draft at the brewery
Served in a standard twelve ounce snifter, Heartsong is a deep pecan-amber in color, opaque haze, poured with a thin head that retains a narrow ring. A crisp base malt underlies toasted and brown sugar malts, with a prominent rosemary-esque phenol that hits me with notes of iodine. Fairly flat at first, but opening and sweetening a bit as it warms. Muddled steeped herbs. Toasted malts and autumn leafiness. The finish brings a light, crisp bitterness with touches of metal and a little woodiness. Moderate in body with a pleasant, smooth low-medium carbonation. This doesn’t sit with me as a great example of the style, and the strength of the iodine/phenol distracts - would like softer, more traditional yeasty spice notes and a little more fruity malt depth.
