Power House is a rich porter with a mildly roasted chocolate quality throughout. Caramel and coffee notes help balance the medium-low hop profile and provide a silky-smooth mouthfeel.

Had this last summer at BeerNV. Had been awhile since I had a beer from our border to the north. And I liked visiting this place a few times over the years, why not?

Pours dark brown. Good creamy beige head 2/5". Nice retention/lace. This is an entirely sexy beer. Swimsuit issue and all. Aroma entirely within the style guidelines, roasted malt, chocolate malt, mild C hop bitterness.

Taste imparts a very light licorice note alongside the roasted malt and burnt chocolate feels. Normally I hate licorice flavor in beer or anything, but here it is actually well done. The body is much lighter than its dark ass appearance. Smooth yet hopped enough to keep it in the nice bitterness wheelhouse. Light caramel note, unsweetened. Its a solid porter, might disappoint someone who wants a Chicago pour robust sludge double digit abv porter.

If there was a bar exam for brewing, this would be one of those universal styles you have to know how to make even if you're just looking to specialize in making candy beer or whatever the rage is these days.

Slightly earthy, bitter, and malty, this beer lacks a lot of the flavor that we expect in a porter and more resembles a brown. At the end of the day, it's noticeably hollow, which prevents it from getting a higher rating.

a fundamentally excellent porter here, no frills, but super well executed and a beer i really am enjoying this time of year as the cold weather and shorter days set in. its deep dark brown with an inch of tan head on top, frothy and thick, lasting and creamy. aroma and flavor are driven by the roasted barley in here, but its not bitter, as there is good balance from the crystal malt in the middle of this. a european note to the malt, but not to the yeast, the fermentation profile here is almost totally absent from the flavor. notes of dark chocolate and coffee grounds in here, but nothing to heavy, out in front, or aggressive, its mellow and balanced and drinkable, no real charred element left after each sip like many porters, and smooth in feel all the way. it warms up well too, and a little milk chocolate comes out then. nice carbonation for the style too, an often overlooked element in these. its old school, but sometimes less is more with a porter, and thats the case here. one of the sockeye classics, and one of the better local porters around as far as i have gathered. ill drink my share this fall and winter for sure.

A nice clean dark brown beer with toasted nut and crimson highlights. Creamy khaki head with good lacing.

Smooth chocolate aroma with toasted bread and nuttiness.

Again very chocolatey flavor with toasted bread and nutty notes.

This is where Power House shines. Excellent smooth and creamy feel that compliments the chocolate flavor perfectly. A little on the sweet side, but good roastiness to balance it out.

A pretty damn good Porter I must say. Closer to the dessert spectrum and clearly not a quencher, but good all around. Cheers.

I enjoy a good porter they are not chewy or thick. These beers are easy sipping. A hard pour produced a one finger head with dismal results. The head came and went like a virgin. A light tan creamy head. The color of the beer is dark brown with ruby highlights. The clarity of the beer is not discernable. The appearance is a poor showing.

The aromas in the beer are coffee, dark roasted malt, chocolate, wood, earthy, toffee, and bready.

The flavors in the beer are dark roasted malt, chocolate, earth, toffee, medium roasted coffee, and bready.

The mouthfeel is roasted and toasty. The body of the beer is medium-light, the carbonation is medium, and a medium finish.

The beer is just an average porter. There is nothing in this beer that stands out to me as excellent. The balance of the beer is there, but not in harmony.

Pours dark brown with garnet highlights; tan head. Aroma of rich malt, cocoa, and a note of fruitiness. Flavor is earthy, more cocoa, some coffee, toasted malt. Just a smidge of smoke as it warms up. The body is medium-full; coats the tongue completely before it falls off and leaves an earthy, grainy finish. Not at all bitter. Finishes off-dry, with lasting chocolate flavor. Good substance and not overly complex.

Was given this by our neighbors who visited Boise back on 4-15-17. Canned on 2-13-17.

Beer poured brown with some reddish hue. Decent hang time on the tan head.

Nose has hints of light roast and cocoa.

Taste is cocoa forward over a light roasted malt backbone. Hopping is adequate to keep the sweetness at an even keel.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied and pretty smooth.

Overall this is a solid American Porter that has some good flavor and is easy to drink. Would have again.

Type: 12-oz. can
Glass: Clear 14.75-oz. porter/stout tulip
From: Whole Foods in Boise, Idaho
Price: $9.99 for a variety 6-pack
Purchased: April 21, 2017
Consumed: April 25, 2017
Reviewed as: American Porter
Misc.: Canned on Feb. 13, 2017

Picked this up with five others at Whole Foods on a recent work rip to Boise and later grabbing five more at Bier:Thirty. Had reviewed two others from Sockeye back in 2013 and enjoyed them both, giving the original Dagger Falls a 4.04 and a special cranberry kolsch at 4.13. Also liked the Mango Dagger Falls (3.81) and Winterfest (3.88), which I also picked up on the trip.

Poured a dark brown color with 1-to-2 fingers of khaki frothy head that thinned out quickly. A few bubbles coming up from the bottom of the glass. Good sporadic lacing. Very good retention. (Sight - 3.75)

Smelled big roasty malts in espresso, dark chocolate, anise, semi-char wood, toast, roasted barley, dark cocoa powder and toasted toffee. (Smell - 3.75)

Tasted a bit better than the nose, almost like a dark milk stout. Liked it. Got dark milk chocolate, espresso, cocoa nibs, chocolate syrup, roasty malts, toast, woody anise, hints of char wood and sweetly toasted toffee. (Taste - 4.25)

Medium body. Creamy texture. Average carbonation. Long, roasty finish. (Feel - 4.00)

Really liked this one. Would like to have some more. (Overall - 4.00)

Canned March 22nd 2016.

It pours a very dark brown with reddish hues, good head of off white foam, plenty of lacing.

I get cocoa nibs, coffee in the smell. Very little bitterness and it is not strong in the malt department either other than some roast.

Cocoa nibs bring some sweet notes, roasted malt well represented, getting some dark fruits that don't quite impart some tartness or do they? I would say yes but it seems, only when I swish the beer in my mouth.

Light bodied with light carbonation. This could use a boost.

Overall, I enjoyed this, my second can. The other 4 will be easy to drink.

One of Sockeye's flagship beers, on tap at Cole Rd. brewpub. Smooth, but has a nice roast grain bite. Abundant beige head and lacing. Slick mouthfeel. Pretty good.
