dryness and restrained booze up front. Smokyness, roastyness, and dryness dominate as this warms. Finishes dry, woody and boozy
MF: Chewy with restrained carbonation , but builds as this warms
Solid RIS, no flaws to pick apart for sure

A - Pours black with a small tan head
S - Aroma has quite an alcohol sting to it
T - Flavor is pretty straightforward roasted malt.
M - Mouth feel is thick, carbonation low.
O - This is one of those times when I got fooled by the label and name. Really nothing special happening here. Not a bad beer but I would not seek it out again.
