Holiday Ale
Have you been naughty… or spiced? N&S is a hefty winter warmer fortified with hearty seasonal spices such as cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, ginger, and orange zest. The malty strong “Wee Heavy” Scottish Ale base balances the spice and warms the belly on cold Pennsylvania evenings.
IBUs: 34.7

A thanks to the captain of the canquest, woodychandler, for this beer. Poured from a 12 oz. can on a humid summer night. Has a dark iced tea color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is of nutmeg, some ginger. Taste is cinnamon, nitmeg, some malts, light ginger and alcohol. Feels medium bodied in the mouth and overall is a solid beer.

Poured from a bomber into a Dogfish Head tulip
L: Nearly clear copper pour with 2 fingers of foamy white head. Nice retention and lacing.
S: Smells like the holidays... spicey and sweet. Caramel malts... nutmeg and cinnamon.
T/F: Bready malts... modest sweetness with strong/pungent spices. Cinnamon and clove dominate with Nutmeg and Ginger in the background. Not picking up on the orange rind much.. overspiced in my opinion to the point that it takes away from the beer. Somewhat astringent/medicinal. Medium bodied. The finish is holiday spice.
O: A bit of a rough brew... again, overspiced imho which cuts down on the drinkability. I'd rather cook with this as it would probably go great with a roast or baked into something. Not one I'd snag again.

I was disappointed during this past winter when these CANs came & went at the FGBS & I missed my ChANce to get any for The CANQuest (tm). I was in Mechanicsburg, PA this past weekend for the annual BCCA/EBCA/Rusty Bunch Spring Thaw CANvention when I learned of the opening of the "Brewed in Dauphin County" exhibit at the Dauphin County Historical Society on Sunday. I was in no great hurry to return home & since it would include both a panel discussion & a tasting, I signed up. A rep was in attendance & when I pleaded my sad case, I was given a CAN for review.
From the CAN: “Store Cold*Drink Fresh*Please Recycle”; "Have you been naughty… or spiced? Naughty & Spiced is a hefty winter warmer fortified with hearty seasonal spices such as cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, ginger, and orange zest. The malty strong 'Wee Heavy' Scottish Ale base balances the spice and warms the belly on cold Pennsylvania evenings."
I Crack!ed the vent & although it was a fresh CAN, I had no desire to be naughty at this time of night, I went with a slow, gentle Glug followed by a vigorous in-glass swirl which raised just over a finger of fizzy, foamy, light-tan head with modest retention, quickly becoming wisps and leaving moderate lacing in its wake. Color was Coppery-Brown (SRM = > 17, < 22) with NE-quality clarity. Nose was very spicy with clove and nutmeg at the forefront and nutmeg and ginger closely behind. Mouthfeel was thin-to-medium, not watery, but not terribly far past it. The taste was quite spicy, as advertised, and I now wish that I had had some of this for my annual Christmas Crock Pot roast which uses a spiced ale as part of its liquid base. The clove and cinnamon were the dominant flavors with nutmeg close behind and ginger kind of getting lost in the mix. Finish was dry, as is to be expected when spices are used as adjuncts. Phew! It almost makes me thankful for the cool temperatures that have lingered since the beginning of spring. Almost.

Had on draft at a Red Robin in Hershey, PA.
Had a look of a dark apple cider; murky brown and a thin head. No lacing left in the glass.
Smells of the spices that are in it: cinnamon, nutmeg and come clove.
Tastes like a pumpkin spiced beer with a more malty backbone than pumpkin. Super easy to drink and not overly spiced to the point that some pumpkin beers are. The orange peel that they add really evens out the spices.
Could really see myself drinking a couple of these on a cold Christmas Eve or winter's night.
Very tasty indeed.

I had this on tap at Al's Pizza and Subs in Enola, served chilled in a pint.
The color is deeply hazed medium brown with thin pale tan cap and fine bead. The smell is like potpourri -lots of ginger/nutmeg and clove with mild sweet aroma of malt. The feel is decent but spice is on the verge of dominating with thick and sweet honey-like almost syrupy texture with medium carbonation and mild alcohol influence.
The taste is good with mild honey-like aspect which makes me wonder if it is really metheglin or a spiced braggot. The spice brings a lot of earthy ginger flavor to the mix with some nutmeg and only the slightest clove to round out the intensely spiced ale. This is a bit too sweet in general to be pleasant and I would probably not order this again -but it is about average as far as winter spiced ales go and is drinkable for the style/abv, I just wish I had ordered a 1/2 pint instead.

I picked up a growler of this beer at the brewery on a recent visit to PA. This is a seasonal beer for the winter season.
Pouring at cellar temp into a large snifter, the beer pours a slightly hazy mahogany color with several stream of carbonation rising up from the bottom of the glass.
A tightly packed beige head foams up about 1 cm and fades to nothing but a string of thin wispy islands.
Aroma is very spicy up front with nutmeg and cloves and hints of cinnamon. Also a lot of sweet caramel malt and toffee. Quite an inviting and sweet nose, no hints of hops and not any hints of booze either.
First sip reveals an average body with a smooth silky texture and very soft spacious carbonation.
Flavor is sweet spicy malt with cloves and nutmeg and again rich sweet toffee and caramel, almost like a werthers candy. But the spice is dominant up front, nutmeg, cloves and cinnamon.
The spices subside and are overpowered by sweet caramel and a little booze.
The beer is fairly complex and very spicy and sweet, it borders on cloying and the booze is barely noticeable in the finish. Overall the beer is drinkable, but split a growler with a friend or it might be too sweet.
Worth a shot if spicy winter warmers are your thing.
