Thanks to Wasatch for this one. Poured into a snifter. Nice hazy yellow color with a medium sized white head. Good retention. Bright pine and citrus aroma. The taste was a great mix of fruit and resiny dankness. Mainly grapefuit but balanced nicely. Good feel. Great beer.

12 oz. Can
Canned On: 10/26/17
ABV: 8.5%
Poured into a Tree House glass a nice hazy pale yellow color, nice carbonation, with a nice kinda quick/creamy one-finger off-white head, which leaves an medium size oil slick, and some sticky lacing. The nose is hoppy, malty, with a nice little citrus complex (orange, tangerine, grapefruit, pineapple). The taste is hoppy, malty, with a nice little citrus complex (orange, tangerine, grapefruit, pineapple). Medium body, ABV hidden fairly well, big bitter finish. Overall, a tasty brew, quite a different take.

Poured out a slightly hazy, golden orange color with a small, thin head of foam. It smelled of phenolic with strong citrus notes. Sweet citrusy flavor with grapefruit and pineapple notes.

Brief impressions from a can acquired as part of a 4-pack.
Imperial IPA brewed with Simcoe, Comet, Centennial, Amarillo (my favourite hop), and Citra. Fermentables: 2-row, wheat, dextrose. 100 IBU. O.G. 1.068. 8.50% ABV.
A: Healthy white cap over a slightly hazy pale yellow-copper body of average vibrance. ~8 minute retention.
Looks decent for an imperial IPA. Not unique or special. Colour isn't pronounced or robust. Head is pretty average.
Sm: Oniony Simcoe leads the pack, with Citra and Amarillo trailing far behind. Bright and floral, with that rare hop character I've heard described as "catty." Not pungent or oily at all, and there are only hints of the citrus and resin I'd expect from Citra and Amarillo. At least the Centennial floral hop character comes through. 2-row pale malt keeps it balanced; I don't get the wheat at all.
Aromatic intensity is quite light. Suggests an okay imperial IPA which lacks hop pungency.
TASTE & TEXTURE: Catty and floral, with some Simcoe oniony/garlicky flavour that is off-putting here even though that aspect of Simcoe usually works for me. No real citrusy or resinous flavours, to its detriment. There's just no real commitment to its hops at all; there's no hop pungency or vivid hop flavour. Thin 2-row pale malt is present, offering a weak counter to the weak hops.
Shallow and simple in build, lacking any intricacy or subtlety of build whatsoever.
Smooth, oddly off-puttingly dry, unrefreshing, light-bodied, overcarbonated. A more juicy oily brew with more body would be preferable. Thin and weak, with a stale feel on the palate. Overall presence on the palate is subpar.
OVERALL: A brew lacking harmony of texture and taste as well as basic commitment to its hops. ABV is nicely hidden I guess, but ultimately this is a shrug of a brew trying to compete in a market oversaturated with vastly superior options - whether local or imported. I can't say I'd buy this again, and it's worth noting it costs more than vastly superior offerings in the same style from the likes of Lagunitas, Deschutes, et al. I'd beware Colorado reviewers giving this emperor's new clothes ratings; it's pretty mediocre all things considered.
I'm wary about all this rhetoric about "Northeast Style (I)IPAs;" many drinkers seem convinced mere haziness in the body of a beer warrants the application of that term. The hop selection here - Simcoe, Comet, Centennial, Amarillo, and Citra - is perfectly in line with the kind of IPA Sierra Nevada might have brewed in 2005, not the tropically bent "hipster hop" beers seen in contemporary expressions of the IPA style from breweries like The Alchemist, Treehouse, Other Half, et al. (not that I buy into the Northeast Style (I)IPA nonsense in the first place). It seems the "Northeast style IPA" designation has jumped the shark and has become a marketing trend instead of a useful style distinction.

From a 12 oz can to a tulip glass. No date on the can.
A-The beer is not very attractive, but I suspect I am one of the few that place any value on how an IPA (or IIPA) looks these days. The head is yellowish white and roughly one and one-half fingers tall to start. Foam is dense and sticky, and retention is good. The beer is murky, but not opaque, and an unpleasant yellow-straw color.
S-The aroma is a nice, fruity sweet mixture in the NE style. I sniff pineapple, mandarin orange, guava, mango, a mild floral note and some honey sweetness. Bitterness is very low.
T-The taste follows the smell pretty closely. It is juicy and sweet with low levels of bitterness. I am not picking up much alcohol, either. A hint of astringency and aspirin sneaks in on the finish, but otherwise this is nice blend of juicy tropical fruit and light honey notes.
M-The body and carbonation are almost creamy with medium heft and softer bubbles. A touch sticky, but not overly so.
O-I am not entirely sold on the NE style IPA, but this is one of the better attempts that I have tried. Nice tropical fruit with almost none of the aspirin or astringent, pithy bitterness that NE style IPAs often give off. I would like to try this again.
