Bottled and brewed at Cool as Duggan's #5 Sorachi Lager.

And bottled in a puny 275 ml format at that. Duggan may have extended the concept of microbrewing too far into the production cycle of his beers. I'm just saying. Anyway.

Pours a clear pale straw colour topped by a big, bubbly head that slowly dies down and retains decently. Spots of lace remain.

Aroma reminiscent of a macro lager. Pale malts and grassy, lemony hops.

The taste is similar to a really good macro lager (I mean this as a compliment). Grainy and cerealy, with a lemony zing. Finishes dry with just a touch of lingering spice.

Mouthfeel is light and crisp.

I had this on tap at the now defunct brewpub and remember it being much better. That said, it certainly by far the best lager in this style I have had. Pretty satisfying for a 4%er.

275mL bottle from a six-pack at the LCBO. Surprised to see a) a beer from Duggans outside of Toronto and b) something that isn't the number nine IPA. A handsome bottle, despite its size, sporting a stylized Japanese number 5 (kanji) in a Duggan's "D."

Poured into a stange. Looks a great deal like a well-made pale lager or even a kristalweizen: pale light golden, very slight murk, fluffy head descending into a fine ring, and lots of visible carbonation bubbles.

Nose is soft grains, a bit of citrus and peach or some other fleshy fruit. Like a pale lager, but without any strange adjuncty smell or the like.

Nice and refreshing, light and with decent flavor, Duggan's #5 is a light beer /rice lager I can get behind. Though it is most certainly quite thin, the malt and fermented rice provide their own flavors: lemon zest, peach, lychee. Fresh, assertive carbonation, thin bodied. Granted, there still is a "light-beer" taste in the perjorative sense here, but it is one of the most palatable I've come across of the style. No offensive aftertaste either.

Decent brew, well worth a try!

Bottle: Poured a light yellow color lager with a nice large foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of light citrusy and floral grassy notes from the hops with light clean cereal notes. Taste is a mix between some grassy floral hops with good notes of refreshing clean cereal notes with some light sweet notes. Body is about average with good carbonation. Well brewed though a bigger hops punch could have provided further enjoyment of this one.

A - Light pale straw yellow. Small amount of white head that receded to a ring around the glass.

S - Very weak nose. Some grainy aromas and a very light citrus that I likely wouldn't have detected without expecting it.

T - Slight bitterness up front with a grainy malt presence and a touch of lemon in the finish.

M - Light body with moderate carbonation.

275ml Bottle

Appearance – Clear yellow colour with a small size fizzy white coloured head. There is an average amount of carbonation showing and there is a fairly good amount of lacing. The head lasted for only a minute or two.

Smell - Corn, malts, hops, grass

Taste & Mouth - The beer has an average amount of carbonation and I can taste grains, malts and light hops. There is also some corn mixed with some floral notes. It finishes with a floral corn/malt aftertaste.

Overall – Pretty decent for a light beer.. There is enough flavour going on to keep it interesting. For the price and size of the bottles however, there are better options.

Pours a pale golden yellow with a thin, soapy head that lasts for a couple of minutes, leaving a small collar. There is a good amount of visible carbonation.

Fresh grains, cooked rice and a sweet floral tone can be found in the aroma, along with a slight diacetyl note.

Really tastes of sweetened grains with a bit of a salty character. There's a decent bitterness on the tongue, but the finish also has a mild buttery flavour to it.

Light-bodied with a fair amount of carbonation. Very crisp and refreshing. The aftertaste has a lemony tartness and a sort of fattiness to it.

A nice light beer with a decent flavour and a great refreshment factor. Worked well with soup and bread. May pick this up from time to time.

Gladly found one in the singles basket at the LCBO or I probably wouldn't have ever bought this.

Tiny bottle into pint glass.

A- Super light, crystal clear straw yellow pour with zero head. Vey lively carbonation with no lacing to be found.

S- Sweet corn, grass with a touch of earthy hops. Fairly bland smelling.

T- Corn, grassy, slight wood in the finish. Earthy hops. Slightly watery. Lingering dry finish.

M- Super thin, light carbonation.

O- Very little going on, probably would have beer better colder than how I poured it (warm/cool)

A new addition to my LCBO. Baby bottle.

A - Pours macro lager apple juice in colour. Bright. Half finger of white head gone fast. Mild carbonation. No lace and just a ring of retention.

S - A little spicy hop and apple or pear with some sweet grain.

T - An unappealing sweet grain note dominates with a little of that apple note. A slight lemon and spicy hop component is there as well.

M - Medium carbonation and a light body, but not thin. Sweet finish.

O/D - Disapointing but not irritating. The Sorachi note definately doesn't dominate in any way. Branding is misleading. Not an overly tasty beer. Complex for its ABV, yet not in a great way. Forgetful.

Hmm...I didn't expect to review this right after Sapporo, but after all that mexican food, I thought something lighter might be in order.

Appearance: Awfully pale crystal clear gold body, but given it's a rice Lager I'm willing to let it slide. Ample carbonation in the body and a half finger of head that just won't quit. Producing some decent lacing as well, thumbs up here.

Smell: I got nothing, maybe some lighter hops and rice but that's it. Warming doesn't help it out either, so this category is pretty much a bust. Nothing bad though.

Taste: Well, there's definitely rice in there. The starting malt is very mild and kinda dull as the rice doesn't really add a lot of flavour. Pretty much then it's just a quite drag out until a bit of a unique hop hit makes itself known. I know at 4.0% it probably should be gauged more like a light lager, but even by those standards, it's just lacking. There's nothing bad about the taste, it's just that there's just not enough there.

Mouthfeel: The carbonation does wonders for this beer and keeps it afloat. If it wasn't there this would be a very lame beer. Transitioning is good and a light rice aftertaste while boring, doesn't hurt it's case. Also very smooth due to the rice.

Drinkability: The rice and the lighter aspects of the beer make this incredibly easy to put down. However the carbonation leaves a bit of gas for you to deal with. Refreshing during the summer I bet, although not sure for the price I'd switch to it over some other lights.

Final Thoughts: Pretty much this beer tastes like a bowl of plain white rice. On it's own, it's boring and can't stand on by itself. That being said, plain white rice paired with say curry or stir fry makes a great combo and that sums up this beer. This beer needs either a meal to go with it or an unquenchable thirst.

a nice clear, very light yellow/golden colour. good amount of foamy white head which leaves a nice film soon after pouring.

smell is grainy, has some malt and maybe slight citrus in there too.

taste is also grainy, crisp, malty. well carbonated, good drinkability - overall wasn't outstanding but nice to try.
