Ah, the old tried and true. Before I turned twenty-one I would go here with my parents and pick out beer and wine. It certainly isn’t my favorite place in Richmond to pick up beer, but I appreciate it for its convenience and the fact that it can serve as a good starting place for aspiring beer aficionados.

The ambience is inadequate, but you aren’t expected to go there for it. The shopping center is located to the failing Books-A-Million, which is surely destined to die out within the next five years. The parking lot isn’t in the best condition and the turn into the shopping center from Broad St. is a disaster waiting to happen. The store has the feel of a warehouse, which is not unexpected of a Total Wine & More. Beyond this, many members of the staff don’t have a clue about the beer they carry. Then again, you’ll occasionally hit a wine expert that happens to know a little about beer and you may feel better.

Over the past three years, I’ve noticed that their selection of singles has dwindled a bit. They seem to have fewer Belgians than they used to, whereas their mainstream stock has widened somewhat; of course, this is probably due to the clientele that come in and purchase beer from the store. Many of the beers that they carry in six packs can be found at Kroger, but they have a decent assortment of singles. I’ve heard about problems with some of their singles, but I’ve never had a problem with one of my purchases being skunky.

If you want to support Virginia-based breweries, this is a great place to go. They seem to have a greater selection of Old Dominion, Williamsburg, St. George’s, and Mobjack products than you can find elsewhere. I was pretty pleased to find several sixers of Old Dominion Spring Ale still sitting in the cooler. You can sometimes go here and find something you haven’t had before, but if rarity is your objective, I suggest going to Carytown or Once Upon a Vine.

Not much you can say about Total Wine. They all seem almost identical to me, except for what you find on the shelves. I did think that this outlet had an exceptonial variety of Regional craft, with almost an entire aisle of singles. There was no shartage of new breweries for me try. Whiel I couldn't get everything I wasn't disappointed with the haul I got.

I agree with most of the comments from other reviewers. The store is large and has a huge selection of craft beer, large domestically produced beer (e.g. Buds, Coors, Miller, etc.), and imports. There is a whole isle of single bottles you can select to build your own six pack. At times, you can feel like a kid in a candy store--what should I get!

The major downside is that you have to be careful about freshness dates especially in the build your own six pack area.

If it is wine you want, their wine selection is really large.

I visit the store about once a week to stock up on beer and wine. I think most of the folks there recognize me. Not sure if that is good or bad.

Like Most Total Wines. More Wine than Beer. Still a very large amount of craft beer. Huge selection of single bottles is great if your looking to make a mix a 6. Limited Releases are kept behind the customer service desk so you have to ask for them, normally with a one or two bottle limit. Staff is friendly and willing to help if needed. Prices are normally very competitive a lot of times cheaper than some other shops in the area.

Typical huge wine and beer store. They do have great special releases though in good quantities. Most will be limited to 1 bottle per customer per day. They keep them behind the counter with a board posting what they have. Just ask. Their end caps tend to feature both good, highly rated limited release beers and mass produced weaker beers that have been unloaded in our local market from a brewery out of state. Prices are good but some other retail stores can be just as competitive if not more. Staff can be a huge help (the assistant manager in particular) or no help at all. If you know what you want, this is the place for you.

I'll echo what has already been said. Lots of beer in cases, sixers, and singles. Decent prices--it's a chain with buying power. Service: not as proactive as other locations, but I managed. Bigger emphasis on wine (duh) in the cramped store. I'd recommend those other local shops in Richmond any day, but I had to see what they had.

One of my two main go-to beer stores in Richmond. The prices are pretty good, and the staff are awesome. Favorite part: You can mix your own six packs with anything in the store. I should note that I'm rating the Robious Road location, and *not* the one on West Broad. Highly recommended.

This is the walmart of beer/wine shops. There is a ton of inventory, stacked aimlessly and this is only amplified by the fact that the staff knows less about what beer than you do, because you know the name. If you have an hour to waste and don't want any help finding something that may, or may not be there, this is the shop for you. Go to Corks and Kegs or Once Upon a Vine.

Remarkably large selection of craft and imported beers, although the emphasis here is on wines and commercial brews. The prices are excellent compared to my neighborhood stores in Boston, MA, but I don't know how they relate to other stores in Richmond. The place looks like a warehouse club layout, in a partly vacant strip mall; nevertheless, selection is excellent, and offerings are up-to-date (e.g., seasonal brews are available as expected). I don't know how fresh they are, though, as it may be the warmest wine/ beer store I've ever been in given that the temperature outdoors is 63F today.

I hate to admit it, but this is probably my favorite overall place to buy beer in Richmond. I enjoy shopping at other stores once in a while, but Total Wine has a great American singles collection, and most importantly for me, the prices are often quite a bit lower than some of the competitors.

The store is bursting at the seams with inventory, more so than the Midlothian location which often has lots of empty space on the shelves. You have to check dates, as there are certainly some older beers sitting around. But that's true at most places in Richmond.

They get big releases - this is where I got my Hopslam this year for instance. They also have as good as, if not better, selection of local beers as some of the non-chain shops in the city.

The service isn't great, although it's not as bad as some seem to think. Most employees aren't terribly knowledgable about beer, but a few are very helpful, and everyone I've talked to is at least friendly and does their best - no one has an attitude or anything.

This store is located at Parham and Broad, in an old strip mall. The store is ok, yes they have a pretty good selection, but there have been a few drawbacks:

1) the usual issue of freshness. Bottles can sit around a while so you need to look out for dates.

2) staff is pretty indifferent. Haven't found anyone that knowledgeable or friendly for that matter.

3) store is getting pretty tired. After 10+ years without a remodel, the appearance is old and uninviting.

I stop by looking for new releases, but I prefer Wine & Beer Westpark.

I had a feeling that this store wouldn't be all that different from the Robious location in terms of location, but I was a little bit wrong. The number of singles may have been a little less than the other store, but it wasn't by any stretch a disappointment either. They had a few beers on hand that I hadn't noticed at the other store in both small bottles and bombers.

The store is laid out drastically different from the other location, but once I got my bearings straight, I was off to the races. Bit more crowded than I had expected, but it was a Friday afternoon. Overall, the store seemed a little more cluttered than the other location, but not to the point where I felt it was a dingy or untidy location - just busting at the seams with all types of product (wine, beer, etc.)

Service was friendly and relatively quick considering the crowd at the time. No complaints at all over the service.

I can't stand traveling down Broad at most any point of the day, but I am glad that this place has a stop light conveniently located at teh exit of the strip mall that it's located in. Makes even the worst rush hour navigation a little less frustrating!

It's hard to believe I've been here for 5 years and didn't go to Total Wine until today.

Mostly what I like about this chain store is the fact that there are so many singles. I did indeed pick up a mixed six-pack of brews I''d never tried before.

I like the layout, and obviously it's more wine than beer, but they do have a lot of beer.

The selection's not insane, but they pretty much have anything you're looking for. Good Bombers. Belgians. Singles. Six Packs. Most of what you can find in Richmond is here, and there seems to be a big seasonal section, which is nice since it's summer of course.

I wouldn't make any special trips to go here, but they have a fairly impressive selection overall, and when I'm in the area I'll probably stop by again to grab another mix six.

Q: This Total Wine had a generally high quality of beer. There were many excellent brews to be had.

S: The staff, as they are in most of these giant stores, was more or less indifferent. Not unfriendly, but hardly welcoming.

S: This is a surprisingly cramped store, so that might have something to do with the selection. Lots of Virginia beers (Dominion, Starr Hill, St. George). Some good American craft beer, such as Dogfish Head, Southern Tier and Bluegrass. Not as wide a selection of Belgians, Germans or British beers as you'd expect.

V: Typically low prices for a warehouse-style business.

Overall, this is just a typical chain store. It has some good beers, but I wouldn't come there that often.

For readily-available stuff, this is a good stop as prices are reasonable. On my last trip I saw a relatively wide breadth of craft selection. Some Bell's Troegs and other regional craft products, with a fair amount of decent imports. Quality of the offerings to me were solid - maybe not a great deal of the hard-to-find stuff but more of the flagship offerings that move. Nothing wrong with that. In a place like this I really don't expect service, I mean...$#!+ dog...when you go to Best Buy do you expect the zit-faced teenager to know the ins and outs of the TV you're buying? Same deal here. This is a big box, and a decent big box. Prices are very reasonable. You can get a few things here a buck or so cheaper than other outlets in town. Good place to stop into for comparison shopping.

This place was able to show me how pathetic a state Pennsylvania is. I was able to experience buying beer outside the state and I was amazed.

Total Wine & More of course focuses on their wine selection. There was about four or five rows dedicated to just wine. At the end of one of those rows there was a five door humidor. I purchased a cigar there to compliment the beers I was buying. Your next four rows were dedicated to beer.

The first row you come to was all single bottles. I have never seen this before so I was shocked. I was able to purchase a bottle of Aventinous for $3. I also walked out of there with a few local brews from back home of beers that I haven't tried yet. Then you get in to six packs and cases. Then they have a refrigerated area with cold stuff and a walk in for kegs.

Overall I was impressed with this place. It was very clean. I didn't ask for any help because I was too overwhelmed that I just had fun looking around. The only thing that upset me was the fact that I live in Pennsylvania!

Stopped in here after calling ahead to confirm that they have Nugget Nectar, knowing that as a seasonal, it would be fresh and I was planning on buying a case, which was $41.99. My sister also picked up 2 cases of Hobback Amber which were less than $30 each, and the clerk had no problem assisting the retrieval of said cases from the to shelf. I must say, with this markets better array of craft breweries, this Total Wine location had a better selections than the ones here in Raleigh-Durham-Cary, but it was still not on par with other stores in the Richmond area. Much lower prices, however.

Stopped in a week ago as I hadn't been to this location in a while. Since I was in the area, I figured I'd stock up on some summer style beers, and anything else that might catch my fancy. Well, just one look around and that's all it took; I was combing the singles section for rare finds and seeing what sixers were on sale. I ended up creating a couple mix-a-six packs, picked up a couple solid ales, and walked out not paying too much considering the volume of beer I bought. A combination of great domestic beer and a few rarer imports, in conjunction with run-of-the-mill stuff, this Total Wine still has a solid selection. Service was pretty much absent as I was left to my own devices, but the cashier was nice. Anyway, definitely worth a stop if you're out on this side of town.

This is a great place to go on the west end of town. In the middle of things on Broad street, which is a plus. Store is predominantly wine, which I've never taken the time to look at. But it carries two and a half aisles of sixers and cases of beer, in addition to a very respectable aisle of singles. You can find pretty much any local beer, a good bit of dogfish, etc. The Belgians aren't overly numerous, but they have a good few German and British brews. They have some stuff I've had a hard time finding elsewhere, like Mendocino's stuff.

Not too much service walking around the beer section, but nearly all of the people in the front of the store are knowledgeable about beer and they're all really friendly. Most of the time they don't have Bell's or Stoudt's in singles and will break up a sixer if you ask. Good people. This isn't my favorite store ever, but it's definitely solid and great location-wise. Worth a visit, definitely.

After grabbing my cart and passing the eight aisles of wine, I arrive at the three dedicated to beer. Total Wine & More is in business to please as many as they can, and they wind up providing enough to be ok, but not enough to really make you love them. Even in their wine section they have space devoted to box wine; surely not something a wine connoisseur would be searching for.

And so it is with the beers. One row devoted to macros. Macro singles mixed in with crafts. Malternatives rubbing shoulders with Belgians. They have a cold case mainly for sixers. The kegs available, as someone pointed out, is macro-oriented. Anything remotely "special" requires advanced ordering.

Bright lighting, wide aisles. The best service I have received comes from the distributor reps. I happen to see them because I go to this place at lunch during the winter to make my purchases when the stuffy aren't picking up their cases of wine and the kids are buying their cheap cases for parties (this usually occurs between 5 and 7 pm.)

They have had the occasional tasting which is a welcome surprise.

The purchasing person tends to be reactive. They get five Sam Adams Chocolate Bocks, I buy the last two (so overpriced) and a month later they get at least three cases. Well after Christmas when I was purchasing them for gifts. Someone mentioned no IC in bottles. Now they have a whole display, with the aluminum bottle-shaped cans prominently displayed.

They get my business because of the convenience factor and they do have beers that I enjoy. Worth a look if you're local. Out-of-towners with extra time might make a stop. Local beers sold there include Mobjack, Williamsburg, and St. George's, sometimes Legends.

Service was kind of poor, I had to stand and wait for my bottles to be price checked because they forgot to label the actual beer with a price.

They carry both singles and six packs. Very good place to go pick up singles for trying new beers because of their very large variety of offered singles.

This place is more about wine than beer. The selection of wine is extensive, yet the beer selection is just average. Some prices are reasonable, but most are pretty inflated. Its hard to find cases of beer worth buying. Most beer selection is either singles, 6 pack, or 12 pack variety. Not a bad place to buy kegs. But again, domestic macro is the option. I was pleasently surprised they had iron city, cans though. I asked about bottles and got a look of horror.

In summary, good place for a quick purchase if your passing by, if not, spend the extra few minutes and go elsewhere.

Total Wine is just up the street from Wine and Beer Westpark and has a pretty darn good selection including seasonals. The beer aisle is actually three aisles with two being micros and one being BMC. I noticed almost every person purchasing wine was grabbing some beer. The selection was pretty darn good. While they did not have every single Belgian beer imagineable, they did have a vast selection of many beers.

Plain and simple the service as Total Wine was less than spectacular. You should not have to wait to ring out two $1.09 beers. I'll definitely stop by again, and hopefully will not select beers requiring a "price check."
