Appearance: Dark amber brown almost black forms with a nice thicket of tan creamy textured head, lacing forms in specks decent. Aroma: Toasted malts nice coffee edge with mild milky chocolate tones good soft overall characteristic. Taste: Sharp sweet tone in the mix of dark roasted malts, a bit of an acidic quality isn't cloying just interesting finishes smooth with mild chocolate and coffee. Mouthfeel: A bit thin not as full as I was expecting, steady carbonation and smooth creaminess, not bad. Drinkability: Solid session oatmeal stout that should be had by all visiting the Merchant Alehouse.

On-tap at the brewpub. Pours black with virtually nadda head. Slight aroma of roast. Taste is initially watery and thin roasted coffee. I builds up and is drinkable, so I can see why it is so popular. Introduction for bud/molson drinkers to a stout. A weak stout really, but passable.

The second of my beers at the Merchant Ale House. The beer arrives with a dark brown hue and only hints of light passing through allowing for crimson highlights. There is a thin edge layer of tightly packed beige head. Aroma is all malt with roasted notes and chocolate as well. I get faint whiffs of coffee bean also. First sip reveals an average body with thinner texture than I expected. Very fine carbonation. Flavor is as nose advertises, very roasty with some oats and chocolate. hints of brown sugar come out as well. There is a stonrg lingering roast and coffee mix on the finish. An easy drinker with no hint of ABV. A nice beer that could use just a hint more thickness.

Had this on tap at the Merchant Ale House in St. Catharines. Pours a pitch black colour with thin tan head and some mild lacing down the glass. Coffee and roasted malt in the smell. Flavour has some nice roasty biterness. Really big carbonation, mouthfeel a bit too thin for a stout. Still delicious though.

Served way too cold in a pint glass.

Black with tan head. head retention was ok. No lace.
Smells like coffee, and dark roasted malts. No hops in the aroma.
Tasted great, flavors of esspresso, ash, roasted malt.
Nice thick mouthfeel. Carbonation is medium to high.
Fairly high drinkability.
It's a pretty damn good stout, one of the best examples in the province even. I heard that they cask condition it sometimes, so I'd like to compare it to the cask version sometime.

Only available on tap at the Merchant.
It has a nice chocolaty/ coffee like nose. The colour is dark brown to black. The mouthfeel is medium bodied, and velvety. As for the flavour, espresso is the dominant one, along with some nice roasty chocolate flavours. It left some lace behind, and the head retention was acceptable. In the past it has been served a bit too cold in my opinion. Overall I like it, and I will drink it again.

Very dark beer with a moderate brown head, some lace. Looks appetizing.

Lots of roasted grain flavour, strong coffee notes. A little thin-bodied, almost brittle, but still drinkable. A decent example of an oatmeal stout, but didn't blow me away. Nifty name though - worth a try.
