500mL bottle poured into a tulip.
Lovely mocha-colored foam that resembles what you'd see above a cappuccino. I let it sit awhile and watch a wall of lace sheet down the glass's sides. The head is incredibly persistent and looks worthy of being ladled out. Beneath is an espresso-looking liquid, bold, dark and abyss-like. 5
Fruit wasn't my first expectation from the aroma but that's what I perceive here first---plum and dark cherry and then some brown sugar. Caramel and toffee follow, then sweet cream. Light booze is detectable but inviting. 4
Not sure where the barrel character and bourbon were on the nose but they are all over the flavor---in a good way. Dark plum and cherry carry over from the nose, but are wrapped around by oak, spicy bourbon, brown sugar and a robust vanilla flavor. More and more dark chocolate appears, joined by tobacco. I find a lovely, creamy coffee flavor on the finish that lingers excellently. If there's anything I disagree with on the taste, it's the yeast flavor which imparts a wine- or champagne-like flavor... or something Belgian. 4.25
The body's a touch lighter than medium with a nice viscosity to it. There's a colorful yeast feel that suggests a Belgian but isn't quite to that level. Booze is felt but doesn't burn or sting, rather creating a semi-dry finish that lingers for ages. 4
I enjoy this. Tons of flavors packed into it and for that it's a winner.

Reviewed from 500ml bottle into a Westy 12 goblet.
Pours to a finger of light, creamy foam that stays around for days and leaves a nice lacing upon drinking down some of the underlying, nearly pitch-black liquid. Looks phenomenal.
Nose is really interesting, predominantly boozy but with a lot under the surface. Dates and dark stone fruit mix with the bourbon notes to give a mistaken impression that this could have been aged in a brandy barrel instead. I get a bit of oak, but the vanilla and spice notes so prominent in a lot of BBA stouts are quite subdued here.
On the mouth, dry, roasted malts come to the fore, along with cocoa powder or unsweetened baker's chocolate. Raw turbinado sugar also pops up, but the taste is not terribly sweet or cloying; it's quite sharply balanced. And the mouthfeel is fantastic: thick without being syrupy, it's great to swish around lightly a few times. The only negative here is that it's a tad hot, not hiding its 10.5% abv as well as many bigger stouts hide 12-15%. Should be an interesting one to age for a while.

From a 500 ml bottle to a snifter.
A-The beer is black and opaque. The head is one and one-half fingers tall. It fades slowly to a film and then to a collar. The foam is medium brown in color. A few legs are visible on the glass as the head fades, but no lacing. No visible carbonation.
S-The aroma is on the sweet side of things and less bitter/roasty than many big BA stouts. I smell some dried fruit, caramel, vanilla, mocha, milk chocolate, cream, a bit of black licorice, and little whiff of oak and booze. I'm interested....
T-The taste is wonderful. It packs similar flavors with more complexity and balance. I still get sweet dried fruit, caramel, cream, milky chocolate, vanilla, anise, warming booze, but there is some drying oak that creeps in as the beer warms that really mellows the finish.
M-The body medium to above average with a really creamy/fine carbonation that fits well for the style.
O-Wow, what a pleasant surprise. This beer manages to keep the barrel and stout flavors working really well with each other. I like my stouts on the sweeter side and this one fits that bill, but there is enough oak and roasted flavors to keep it from veering into soy territory. I also really like the feel. Bravo, Diebolt, I didn't know you had it in ya.
