Poured from the bottle into a Spiegelau IPA glass.

A deep caramel brown to orange colored body, fairly clear with some good amount of slow and fine rising carbonation. Head forms a nice three fingers with a faint tan to off white color. A bit creamy in appearance with a good cap. Leaves a good thick cap with minimal lacing.

Nose smells of biscuity malts, and soft cookie dough primarily. Some mild pine senses and wood like earth and hops but very malt forward on the nose. Not much of a distinct noticeable hop profile, almost smells like an English Bitter or ESB.

Biscuit notes travel a bit on first sip. The palate fills with a nice caramel, and light pine hop action. Some decent bitterness to announce and define itself as an IPA, as the biscuit notes wash with some mild herbal and pine. A decent malt carrying body even though it comes off a bit lighter than anticipated. There is also a low amount of bitterness but still detectable, with a bit of a light clove and brown spiced like finish.

Overall drinkable but nothing mind bending. Could drink again, but there are a lot of really good IPAs out there and you have to really bring it to make your mark.

12 oz bottle into a teku.

Appearance: Pours a clear dark copper color - it's worryingly dark for an IPA. The head is a finger high, and off-white in shade. Retention is average for the style, but the thick texture leaves behind plenty of lacing on the glass. In general, it looks great, though the color is unbecoming of a good IPA. (3.5)

Smell: Wow, heavy crystal malts hit the nose immediately - this smells more like a red ale than a proper IPA. I do get a slight hint of grapefruit, and that's it. I'm not sure how fresh it is, but I have a feeling it's definitely less than 2 months old. Generally, it's not a good thing for the malts (especially crystal malt) to dominate an IPA. (2.5)

Taste: Initially, I pick up a lot of toasted bread, biscuit, and toffee. Slight hints of grapefruit, pine, and flowers finish it off. This...frankly needs to be far more hoppy - the hop flavors are good, they just need to be juiced up about 100%. Or maybe just less malty, one of the two. Having said that, it's good as far as red ales go. (3)

Mouthfeel: It starts off creamy and almost soft, yet it's dry on the finish - considering how malty it is, that's good. This could have been total crap if not for the dryness. The carbonation is assertive enough to make it drinkable without being harsh. (3.5)

Overall: As an red ale, it's good. It really is: it's layered nicely while staying interesting enough through the entire glass. As an IPA...well...let's just say it's utterly lacking. I've said it before, and I'll say it again: crystal malt flavors should never, ever, EVER be the dominant flavor of an IPA. It's reasonably well crafted (the malts don't linger disgustingly, namely), but not nearly hoppy enough. The sad thing is that I can taste a nice hop profile behind the wall of malt. Worth a try, but this could have been so much more. (3)

Dark amber with some orange tones with a big light tan head. Smell is of biscuit and caramel with some solvent alcohol notes and some slight pine hops. Not overallaly inspiring. Taste is malt forward, alcohol is very present which is odd for a smaller abv. Biscuits and caramel come through with a pine hop finish and alcohol presence. Lighter side of medium body and decent carbonation. There are tons of amazing IPAs available and you really need to bring your best. This beer just falls way short of the mark.

Pours into an imperial nonic a rich burnt orange color with a thinner but well sustained white head.A decent shot of orange and grapefruit hits in the nose.Somewhat sweet upfront on the palate sugary and caramel notes, some earthy and piney hops linger in the finish. Not a big hop bomb on the palate but a decent american IPA.
