L (4) - This beer pours a nice red color with a decent little head on top.

S (3.75) - Not a lot of smells here. A little hop, and if I use my imagination, smoke. But if it didn't say so and I hadn't been told, I wouldn't get the smoke note.

T (3) - Meh. A wee bit of malt, wee bit of hop (or less), and a wee bit of smoke, almost. Again, fairly unimpressive on all fronts. Nothing tastes bad, but that's about it.

F (4) - It's carbed and drinks well.

O (3.75) - Overall a fairly ho-hum beer. I know Reds are kinda like that, but there wasn't much to speak of. It looked nice, and tasted okay. I'm not mad I tried it, and would probably drink one if someone gave it to me. But not in a hurry to run out and stock my cellar with it.

Looking : 1 finger of fluffy off-white head with a copper-meets-rose colored body. While the head is diminutive, it sticks like disease to the glass as I swirl it.

Smelling : Good lord this smells good. Fire roasted malts meet a sweet, pungent oaty nectar with dried peppers and light smoke. This is honestly one of the most amazing beers I've nosed. It's just great!

Tasting : Right off the bat the rich toasted malts hit with unmistakeable smokiness. It gives way to plum and honey, retaining the smokiness throughout. This all combines with a sharp snap of fresh, yet appropriately muted hop, making for an intense yet balanced flavor. Again, I say it is intense - however balanced and great as a sipper. It ends with great Amber notes and roasted smoke.

Feeling : delightful balance of creaminess and fluidity, just bordering medium bodied. It ends dry and parched, a nice finale for the smokey profile.

Overall : I can't recommend this one enough. Just go try it, it's impressive and unique to boot.

Deep reddish amber pour with a nice caramel, ruddy-brown head that holds up with a nice bit of lace. Really nice caramels and biscuit malt with a subtle smoky presence. Lightly sweet flavors meet the tongue but well balanced with just a hint of hop bitterness cutting the sweetness yielding to rich caramel and biscuit malt with a gentle smoke. Medium body lightly creamy nice carbonation. Overall this is a really nice red ale. The smoke definitely adds to the overall package.

A well balanced red ale with clear hop flavors but no particular distinctions to make it stand out. The hints of smoke are good and not overdone. Hops flavors also blend well with the bigger malt flavors that clearly make it a red ale. And it is a red ale with a dense off-white head that laces nicely. Good mouthfeel with a fullness and some creaminess. Mixed aroma of hops and malt and hints of smoke. Probably be nice with some meat (I like smoke beers with meat).

Had this at Lake Avenue Lounge in Storm Lake off tap. My first craft beer. I'll never forget this one. Tastes smooth with a hint of smoke like you're at a campfire. Hints of carmel malt with hints of honey smell. The slight hoppiness finishes it off. A great beer that everyone in Northwest Iowa needs to try.
